2019 is shaping up to be one of the worst years for animated movies huh?

End of a decade of what might have been one of the worst decades is bound to end pretty bad.

Oh boy can't wait for TS:4 or Frozen 2 to win best animated movie. It's a meaningless title but I'd really appreciate some non-Disney company to win like what spiderman did last year

Sequels should never be nominated for oscars, imo.

There's a Playmobil movie?

What movie could possibly take that title with such a lackluster selection of candidates to choose from

One of these things is not like the other

foreign animated movies

None. Japanese animated films also look like shit this year, with Children of the Sea being one possible exception. But it won't get any marketing push, so Frozen 2/TS4 is guaranteed to win.

Nah, Shinkai is going to sweep the floor with Disneyshit.

>Shinkaishit
Get out. That hack just recycles the same movie every single time.

Has Shinkai ever done something that isn't heavily based in romance?

If we show it to Guillermo Del Toro and he likes it, he will convince the Academy to give it the Oscar. It worked with Spider-Verse.

Why do so many 3g movies these days look like they all were made by the same studio?

The academy just invited several anime creators that will likely influence the next BAF winner.

Is this thing decently animated, or is it another Japanese feature with stunning painted backdrops and Hannah Barbera-tier animation?

Don't know.

Eh, not bad, certainly pretty colors (and of course fabulous backgrounds), but the overall animation is way, way less impressive than ancient shit like Akira. The character animation is decent but Disney and Bluth's 2D work craps all over it.
Maybe my Weeb levels just aren't high enough.

The Academy is sick and tired of Mickey. Plus, giving the Oscar to a movie with a “4” in its title is just going to make them lose even more credibility.

>Oscars
>credibility
I agree that they'd likely want to give it to something that wasn't a sequel to other Oscar winning Animation, but someone else (indcluding Japan) is gonna have to try harder than they have been this year to take it from Disney.

>only two good movies

Nah that's pretty much true, animation in Japan hasn't hit the old-school-days tier yet, but tbf the same could be said about the west

God I wish Akira wasn't one of the only anime to fully utilize classic animation principles and real lip-sync. The movement is so full of life and it makes me wish more anime movies would focus on character-animation over details and shading.

2 hours of this took them like 7 years to animate, and I assume they were working on it Japanese-slave-galley hard.

Pretty much. We know that the new Oscar voters want to give the award to something else than Disney Sequel #785412, but the competition is outright bad this year.

The people who vote Oscars do not have Yea Forums's irrational attitude towards Disney.
I'd expect most of them are pretty ambivalent one way or the other.

Shitty juvenile romance at that.

This doomed the anime movies tho. too expensive to produce today.

Hopefully if the Academy gives a shit to even watch it

After lumping Song of the Sea as chinese crap i can't trust on them anymore, that also applies to anyone that has 5+ IQ

Minions has more artistic integrity then these films
They are just Twilight repeated infinitely with different "characters"

Even if it wasn't expensive it seems like only westaboos like taking advantage of character animation.

>not the ovas
the textbook definition of souless

That's not 2017, when we got Emoji movie

the emoji movie was pretty well animated. too bad everything else about it belong in a dumpster fire.

Even mainstream news are impressed with the movie.

TV animation aside, that's rarely what japanese animated movies are. Freelance key animators flock to films due to better pay and no commitments.

I hear there's a studio out there called Ghibli. I think they might be going places.
