That time Bruce Wayne showed up in HELLBLAZER as Constantine's lover

Buckle up, boys. We're entering Brian Azzarello's fantasy land.

Why John and Bruce?

Because Brian Azzarello ships them.

The worst hellblazer writer period, azzarello is absolute trash

I mean his hellblazer is bad yeah but have you read 100 bullets? that shit rules.

Just look at the second panel of text in this, fucking drivel

Fuck you for posting this

Calm your tits, user.

Now the name "Stanley" here was originally supposed to be just a pseudonymous Bruce's using because he's doing some shady stuff, but later on ends up becoming this character's real name after he becomes a Bruce Wayne espy.

I don't know. Maybe he saw John Constantine as VERTIGO's Batman? I know a lot of people do. So he thought of hooking up VERTIGO's Batman and DC's Batman as a couple or something?

Attached: Hellblazer 163 (2001) (digital-Empire) 017.jpg (1988x3056, 1.52M)

He's very young, so apparently he didn't had all his ethics and vows ingrained just yet, and it will make a bit of sense at the end. Though, that's a bit of a moot point afterwards when he becomes merely an espy.

Now as the story goes... when Brian Azzarello asked DC if they'd let him use Bruce Wayne in his HELLBLAZER run as John Constantine's foil and romantic interest, that they apparently said "YES", as crazy as it sounds, that is... until they went back on their word half-way into the run and said "NO". That left Azzarello frustrated and angry, because he had tons of things planned out for that duo.
So instead of using Bruce Wayne like he intended, he took "Stanley" here and turned him into his own character. This new Stanley would be his way of getting revenge on DC editorial by writing the most mean take on Bruce Wayne he could, using Stanley as an espy.

Now here's where the fun truly starts.

This makes me wonder who made the agreement and who went back on it. I assume that Levitz wouldn't have allowed it in the first place (and the timing would be close to when Authority was getting heavily edited).

Attached: Hellblazer 169 (2002) (digital-Empire) 008.jpg (1988x3056, 1.04M)

See now this is making me think Azzarello might as well write Batman and Constantine expies so he could show how his Hellblazer and Batman: Damned stuff was supposed to go.

Yup. You thought right. It is THAT Jason they're talking about.

YES! Azzarello went there. This is just the beginning.

this is why i hated his fucking run on hellblazer
jsut no need

Speaking of BATMAN: DAMNED it seems that the book was indeed going to have something sexual between Batman and John Constantine too. Because while promoting the book Azzarello couldn't stop reference this precise HELLBLAZER run i'm currently dumping and the whole S.W. Manor controversy that accompanies it. He talked about it in the sense that with BLACK LABEL he was finally free to do what he wanted with the characters.

Funny how that went.

To be fair, this is a pissed off Azzarello going scourged Earth.

I have no clue how Azz would have thought it was going to 100% go through. The editors who controlled Constantine had a long history of preventing him from interacting with a lot of other characters ever since Hellblazer launched as a mature readers title.
Tony Bedard as editor probably thought it would be funny (it seems like his kind of humor), but Berger and Levitz probably wouldn't have approved.

I'll always cry at the fact that Lee Bermejo is forever chained to Azarello. Such a tragedy.

I think that whoever approved probably thought that Azzarello's Bruce Wayne would be sorta of VERTIGO's own mature version of the character. He'd be gay, for one. Or bissexual, at the very least.

The biggest problem is that many of the results give up "Stanley" Artgem, the cover artist that works for DC, instead of anything remotedly connected with the character,

Just read maybe the last issue of the series if you want to see how it ends.
But you won't understand why it happens unless you've read the wedding story..John uses Dark John as a decoy again, but is unaware that Dark John tries to rape Gemma while at the wedding. Thats why she "kills" him

I really fucking hate Azzarello. He's nothing, but a tryhard edgemaster. He doesn't have the charm of Ennis and even lacks the cynical humor of Millar.

I read this thing but never once thought this guy was anything like bruce wayne.

Is this where "you some kind of faggot? because I am" comes from?

Gee, I wonder why DC nixed his take on Batman. What a fucking retard

Earlier arc, same artist. You can find it by checking which issues he worked on.
Milligan man. Nothing that came after was good, but getting cancelled was a mercy killing.

OP said that issue was written in response to not getting to write a version of Bruce Wayne, so he went full ham on making Stanley an awful person

Yup. Not this arc in particular.

