I'm watching Meeseeks and Destroy and holy fuck, season 1 was so fucking good. What happened? How did this show drop in quality so fast?
I'm watching Meeseeks and Destroy and holy fuck, season 1 was so fucking good. What happened...
Meseeks was bad and the season finale was awful. People see S1 with rosey retrospection when S2 was way better.
Reminder that he did nothing wrong.
Women took over.
Wait what?
Explain please, I dropped the show after 2 episodes into season 2
Exactly as it reads. Women went on to produce the show, quality took a nose dive.
After watching the commentary for Season 1 I've come to the conclusion that it was really just Roiland's and Ridley's writing that made Season 1 so good. They said that after Season 1 it was harder and harder to rassle Roiland into the writing room. So Harmon saw this as an oppurtunity to shoe horn more of his stupid alcohol-fueled depression episodes.
Got damn it...
I use to work at a McD's and I remember we sold this sauce. These R&M fans can barging into the store screeching about some sauce, kicking things over, and even trying to attack us.
This damned show made it hell for me at McD's. Why are the fans so retarded?!
All the worse episodes of the show had Harmon's hand on it.
Season 3 sucked because they failed to follow up to all things they had built in Season 1 and 2 to do more wacky episodic shit, without the charm and novelty from Season 1 and 2.
It's also why Bushwack episode feels so good, they changed the formula even if they did just a random comedic episode without stakes.
That's where you're wrong. I'd say you're one of those worthless producers but there are no women on 4Channel.
Season 2 was already getting pretty bad.
>it was harder and harder to rassle Roiland into the writing room
Wait, what? Like, Roiland didn't want to come to writing meetings anymore? I know that Roiland is slightly stand-offish around Harmon (I get this feeling Roiland doesn't like working with Harmon but feels like he's obligated to because he helped get R&M off the ground), but I always thought Justin was very involved in the writing process since he improvises a lot.
It started huffing the farts of its own fame.
It was always shit
I like how it was said women weren't interested in the show when it was in production, but after it blew up, now they want to work on it.
What garbage taste
Harmon began projecting his own issues following his divorce onto the show whilst Roiland clearly wants to move onto other things aside from R&M.
Meseeks is still funny to this day and the only good episode in S2 was the Purge one.
Rick and Morty season 1 was good because it was "highschool kid and his asshole sci-fi uncle". The show ruined itself by leaning too hard into family drama and the science fiction stuff, it was better when it was more focused on Morty and Summer in school and how Rick's shit affects their everyday lives.
I'm a bit fuzzy on the details since it's been about a year since I last listened to the commentary but I think they were gearing up for Season 2 while they were recording it and were complaining that compared to Season 1 that Roiland wasn't in the writing room nearly as much. I'm a lazy bastard so you'd have to scour the commentaries yourself to find it.
The women taking over made it far worse.
Was just going to comment at that. Poor guy.
Thin premise and jumped into 'awesomely wicked series long plotline' too early.
Its almost like that infamous game fandom image where a girl shows up midway through the life cycle then half the original players leave
I am so sick of people on the internet saying what girls like or don't like.
there's a lot of girls, they like different things.
I'm going on a rant, but some internet fuckhead was complaining about the original VTMB being "a male power fantasy" when I have personally met women who were totally into characters like jeanette BECAUSE they were sexualized to hell and back.
the purge episode was S2's weakest episode by far.
What the fuck is your vagina ranting on about? We're talking about the cold hard fact that when they were looking for writers for the show in season 1, not a single woman submitted her resume. It wasn't until afterwards when they pointed this out during the end of season 2 production did women start flooding their inboxes with their resumes.
It's hard to take seriously a show that so thoroughly criticizes itself without out being too tropey about it. The show acts self aware but avoids the grotesque self parody that hipster boomer shows like Always Sunny or I don't know what else you guys like, oh, Gravity Falls.
Here's where I mention I don't even understand how Homestuck can be enjoyed.
