What's your favourite Grant Morrison work?
What's your favourite Grant Morrison work?
For me, it's The Filth. Good combination of weird psychedelic schizo absurdity and a tight and well organized plot.
I also like how there's that one brief panel in Invisibles when King Mob is phased into Outer Church hell and he's depicted as what would become the main character of The Filth (balding out of shape middle age couch potato surrounded by a bunch of random jumbo-sized disembodied organs).
And with the Flex Mentallo comic you get yet another connecting moment where Ultraviolet Mentallium makes Flex lose his identity and live out entire lives as different person.
One of the Mentallium Man's heads aside from the Ultraviolet one is called "Lamb and Turkey Mentallium," and lamb and turkey is what Greg feeds his cat in The Filth.
I believe all three of these comics are part of the same shared universe / multiverse in part for those reasons. Greg Feely is Gideon Starorzewski (King Mob) forced by the Outer Church to live out an entire sick and corrupted torture life within the span of an instant and Wally Sage (fake name used by the musician protagonist of Flex Mentallo) considers how an alternate universe version of himself could be a comic writer as his made up childhood superhero character Flex struggles against the Mentallium Man's UV head making Flex's identity dissolve, and Starorzewski does something similar in using a fictional character of his (Gideon Stargrave) to live out a fantasy life while being tortured and interrogated. So they're all the same person basically with each world connected by some sort of altered state of consciousness and mutual relative fictionality.
I'm probably going to get hanged for this but New X-Men
It was good. I don't know why some people seem to really hate that run in particular.
I guess the Frank Quitely art can be polarizing (I like it, but I can see why others wouldn't). And the Xorn thing was kind of weird the way it went from him being revealed as Magneto to getting retconned as him somehow not being Magneto after his run.
Like it or not he at least took it somewhere pretty different. I was a fan of the Cassandra Nova villain too. She was very creepy and frightening with how detached and alien her behavior was and the threat she posed having all that power without Xavier's self-control and firm moral grounding.
Morrison has said they form his hypersigil trilogy
It’s gotta be Multiveristy or JLA for me
I need to revisit The Invisibles. I feel like it will be a different read after years of browsing the chans.
I liked Morrison's Damian - that was lots of fun.
I'm very fond of his action comics run and flex mentallo
bump
Flex Mentallo, easily.
All-Star is a damn close second
just started reading The Invisibles
Invisibles
Flex Mentallo
All-Star Superman
Is his Green Lantern book worth picking up?
yes
Same here!
Seven Soldiers, for me, managed to distill everything I love about DC Comics into one nice package so that's my number one, but I also love Flex, Filth, Final Crisis/Multiversity and the Batman run a lot.
I found the Dark Nights: Metal: Dark Knights Rising: The Wild Hunt comic way more moving than it had any right to be. I'm now a Detective Chimp super fan.
I find his most famous stuff (All-Star, Animal Man, Doom Patrol, Invisibles, We3) a bit overrated but still enjoyable. I was a bit cold on his GL but the last couple of issues have turned me around. Xeen Arrow ftw.
I'm reading The Invisibles for the first time now. At first I was intrigued but not that into it. Then somewhere it clicked with me and became so fucking cool
A Serious house, on serious Earth
Batman and robin
Flex mentallo I feel like it manages to capture his whole philosophy and world view.
Green Lantern is shaping up to be my fave
It's by no means his best work but it's second best X-men run easily. He gave to mutants so much needed new direction, such a shame basically all his ideas were retconned.
X- FUCKING-MEN
I still don't get just what her powerset is.
I have a soft spot for JLA.
Flex Mentallo is the bible of Have Sex
*seeth for what he is missing*
The Invisibles. what a wild ride
Pretentious.
No u
Batman for me.
Doom Patrol. Although haven't finished his Batman and X-Men runs
Top 3 are Doim Patrol, The Invisibles, and Animal Man. Need to give multiversity another read
haven't kept up with GL in years
I really got to check out Grant's run but I don't know if I should play catch up to actually understand whats going on
I jumped in having only read a handful of GL stories and I understand fine. If anything is relevant it's Silver Age stuff.
good to know thanks
seems like there is only 8 issues right now. Catching up will be fast
Seaguy.
Vertigo dying defo means no volume 3 though.
his GL run started off kinda slow but's it's getting really good
on issue 6
>Frank Quitely art can be polarizing
Honestly it's all the other art that's the problem, except Silvestri of course. Igor Kordey , who to be fair was doing a rush job to fill in comics way behind schedule and is capable of doing great work, turned out some of the ugliest art Marvel has ever published.
it's standalone, you don't need to catch up on anything
>Animal Man
>Seaguy
I found these pretty unremarkable.
holy shit untill now I thought GL was children's cartoon
Hellblazer #25-26
Despite being one of his tamest ones i keep going back the most to Annihilator, it might be mostly propeled by the fact that i want to suck Frazer Irving's hands until one of us dies.
His more recent one-off OC stuff like Annihilator and Nameless are the only things I *don't* like. I feel like he was too self-consciously trying to write a hit with those two.
Klaus on the other hand while also recent and almost OC-ish I thought was great (both the original and the annual sequels he's been doing each Christmas). I think because I could respect it more as an actual major folk figure he was working with instead of some guy like Max Nomax who he made up to be an archetypal character but who really didn't earn that status.
I couldn't believe Nameless pulled " and it was all a dream" at the very end. The fucking balls on Morrison
