No fucking seven-year old is going to setup their CartoonNetwork app account on their iPad so they can watch some bullshit (Especially when the app doesn't fucking work half the time) when going to YouTube and watching some Lets Player play Pokemon is just ten times easier.

Whereas back in the 90's, it was established with HBO that you can make a TV show so goddamn good, people are willing to pay a subscription for it and even host viewing parties for their friends (Sopranos I'm talking about), kids rely entirely on their parents, and a parent will not pay extra for some kiddie cartoon when they can just show them whatever is on Netflix, something they're already subbed to for their own selves.

While the level of quality has dropped super hard (People should still be able to make a decent 11-minute cartoon on an average $200k - $300k budget), there is a reason for it. It's just transitioning, in a decade, things will have mellowed out.

While it's true budgets are shoestring and this has caused low quality shows to be propped up, the truth is, it's not monetary capital that's scarce in the arts right now, it's passion. No one cares beyond getting paid, and audiences foot the bill for any passing fad with mediocre quality.

No one really merches a tv show much at all anymore. So there is not much of a point. Disney, Cartoon Network, even Nick has slowed down with the Spongebob stuff. Outside of the lowest effort logos on tshirts. Tv shows are not really merch driven and no company seems to want to waste the money on merchandising anything short of a movie these days.

If we really see anything then it's something like a funkopop or funko mystery fig, which is really Funko buying a license to make it and not so much Disney or Warner wasting any of their own effort to produce merch.

Except for preschool age shows. Nickelodeon and Disney roll out huge merch lines for every new preschool series ever. Even things like Vampirina, and Doc McStuffins have huge aisles full of toys in Target and Walmart.

This is not a new thing. There was never much of a merch line for Disney Afternoon stuff or Spielberg shows either in the 90s.

There was the the basic level stuff like shirts, and maybe cheap things like school supplies like pens and folders with the logo on it. But that was about it. They tried making some toys for Darkwing but those did not do well. They only toys that really appeared for anything like Ducktales or Animaniacs were the little collectible minifigs from Applause that were given away with cereal, or sold in Disney Stores.

Only recently is there Disney Afternoon stuff sold since it is a nostalgia based brand right now.

I think user’s partially right on this one. From what I’ve seen CN ratings are usually 300k-500k, while Nick’s ratings are usually 500k+. Hell Nick shows can still break a million. CN really fractured their brand in the late 2000s while Nick’s done a good job of being consistent, non controversial, and appealing to normies/families. I wouldn’t call Nick dead but DAMN CN is nearly dead, and much of it isn’t cable’s fault.
