Even though Rebecca said they’re gender less, in the show it’s self they really aren’t. They use female pronouns and identify as women . Steven’s fusions are the only ones who are gender less.

My problem with their episode was that it really made an effort to show that both have almost nothing in common, and then ended with pretty much "we have nothing in common, other than being gay for each other... let's stay together!".

And it was mostly because of fear from backlash it could have caused to break them up. But ending the episode with the 2 deciding to remain friends based on their lack of chemistry would have just show their relationship is just as normal as any straight one... that would have taken real balls.
Heck, it could have even ended with Luna being asked out by another girl after seeing her doing her best in the competition.

I remember how in Hey Arnold!'s First Season Arnold was obsessed with Ruth, but then we got the episode where he realises what kind of person she really was and gets over her crush. That happens and can happen, it doesn't matter is it is a homo or heterosexual relationship.
