That CD they released with all their back issues that even let you print them out was one of the coolest things I've seen a publisher do.

I remember a period of time when one of the writers who worked on it always used the actual logos of products/brands whenever they were mention, it was a weird detail that always stood out to me.

The phony "Equal space for the opposing side" gag in the table of contents for one issue was stupid (I guessed what they were going to do without even turning to the page and I was proven right) and the gag about repackaging movies to appeal to the alt-right just made the writer look like a stupid zoomer, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been. There was still some good apolitical humor and I really enjoyed the Halloween issue. I'm an NRA supporter and I liked the Ghastlygun Tinies thing because at least it looked like an actual Edward Gorey drawing, which hack Tumblr artists saying the same thing could NEVER replicate.

Same reason why Tom Lehrer lost heart doing political satire. Once Kissinger got a Nobel Peace Prize, reality had officially become sillier than any satire or parody could accomplish. I remember when I joked that Sarah Palin becoming POTUS would have struck the death knell of American democracy, then reality topped me by making a someone who'd been a walking punchline for several decades (honestly, how is it that so many kids nowadays think Trump jokes are limited to just the last few years) president.

It doesn't help that the magazine is a shell of itself. The inclusion of advertisements signaled that the magazine had become compromised, a form of controlled opposition to the Establishment. The movie and TV parodies weren't quite up to snuff. The humor had become a victim of its own success and failed to stand out in a culture emphasizing absurdity and snark. The new stuff that I saw after the move to California (really?) was either tired Trump jokes (look, I don't like the guy, but everyone and their mother has done it, so unless you can stand out, don't bother), unfunny (the Halloween costumes gags in one issue came off like something out of the mind of an out of touch bore), or just a failed attempt at capturing the magic of the old school Mad comics.

Still, it will be missed. There were a lot of good times over the years, and I will always remember the best (or is it the worst) of the Usual Gang of Idiots. As far as icons go, Alfred E. Newman and his motto rightfully belong to American history.

This is an overdue but still wistful good-bye, one best expressed by sending MAD off with a loving Bronx salute.

The problem with most Trump jokes is their ubiquity. When material is more niche, it allows the good stuff to stand out. But Trump is so overexposed that it's like watching several episodes of a comedy series back to back to back. Yeah, you start off laughing, but eventually you just get tired of how samey it all feels and everything begins to blend together. A joke works best the first time, when it's fresh and often offers some sort of insight. When everything is regurgitated and analyzed to absurdity, the material doesn't work. I just wish the media realized that and followed the advice given by the Simpsons.

My last “regular” mocked Mars Attacks. I read the whole thing cover to cover and didn’t smile once. Bill Gaines WAS Mad and when he died, he took the spirit of the magazine with him. The last years were a bit fusty but you could see the drop in quality within issues of his death. That’s when I gave Mad up as regular reading.

I’ve checked in every so often and it’s only gotten worse, every time. I never cared for Dave Berg’s Lighter Side, but Mad seemed heartless and cruel reissuing it as the Darker Side. The marquee movie and TV parodies dribbled away. Monroe sucks. They added ads. They moved from New York.

I’m mourning the end of Mad while pondering how the hell it lasted this long. It’s been on borrowed time since the 90s, maybe earlier. The greatness was long gone, never to return. But what greatness.
