This show's never been grimdark in the first place. It just feels a bit darker than most Disney media since it's a tv show, so its naturally longer length allows for more of those "Damn, that's kinda fucked up if you think about it for too long" moments that appear in every Disney film anyway. I wouldn't worry.
Fucking ridiculous how they do the cast and crew like this. There were live performances from the cast planned too. I'm just happy the crew was given free reign to do whatever they wanted, otherwise I'd be a LOT more pissed off at the mouse than I already am. Their flatout refusal to meaningfully support the show in any capacity beyond its production is outright retarded and a waste of time for the folks who spent countless hours working on it. You know, it's entirely possible that Rapunzel really does become omnipotent once she gets the Moonstone, and she just sort of... puts it in storage, I guess? After her adventure is over and she and Eugene get married. Like, maybe she'll always have the ability to access the Sundrop and Moonstone's powers, she just kind of keeps it switched off in the future except in the event of a future emergency. Sort of a "break glass if world is threatened" kind of thing.

It's probably not likely, but the art does make me wonder.

I think them retconning the wedding for her to still have her hair (Or leaving it open for her to get it back in some capacity) is entirely possible. If Frozen 2 really is a gateway for Disney to add DEEPEST for a princess crossover they might go that route.

This is what I think is more likely. I doubt they'll tamper with Ever After too much, so I think Raps will still have short hair by the time she and Eugene tie the knot. I just think it's well within the realm of possibilities that her hair won't be PERMANENTLY gone. If she keeps both powers, she'd probably have the ability to regrow it and cut it at will.

I mean, we really don't know what's supposed to happen after Rapunzel gets the Moonstone, do we? Demanitus talks about her wielding a huge amount of power and says that she's the best person for it. We all assumed that she was going to give both of the powers up and send them back into space, or something, but what if she doesn't?

This is also something to consider. Forget about IF Rapunzel can give up the power of the Moonstone and the Sundrop. CAN she do it? Is it physically possible? Because the Sundrop, at least, seems to be woven into her very essence. This is a change from the movie, where it seemed like all the Sundrop's power was contained in her hair, and Eugene cutting her hair relieved her of the Sundrop's essence. But the show seems to be saying that Rapunzel doesn't just have the Sundrop's power; it's that Rapunzel IS the Sundrop now. She seems to be united with the Sundrop at the very core of her being. Can she ever truly get rid of it?

If she got rid of an essential part to it before (Ability to heal others, although she can still heal herself according to Chris), I have no doubt she could be rid of all of it.

Top theory about the Other Rapunzel in her consciousness is that it was the Sundrop, sapient and helpful. It simply doesn't distinguish itself from Rapunzel. They're one.

Based if true, just because that sounds like a really neat concept. Especially kino if Cass has a moonstone equivalent in her consciousness that goads her on, calls her weak, fuels her hatred, etc.

The difference is that Cass merged with the Moonstone later in life. She essentially grafted it on to her previously existing self. Whereas with Rapunzel, she's been merged with the Sundrop since before she was born. They literally came together while Raps was still developing in the womb.

This raises the possibility that Cass' merger with the Moonstone might be unstable. Instead of being a clean, helpful fusion, Cassandra and the Moonstone might be a troubled, problematic merger. So if there is an Other Cass in her head, it might be a hostile one, as opposed to how helpful Other Raps was.

It seems a decent guess that the Sundrop would react to Matthews’ attempts to extract it and manifest that way to keep Rapunzel from succumbing

Other than Matthews’ dream, the sun drop has shown its self-conscious in season 1. In every Rapunzel’s nightmare, her hair is uncontrollably lifted and acts like tentacles. When the threat is coming, the hair acts again and encourages Raps to face her destiny in her conscious. I think in S3 the sun drop’s conscious would be revealed further.

Does that mean when Raps finally destroy or merge and send away the moonstone and sundrop, she will lose a huge part of her personality?

I'd see it more as a thing like the Sundrop modeled itself after Rapunzel rather than Rapunzel being modeled after the Sundrop. I don't think Chris wants to run that kind of game. It may have influenced who she became, but her personality is "set" I think

It's called Before Ever After, basically a pilot special to the TV show. It explains how Rapunzel grows her hair back and how the lore of the main plot was settled.

Watching the 2010 movie again if you've already seen it isn't necessary, but I recommend it to any new viewer just because it's a really enjoyable and underappreciated film overall. Also a good refresher for going in.

This show is kino precisely because it takes so many classic Disney tropes and plays around with them. It subverts them, but not in a Last Jedi way, it does it in a way that actually honors them but also pokes at the trouble with some of them.

My favorite subversion has to be when Raps lets her guard down and lets Cass into the Moonstone chamber despite Adira warning against it. What would have been a "Golly, I should have trusted my friend all along! Time to act against my stubborn nature to atone for my wrongs." moment somewhere else is instead a costly mistake with Raps severely underestimating just how much resentment Cass really had built up toward her. Good stuff.

Is this actually a good show with good all-ages writing, or is it one of those definitely-for-kids shows that Yea Forums seems to randomly like because it has cute girls in it? I liked the movie, but a lot of TV spinoffs are pitched to a much younger audience.

It's a perfect all-ages show that mixes fun and heartwarming moments with brief disturbing scenes and more than a normal amount of suffering and grief. I'd actually go so far as to say it's pitched more for older kids than younger kids. I wouldn't let kids in single digits watch this show, it's aimed more at the 10-to-12 year old demographic. There's a lot of stuff that younger kids wouldn't appreciate about it.

It was HYSTERICAL to read back through the real-time threads around the last two episodes, as somebody who watched the entire show only after S2 was over. Everyone was completely convinced that the idea of Cass being the traitor was a fakeout. And the show itself even made you buy into this idea with the "Eugene is the traitor, the prophecy is self-fulfilling" bit in the finale. Just a masterful job executing a twist that wasn't even really a twist at all.

I was expecting one or the other, I sure as hell wasn't expecting both. I kinda wish it went on a bit longer just because Bruce Campbell playing an unwitting antagonist bound by his beliefs was really entertaining and Eugene's relationship with him leaning into that more could have been cool. Aw well.

Cass turning is quite foreseeable as she obviously became a different person after quitting the door. Initially I guess in S2 finale Eugene will have a "fake" betrayal by Demanitus testing his faith in Rapunzel and Cass will start her betrayal arc in S3 but I never expected she merged the moonstone inside her and transform to Super Saiyan Blue in the final scene.

This was such an emotionally complex episode. Cass alone with a freshly Obliviated Rapunzel. No emotional baggage, no Eugene or princess Sundrop bullshit. Just the two of them and the wide waiting world.

They never flat out said it, but it was very clear Cass was tempted to ditch the gang and run away with Rapunzel. She knew it was wrong to think about, but the thoughts wouldn't go away.

I spent all of Season 2 realizing that Cass is well within her rights to schlick to lesbian fantasies of herself and Rapunzel. Raps is either as dense as a rock or she DOES think Cass is fun and pretty, she just loves Eugene so much that she's closed herself off to all other romantic possibilities.

I get the feeling that of the three of them, she'd be the first and the loudest to suggest a threesome/menage a trois ending, despite her possessiveness over Eugene. She really does seem extremely fond of Cass, and she's too smart a girl to do some of the shit she does without knowing the implications behind it.

Nobody's got more support than Cass than Rapunzel. Most people laugh her out of the room when she says she wants to be a guard, but Raps was the first not to. And when Disney won't budge that just makes it worse.