Yeah, Azzarello went to town on this in pure spite. You guys will see in the following pages.

This page has been posted a lot here over the years.

Fun fact: the detective guy is an Azzarello OC who first appeared in the very down to earth Gangland anthology. Not that it really matters

I hope this scene will be included in the new Young Adult Constantine book or maybe at least the dog fucking

What a nifty take on the whole Batman's crusade.

Oh, look. The Not-Waynes are here.

Attached: Hellblazer 173 (2002) (digital-Empire) 019.jpg (1988x3056, 788K)

Damn. That's harsh, and lenghty.

I kinda liked prison arc
Hard Time iirc

Mr. agent here doesn't seem to like our Not-Bruce Wayne.

Feels more like Phantom Stranger. Destiny would never act like this

Another one of Azzarello's mean commentary on Batman. Wanna hazard a guess?

This. Just assumed that he was another Azzarello oc, with some odd aspects here and there

Attached: Hellblazer 174 (2002) (digital-Empire) 015.jpg (1988x3056, 1011K)

Hard Time and the Ice man arc was not bad. What came after was simply hellish

Attached: Hellblazer 174 (2002) (digital-Empire) 016.jpg (1988x3056, 1008K)

Attached: Hellblazer 174 (2002) (digital-Empire) 017.jpg (1988x3056, 899K)

As I recall this was the only time in Hellblazer John Constantine was depicted in a consensual relationship with another man.

Attached: Hellblazer 174 (2002) (digital-Empire) 018.jpg (1988x3056, 882K)

Attached: Hellblazer 174 (2002) (digital-Empire) 019.jpg (1988x3056, 828K)

That's a nice and very brutal action sequence.

Attached: Hellblazer 174 (2002) (digital-Empire) 020.jpg (1988x3056, 702K)

Some have theoryzed that John Constantine also acts as a stand-in for the Joker. The whole Fool/Trickster thing. But reallty, it is a bit flinsy.

Attached: Hellblazer 174 (2002) (digital-Empire) 021.jpg (1988x3056, 908K)

Attached: Hellblazer 174 (2002) (digital-Empire) 022.jpg (1988x3056, 845K)

Goddammit

the DCyou hellblazer book gave him a positive gay relationship

Attached: Hellblazer 174 (2002) (digital-Empire) 023.jpg (1988x3056, 744K)

Attached: Hellblazer 174 (2002) (digital-Empire) 024.jpg (1988x3056, 634K)

And that's a wrap. Some weird shit.
Azzarello is still to this day trying to hook Batman and John Constantine up.

Oh, i forgot. Azzarello and this artist did a Batman book together. A proper Batman book. And some of the sexual deviants from this arc? They appear it it.

Attached: Hellblazer 174 (2002) (digital-Empire) 025.jpg (1988x3056, 1.07M)

Thanks for posting this.

I fucking hated it.

Thanks, I hated it.

>Oh, i forgot. Azzarello and this artist did a Batman book together.

I'm pretty sure they also did the Flashpoint Batman mini, too.

FUUUUUCK. I just realized that Batman: Damned pull the same crap with Joker being thought dead, while Batman himself doesn't believe it and try to hunt him.

Nah, that was Eduardo Risso, the guy he did 100 Bullets with.

Post it then

As long as unrealistic super tranny is there, I'm sold.

Yeah, that's Eduardo Russo. You're confusing him with Giuseppe Camuncoli, who did this run. For reference, the latter also did most of Peter Milligan's run though his art style had noticeably gotten worse by then.

Wait no, now I'm the retard, that's actually Marcelo Frusin. They're both Argentinians though so they may as well be the same person.

I wonder how a relationship between Batman and John Constantine would have worked out without all this bile.

I've never read azzies run. Damn this is terrible.

I stopped after Ellis. Never had any interest in continuing t. Glad I didn't. Did I miss much?

People seem to like Carey's run but everyone after that was passable to bad. Milligan's run had a promising start but quickly slid in to shit and never recovered.

This one isn't even subtle

>that bottom panel
I can't believe Constantine is a hentai girl

whats even the deal here? he feeds kids to bats? why?

Probably would've been in whatever was supposed to happen in Batman: Damned.

Constantine in America was way more fun and interesting than people trying to be Ennis lite every other issue.
