Think you're in the wrong thread

I don't get the love for Hickman or Lemire. Anybody want to redpill me on either of them?

What's there to say? You like what you like.

>Hickman
East of West is pretty great. Like a near future American Game of Thrones

Sure, I just was curious what anons liked about each of them. Lemire seems to write the same story over and over, or is generic as hell; Hickman is like Morrison without the sense of fun and a bunch of graphs. Just hoping someone could explain the appeal.

Thanks, user, I'll give it a look. I've only read Secret Wars and maybe a trade of each of his Marvel books.

Max Landis

>Lemire seems to write the same story over and over, or is generic as hell
When I think of things like Essex County, or Sweet Tooth, or Royal City, or Black Hammer, etc. etc. the last thing I'm thinking is "generic". When I think generic I think big 2 guys like Tomasi or Tynion who just make villain of the month action movie stories over and over.

I mean, if you've read a lot of his stuff and still feel that way, that's fine, as long as you've informed yourself. I feel you aren't though based on you saying
>I've only read Secret Wars and maybe a trade of each of his Marvel books.
How can you say you don't get the love for someone when you've only read 1 thing they ever did, which was an Event comic to boot? I would look into Fantastic Four/FF, or Avengers/New Avengers, or East of West, or Manhattan Projects. Manhattan Projects is my favorite of his and a pretty unique comic book experience.

Kudos for including David Lapham. Love his creator-owned work. Here's my list:

1. Moore - we still have two months until his final book is out (yeah, right!).
2. Morrison - while I haven't read anything by him in a couple of years (his Heavy metal work was utter shite) I'll probably give his Green Lantern run a read when it hits a dozen issues.
3. David Lapham- Stray Bullets is one of my all-time favs.
4. Los Bros Hernandez - because they fucking rock.
5. Jason - simply love his books. Hey, Wait is beyond heartbreaking.

And one more just because:

6. Nick Drnaso - Sabrina is one of the better comic books published in the last few years. I mean, it's a near masterpiece.

Sorry, I should clarify. His superhero stuff seems generic, his whole indie work seems to be some variation on "sad person is sad in a Canadian farm town" -- which was literally my life, so I'm good for those.

Fair enough on Hickman, part of why I'm looking for recs. I've read probably 20-30 of his Marvel comics in total, and except for FF it left me cold, but I'll probably try and read his whole FF run at some point. I want to believe the X-Men hype.

>Ewing
>Johns

Yeah, Sabrina was pretty kino. I'm curious to see the movie.

I agree that Lemires superhero stuff is below his standards. His creator owned stuff is worlds better . But if it’s not your thing it’s not your thing

Ewing, Morrison, Hickman, Johns, Waid

1. Al Ewing
2. Grant Morrison
3. Jonathan Hickman
4. Chip Zdarsky
5. Gaiman

Eh, just saw who is adapting it. Not my favorite director. While I thought Cabin in the Woods was good fun, I found Bad Times at El Royale a cheap Pulp Fiction knock-off. Hope the adaptation switches hands and we get a better filmmaker on board, someone with more experience handling heavier thematic issues.

Maybe that’s why Black Hammer seems so dull? It’s a meandering mess desu.

>It’s a meandering mess
Sounds like a recommendation to me. I love meandering messes. You hit a certain age you get tired of the same old structure and start looking for something different.

- Tom King
- Scott Snyder
- James Tynion
- Donny Cates
- Geoff Johns

All absolute masters of the craft and will go down as a collection of the greatest of all time

>Lemire seems to write the same story over and over, or is generic as hell
Most writers work around a common thematic argument. In Lemire's case, Lemire writes a lot about no matter how broken they are, family is what keeps us going and another argument in his work deals with loneliness and isolation.

Even Morrison, Ellis, Ennis, Moore, etc. have common thematic arguments that show up in most of their work.

This but I’d like to add Scott Lobdell and Peter Tomasi. Modern day Morrison/Moore

not that user, but here are my personal Hickman Rankings
1. East of West (incomplete; 4 issues to go)
2. F4/FF
3. Manhattan Projects (incomplete; possibly cancelled)
4. Black Monday Murders (incomplete; 4 issues to go)
5. Nightly News
6. A Red Mass For Mars
7. New Avengers/Avengers (including Infinity and Secret Wars)
8. Secret Warriors
9. Pax Romana
10. SHIELD
11. Pax Romana
12. The Red Wing
13. The Dying and the Dead (incomplete; 3 issues left to go)

IF you read any of his work, check my top 5

In no particular order.
>Snyder
>King
>tomasi
>Tynion IV
>Percy

Morrison
Priest
Hickman
Gaiman
Miller

.

Will do, user, thanks

I guess I'd say Mariko Tamaki, Peter Tomasi, Kieron Gillen, Jen Wang, and Los Bros Hernandez? I'm not reading a lot of superhero comics these days and uh, subsequently, I'm enjoying what I'm reading a lot more.

What's Jen Wang done? I don't know the name but I love Mariko and Los Bros.

Mostly graphic novel work. In Real Life, The Prince and the Dressmaker, Koko Be Good...I think she's only done creator-owned all-ages graphic novels so far. I like her a lot.

Ennis, Morrison, priest,, John's, simone

Milligan, Ennis, Carey, Gillen and Jeff Parker

Gaiman
Ellis
Ewing
Moore
Hickman

In no particular order

Moore, Miller, Milligan, Tillie Walden and Dalrymple

Tom King has written good stuff, rebirthtard.

>Meandering mess
I disagree. It's just not driven by its plot.

Keep it coming Yea Forums. I'm compiling the answers so I can make a reliable list of top 5 writers. If someone appears several times on multiple lists then it surely means they must be good.

>Lapham
>Lemire
>Brubaker
>Russell
>Ennis
This is based on their recent work, otherwise It'd be full of Brits.

I'm pretty sure that almost every single person in this thread is fucking with you.
