Change the color of Kovu's fur, so that the bitch's statement of Kovu being a found orphan makes sense and no one would keep suspecting it's Scar's son/Kiara's cousin. He could've had a tawny tan color.

Haven't seen it in a long time and don't think there's much wrong with the basic premise, so:
Zira needs some sort of flashback/backstory scene, explaining briefly how she happened to be connected with Scar (like besides "they may have fucked," like literally showing him naming Kovu as his heir) and what Simba's later reaction was to finding out about her and her cubs' existence after Scar's death etc. Since there's a timeskip from defeating Scar to Simba presenting his cub at the end of Lion King, there really is plenty of room to account for Zira's whereabouts in a way that doesn't just come off like an obvious retcon. Ex. she was giving birth to Kovu then.
Go all the way with Kovu being Scar's son, or don't BUT tie the adoption or whatever the hell in with the above stuff. Like if Zira either found/took Kovu from somewhere OR none of her kids are actually Scar's, then just make that explicit so that "Scar wasn't really my father" doesn't feel like the last-minute incest cover-up that it obviously is.
Some people think it's weird that Simba kicked a whole group of lionesses from the kingdom/that Scar + Zira had THAT many on her side. So she got them from somewhere else. Like Simba just banishes Zira and her cubs to the Outlands. When it's time for the big revenge on Simba, Zira manages to convince some smaller neighboring pride to overthrow Simba and take the Pridelands for themselves. It's not like any Outsider lioness besides Zira and her kids had any lines or characterization anyway.
Keep the original Zira suicide scene. They were seriously like THIS close to doing it anyway youtube.com
And yeah I guess ideally higher quality animation if it's not direct-to-video in this scenario, maybe change some dumber lines/moments if necessary. I don't have a specific list because again, haven't seen it recently, but maybe try to develop some characters or themes better where possible, Iunno
