Zeurel and Palmer animated a fair sum of the pilot, but Colaleo did as well for most of it. I think he did the entire cat house party scene and definitely the intro. Everything else Palmer and Zeurel was carrying the heavyweight.

For the character designs, it was Colaleo and Weir that did them and by God I love them. If anything, Nico is doing himself alright for hiring and tasking such talented people just for some project show and it's quite impeccable.

As soon as I found out that she was one of the leads in animation design for Ollie and Scoops, I was more than happy to see her do her magic with characters, you can see the quirkiness of her design very well with Bivvins and most of the cats in the pilot.

Steven Universe wasn't created from storyboad/artists-first mentality. It was derived from test audiences and parent/teacher groups, just like everything Cartoon Network makes these days.

The problem is people who grew up learning about John's "board-driven" philosophy are trying to apply it to these huge grand stories with deep lore and mystery, usually inspired by stuff that probably wasn't board-driven to begin with. So the philsophy isn't flawed, just the people who are mis-using it. No one out there really is using "board-driven" to make funny cartoons, except maybe those new Looney Tunes shorts.

As in cartoony cartoons? Then yeah, those tend to work a lot more when it's artist-driven. Writing out visual gags is not as effective as drawing them. That's how I interpret it.

I consider there to be a difference between "cartoon" and "animated show". A cartoon is something that is wacky and over-the-top like Angry Beavers. An animated show is something that is a story but drawn on paper, like King of the Hill or Batman: The Animated Series. Maybe that's not how John K. meant it and truly wanted to ban writers, but he also LOVED King of the Hill, so obviously, he has some leeway for writers.

Also keep in mind, John K. entered the indsutry during the 80's when writers and artists clashed a shit ton and both were unhappy.

It's unironically a huge dealbreaker for me when it comes to faces. Call me a fag or something like that, but I've always found the face the most attractive part of the body. You can be stupidly fat or a guy, but as long as your face is genuinely interesting too gaze at, it's an okay in my book.

For example, the Owl House. Completely ruined for me because of how facial designs are, Luz and Eda just don't find it interesting for me. Especially with Groening characters. Leela. Marge, the Amazonian women. they just turn me off with how the face looks.

Like what? Doesn't everybody always complain about modern cartoons always using bean mouth? This is a nice change of pace and it looks cute and unique. Also, Anne Boonchuy's design is definitely worse. It's too detailed in all the wrong ways. Having the leaves/twigs in her hair, the SJMS crest on her shirt, and the missing shoe as consistent parts of Anne Boonchuy's design just adds needless details that the character designers, animators, and directors will have to keep an eye on in every fucking episode. Plus, they imply that despite finding herself on an island inhabited by civilized frogs in clothing of their own, Anne will never once find a pond to wash her hair in or get one of her new frog friends to make her some new clothes/shoes. It's a cute design, but it doesn't make sense in a production standpoint or in the context of the show.

Anne does get some new clothes eventually, she even appears in a fancy dress in the latest episode and has her hair styled and cleaned.
At this point I'm convinced she's gonna have the leaves and shit in her hair because because it's comforting to her.
That, or she's just tired of picking twigs out of her hair everyday and just said "fuck it".

Luz's design tries so hard to be different from the "Calarts" bean mouth, that it falls over into trying to be like the French or Japanese when it comes to styling. Sure you got me there that it is a refreshing change of pace for once, but I just can't condone to it being anymore interesting than what you find over in the Japanese animation industry.

As someone who waited so patiently for Owl House to drop, and just kept hoping that it'll get somewhere; it just burns a hole in you knowing that the design could change at anytime and it completely takes you by surprise. That's how it became for me when I saw an updated design for Luz and Eda, desu. Amphibia seemed to capture the more technical side of that style and it does look nice, while as much as I have been waiting for Owl House, it just kills me that this is it. Looking at a poster and a slight reveal kills you on the inside.

I'm personally not a fan of John K's work, but I also think that belt-wielding shot looks cool. The pose has good lighting & construction, the belt & arm animation is nice, and I'm sure that Liquor's sliding movement was used to make the scene feel even more unnerving and menacing.

It's kinda like how OK K.O.! occasionally animates its characters with limited frames to accentuate how silly a scene should feel. Not everything has to do with budgets or cheap shortcuts, user.

I don't see how any of that would be an issue. The Owl House stayed close to Dana's appealing style, and Luz's design is still unique in its own right by having an iconic, easily-spottable hairstyle and overall color palette.

Also, what "updated designs" are you talking about? The characters look the same as they have since the first announcement back in February 2018.
