Oh for sure, but like many things a bad trend is not really the fault of the author or inherently bad. People following the style despite not being able to write the kind of compelling epic story lines that benefit from that style are to blame.

Writers who drag out stories long past the point they've worn out their novelty is just them aping a style poorly (or editorial request to make it TPB length, of course)

Evil or no, there is something to be said for characters realizing when shit has officially gotten too real, and wisely deciding to bail. Know when to fold 'em, as it were.

Desperate attempts to be "cinematic" is a problem with pretty much every medium. Culturally, we hold films on an absurdly high pedestal. And so, to try and gain the same level of prestige, video games, books, and comics try to restructure themselves to be more like movies, which inevitably fails due to that being physically impossible.

No wonder they fired half their staff a few months ago.

Side effect of the writers and fans being aware that she's premium waifu material. A fair number of the other characters, villains included, also want a piece of her.

This is just the first time a villain who pined for her was a legitimate threat to her, so it's really creepy and off-putting. In all fairness though, this was handled with a fair bit more class than such stories usually are, so there's that.

I know WHY every villain wants to rape Caitlyn, but why do none of them have self control?