I just want season 4,i'm bored and i miss this show so godamn much
>it was better when it was more focused on Morty and Summer in school and how Rick's shit affects their everyday lives.
That's a terrible opinion and you should feel bad for having it.
It got really popular and people you didn't like started liking it so you had to act like the show is completely shit, yet you won't stop watching it because deep down you know it's not as bad as you make it out to be.
>Yea Forums
This. Here,it's full of hipsters in denial
Just be wise a bunch of minority children wear Rick and Morty bookbag doesn't mean I have to start hating it like an NPC Hipster deush.
They stopped trying to write good stories and started writing fanservice episodes to get more shares, likes and follows on social media.
WUBBA LUBBA DUB-DUB, nothing m*burp*atters Mort. Science! Pickle RIIIIICK! You're not evil. Worse, you're smart.
To be fair wasn't wubba lubba supposed to be shitting on catch phrases and fans just didnt pick up on it?
Women.
IIRC, Justin misread woob-woob-woob in the heat of the moment. It only later became an ironic catchphrase shitting on sitcom catchphrases. And only later, during season 2 did it get accepted as a legit catchphrase by normies after wubba lubba dub dub was retroactively made Deep™ and Meaningful® by establishing it to mean "I am in great pain, please help me".
Exactly.Around the time the show got popular on Reddit (cue:youtube.com
Justin seems like such a nice likeable guy, whereas while Dan is a clever enough writer, the more you dig into who he is as a person and how he treats people, the more he seems like a total asshole.
*distance themselves from the dreaded Reddit
It didn’t, Season 3 had one bad episode and Yea Forums has tricked itself into hating Rick and Morty because of the shitty fanbase.
It was never good to begin with
dan harmon:
>drunkenly raking some guy over the coals for hours on twitter for a mild comment he took offense to
>pointed emotional cruelty towards sarah silverman towards the end of his stint working on her show leading up to his firing
>drama with chevy chase on community, who is also a known asshole, but whereas a reasonable person would try to tone drama down, harmon publicly humiliated chevy in front of his family by playing his answering machine messages to the cast and crew and leading them all to shout "fuck chevy"
>all the drama got him removed from community for a season
>mocking a mcdonalds employee's low station in life as a lowly corporate slave compared to his status as a wealthy guy who can do what he wants, in response to the mcdonalds clerk complaining about szechuan sauce autists harassing him
>confessed to sexually harassing women working for him and then ignoring or mistreating them after they rejected him
this is just what comes to mind off the top of my head, i'm sure there's worse stuff.
other interesting facts about him.
>he seems to have a cuckolding fetish. at first i thought that scene where jerry's dad embraced being a cuckold and everyone said how beautiful it was was just another way to shit on jerry. but then i saw a video of him on youtube talking about a cuckold porn video he saw where the cuckold was on a hoverboard and he was trying to argue that this made the cuck alpha, because you can't not be alpha on a hoverboard. i noticed him say some other pro-cuckolding things too on other occasions but i can't recall them.
>he was on a podcast or radio show alongside bill burr, it was super cringey. bill burr was talking about sports and dan harmon was just quiet, which was a little awkward, but whatever, i'm sure a lot of people here also care nothing about sports. but the bad part was later in the show where harmon started talking about how he puts things up his ass while he masturbates. burr didn't mock him for it or anything but you could tell he was a little confused and weirded out.
>he's a hardcore alcoholic, and thinks of himself as a genius. obviously the inspiration for rick who is constantly drunk but still somehow inventing brilliant shit all the time. i think the 'to be fair' meme probably hit him pretty hard because of how spot on it was, not just about the fandom but about harmon himself.
>>he seems to have a cuckolding fetish. at first i thought that scene where jerry's dad embraced being a cuckold and everyone said how beautiful it was was just another way to shit on jerry. but then i saw a video of him on youtube talking about a cuckold porn video he saw where the cuckold was on a hoverboard and he was trying to argue that this made the cuck alpha, because you can't not be alpha on a hoverboard. i noticed him say some other pro-cuckolding things too on other occasions but i can't recall them
How can someone has such a shit fetish?
