Wouldn’t speaking words phonetically backwoods make more sense than doing it with the letters and junk?
Wouldn’t speaking words phonetically backwoods make more sense than doing it with the letters and junk?
It would be way to hard for readers to understand.
Absolute newfag here. what are some good reads featuring Zatanna?
Dini's stuff on her is pretty good
That being said, she has been in so little stuff it might be worth just reading all of it
Can someone please explain to me why the magician character doesn't specialize in illusions, and instead mostly does reality warping bullshit? One of the most common complaints about Zatanna is that she's borderline unusable because she can just solve any problem instantly. What slack-jawed retard thought it was a good idea to let her be able to do that in the first place?
The problem isn't the powerset - it's getting people to accept she's better than Batman.
That applies to literally every superhero.
Why does the Justice League have other characters anyway?
Because for as much as they'd like to, DC can't just straight up rename themselves "Batman Comics".
Dini's run
Seven soldiers of victory
But honestly you can't be too picky so might as well read New 52 JLD and the current run
>arguing with Gardner Fox
Son, no.
>still arguing with Fox
Pls, stop.
You put her up against other supernatural antagonists
Not ordinary criminals or villains
they need to reduce the number of Bat comics
[and maybe get rid of Damien and Jason too
>DC
>Batman
>I'd like to see Gotham Knights or an equivalent comic for the ensemble cast/family
>maybe Outsiders
>maybe Birds of Prey
That. Is. It!
You look at DC and Batman in the 60s, 70s, 80s and they had back ups for Robin and Batgirl, there is no reason not to still do that.
>You put her up against other supernatural antagonists
Sure, but there are not any hard rules to what she can and can't do with her magic, so even against supernatural threats there isn't anything beyond writers contrivance why she doesn't just say 'Niw I' at the start and solve the problem in panel 4, page 1.
You need to have limits on powers to create situations for them to struggle and overcome the problem, and with Zatanna she can do ANYTHING unless for some unspoke reason she can't meaning she always operates either at 300% or 0%, with nothing in between.
Why does she say each word backwards, but not the whole sentence?
I don’t know, but I don’t like it
how does she know how to say each word backwards? Did she practice all the words beforehand. Has she ever tried a spell but had to take a moment to figure out what a certain word said backwards sounds like?
>Did she practice all the words beforehand.
Yes, her dad had her practicing early on as a girl.
Because English has an irreparably fucked-up orthography phonetically.
No. It's called SPELLING. It's about how things are written down.
neat
Okay, but what about ?
Her backward-speaking gimmick was somewhat fun for a print medium but its simply too limiting for movies, tv, animation. Its too slow, it sticks her into a purely reactive mode which is not the place to be for exciting action.
Let her be a typical high-level comicbook mage, throwing mystical attacks and putting up barriers, object manipulations, etc... all with little more than a gesture. Dr Strange, Dr Fate type stuff.
She can keep the backwards-speaking trick but save it for major castings. Basically, the out-of-combat stuff. Her combat spells are somatic, her rituals are backwards-verbal.
Isn't her thing that she doesn't actually need to say the words, it just helps her focus or something?
She doesn't need them, no. She can write them out, spell them in her own blood, think them, or do really whatever.
>how does she know how to say each word backwards
There's an easy-ish method.
First you spell the world with the International Phonetic Alphabet.
Then you just read it backwards.
The average person could probably master this in a month if they work at it full-time.
