This. Zarkon was the best part of the series and was an actually formidable and intimidating villain, and Haggar functioned best as his advisor not her own villain.
Lotor was a shitty bitch who couldn't live up to his dad despite getting an edgelord Voltron knockoff, and Haggar was somehow even SHITTIER.
They kept Shiro alive/forced him back on the team.

At some convention, there was a Voltron voice actor panel. They confirmed that Shiro is homosexual. This made people excited, but some people wanted proof. So Shiro was given a husband, Adam. However, since Adam only existed for brownie points and as a tragic backstory element for Shiro, he died. Some shippers were angry that Shiro was going out with a new character instead Keith, but some had grown used to him, so his death touched the hearts of many.
To damage control this, they gave Shiro a new husband. However this guy was a complete nobody, in fact he had completely different design in the leaks. We have no idea how Shiro met this guy, we just see them kiss once at the end of series. This isn't very interesting way to tell a story so it made people angry.
What went wrong? The staff of this show were too close with the fans. The problems that some with social media presence. The other thing that went wrong is that they thought shipper actually give a shit about representation. They should have never say anything about Shiro's sexuality. If they never talked about it, they could have left the ending open and let the fans decide who married who.
Imagine being a little boy and watching this show, not being aware of the drama that went behind the scenes. Suddenly you see Shiro kissing some dude you have no idea who that is, and you just wonder what the hell happened.
Too many shows do this. Just "Suprise, suddenly MC is gay!! The End".

Sell them merch and autographs, thank them for their dedication, but do not EVER directly engage them on Twitter, Tumblr or anywhere else. Doing that gives the impression that fans and creators are on the same level, and it's a mistake to even imply that much.