I could understand feetfags, scatfags or even diaperfags, their fetishes are disgusting, but at least are not humiliating.
>their fetishes are disgusting, but at least are not humiliating
No they are still humiliating, but only as a side-effect. Humiliation is the point of cuckold porn which is what adds to the stigma.
>Not identifying as the guy doing the cucking
You have no one to blame but yourself for your insecurities.Plus that's fake manufactured outrage, cuckold porn or so called "blacked" porn was always around (trust a Redtube "veteran" on this) it only became a problem when /pol/ started to use "cuck" as their new favorite insult
>Being the guy whose wife cheats on and does nothing about it
>Being the guy who helps ruin a relationship
>Being a slut who ruins the relationship
All parties are unworthy of respect.
>I could understand feetfags, scatfags or even diaperfags, their fetishes are disgusting, but at least are not humiliating.
Why the fuck do you think disgusting fetishes are more understandable than humiliation? Have you never heard of BDSM? Humiliation is one of the most mainstream, normie fetishes.
GODS NOT REAL MORTIMER WHERE MY SZECHUAN SAUCE MORTY????
Are you the type of guy who constantly rant on Raikage/Hinata porn on Paheal, that's pretty pathetic
>All parties are unworthy of respect.
I'm pretty sure BDSM doesnt catch that much flak since "leatherman" is not a /pol/ insult for liberals
early episodes had more time to be written in advance and thus had more time to be polished
knew some faggot would post this.
>Eating shit is not humiliating
Well i guess you still read capeshit after all
Most of those fetishes stem from humiliation though in more extreme forms save for footfaggotry. Most people into poop, pee, diapers/adult baby stuff, etc., are into it because of the humiliation and degradation around it.
Read it again, friend, I said eating shit is humiliating but that it's not the reason for the fetosh, unlike with cuckold porn.
This post is too weeb for me.
It's funny to think how much 2012-2013 era Yea Forums would've loved R&M.
I know ,i know but it's genuinely the only porn couple i know of that get Paheal users shit their pants in rage
Are you fucking kidding me?
Yea Forums loved the shit out of Rick & Morty back in 2013 because it was easily the best new animated series to come out of Adult Swim in YEARS.
Real talk though, anybody play/heard of Trover Saves the Universe? It looks like pure Roiland and the game's dialogue seems cringe as fuck. I thought Roiland alone was supposed to be better than shit Harmon had his hand in.
>something blows up in popularity, girls are now frauds for liking it.
I genuinely don't understand why people hate S3 that much. I though it was mostly as good as the rest. I say mostly because the Vindicators was kinda weak (tho better than Interdimensional Cable 2) and so was the finale (which as far as I know wasn't really supposed to be the finale to begin with).
And in turn humiliation fetishes stem from wanting to be powerless which stem from wanting to experience a heightened sense of vulnerability where some base part of you that you keep locked away is finally exposed to the world.
When Kanye said "Everything in the world is exactly the same" he was talking about fetishes.
IASIP is an interesting example because the entire point is mean, weird, boundary-pushing humor with little to no drama or sincerity. Like Seinfeld's "No hugging, no learning" turned up to 11.
Rick & Morty is also really into mean, weird, boundary-pushing humor except it's followed by moments of genuine pathos. Unfortunately, the writers don't seem to get that you need to like, let the genuine moments breathe before immediately undermining them with yet another joke. Season 1 was good at this, S2 was hit-and-miss, and S3 felt like it was holding you at arm's length at least 90% of the time. I couldn't even appreciate the revelation that young Beth was a fiercely intelligent amoral little monster who shut her childhood friend away in a tesseract before repressing the memory because half of the episode was dedicated said childhood friend cannibalising his incest offspring.
I guess the grotesque self-parody of IASIP (at least the first half-dozen seasons) works better for me because it's tonally consistent.
Homestuck comparison is surprisingly apt considering how trolly the epilogues were.
