SU hasn't been good since Season 2, this is a fucking fact.
Season 1 was the peak and it blew its load SUPER early, especially with Steven never asking questions, endless townie episodes that did nothing but add cast bloat, or dumb fucking anime references.
SU was doomed to fail the moment it blew its entire load at the season 1 finale, and never expanded on it.

I don't know why they didn't just make the damn show a slice of life show, since that is obviously what the people making it want to create. Everything about the whole space and aliens part is always an afterthought or rushed so they can get right back to the having fun around town stuff again.
Every boarder wants to make a fun sleepy beach town slice of life show about some nice boy that live with his moms.
Meanwhile fans want the first season monster hunting magical heroes from space show.

Not so sure anyone could sell Lesbian Weekenders to Cartoon Network. Especially 2012 era CN that was still high on Adventure Time and Regular show having magical adventures every episode. But the channel typically never has slice of life stuff, that's more Nickelodeon and Disney's area.
The real problem is that there is a huge distance between the space episodes and the townie episodes. The gem empire stuff is all mystery box and leads the viewer wanting more and wants to finally learn the mystery. But when it goes to townie episode it only makes the viewer want the gem stuff even more. Then when CN has 5 month hiatuses between the episodes it makes it even worse. You wait 6 months for an episode and a townie one comes on it only seems like another obstacle in the way of getting to the mystery. It makes the viewer hate townie episodes more than normal because it's getting in the way of the real meat of the show that they want to see.
