i've always wanted to try and get into them but there are so many and it's really overwhelming. what writers/artists should i look into? should i start from the very beginning or is there a better place to start? (for a bit of reference: i like spiderman, and i like batman, but on a very surface level)

If you like Spiderman you can literally just read from the beginning. Just google recommended runs for characters you like. You don't need to have read every single issue to understand the stories.

Read the classics. Here's a small list, but I encourage googling "best of" lists. There's a lot of stuff out there and you just have to read as much of it as you can. The more you read, the more you'll know what you like. For now, check these out.

The best thing you could do to start is pick the characters you want to read about, then read the classics and most celebrated stories of those characters. Then look up for the writers of the stories you liked, look up for more comics written by them.

Whenever I'm getting into something I google "best ____ ever". Jazz? "Best jazz albums ever." Anime? "best anime ever." So, google "best superhero comics ever", or "best comics ever." It's the easiest gateway into any hobby, and with the infinite resources of the internet, people have already curated lists for you.

Pick any character and then find out who the most popular writer for that character is. Start by reading all his stuff then branch out.