It’s one of those things where I remember enjoying most episodes in season 3, and then I’d look back at them and rewatch them and realize there was some quality to the show now I wasn’t a fan of. I think Pickle Rick is actually one of the better episodes that season (It was a thoughtful deconstruction but that can’t be all a show is) but I blame the fall on Harmon’s obsessive need to deconstruct Everything. He can’t make a show for three seasons, he eventually has to break his toys. I think it’s an interesting conversation on show running but I guess Women Wreck Comedy is all most of you are here to talk about.
For me it's cause of this.
Season 1/2 rick was vulnerable and weak, and didn't really pick fights unless he had to and was pushed to a corner (and even then he found ways of getting out without a gun fight).
The focus instead was on more humor, and many episodes no one died.
In S3 rick has a literal iron man suit in his skeleton at all times removing any kind of tension.
In S1, rick had to go through inter dimensional customs, and it was a huge thing and a battle which they barely got out of. In S3 rick took down the entire god damn government SOLO, a gov that has haunted him and his friends for ages making him a terrorist on the run (that he solved in one fucking episode making it feel worthless).
In s1 rick ran from scary terrie, and when he saw the dogs in mech suits his first instinct was to hide in the sewers. When he met scary terrie he also ran/hid and dealt with him a clever way.
In S3 rick would have backflipped through the window, killed every dog with a rocket launcher machine gun, and then during the scary terry part rick wouldve pulled out a dream sucking gizmo or something instantly solving the situation.
All those things make for a very different show, an action orientated one with barely any humor and that really sucks compared to what it once was.
The hoverboard cuck story:
youtube.com
Around 4:20 Harmon talks about what will happen in a 'good' cuckold porn video. So it's evident he watches a lot of this stuff.
And it ends with him basically admitting he came at the part where the cuckold was sucking the other dude's dick.
It had the perfect mix or creative writing and not dan harmon. It has since lost it
That's a very fair point, user, I get it now. Still like S3 tho, but it's true that Rick has become too much of an action hero, though I never really noticed it because he also became more and more suicidal and impulsive as time went on, so it appeared somewhat logical.
There is literally nothing wrong with being a homewrecker. If a spouse is chasing side-tail the relationship was already fucked, and I'm not ruining shit.
>Being the guy who helps ruin a relationship
if cheating can happen the relationship was doomed anyway.
Stammering edgy improv for 5 hours is still funnier than Harmon's alcoholic nihilism.
The other problem is morty.
In S1/S2 morty was innocent and pure, and worked as a perfect contrast to the depressive rick.
But now in S3, morty is becoming a mega angry/loud asshole (which i guess makes sense given what hes been through), but it completely upsets the dynamic the two characters once had and their banter isn't interesting since they are now essentially the same character.
Pure Roiland, eh? How many molestation jokes are there?
hear, hear
A lot actually. One involving pregnant ladies that some guy is injecting with drugs to give birth for him and then eating the babies, and you being allowed to kill the guy by pushing his house off a cliff (but thus killing the women). You can also not do it, the game does give you moral choices.
I've watched every episode from season 1 to 3 and they're all the same quality. I don't understand where you're coming from desu, this show has always been a 6/10 quality show
Rick & Morty specifically worked because Harmon and Roiland balanced each other. Individually they are way less interesting.
It's sadly true for a lot of creative duos.
I know I've defended season 3 here but i noticed this as well. Rick is basically becoming a Mary Sue in this show
S1 and 2 are on equal terms. S3 shat the bed.
lel
I mean he was always a mary sue, but at least back then there was some sense of danger and him not being 150% in control of every situation like he is now.
Also S3 , the whole subplot of the divorce/resolution was a bunch of fucking nothing. Literally nothing worked out and the problem fixed itself in a retarded way and kinda ignored altogether.
Another fun Harmon podcast where he talks about his love for incest porn:
youtube.com
Justin Roiland also talks about watching incest porn, although he pretends it bothers him and he turns the volume down:
youtube.com
>Seasons 1 & 2
>Writing screams of enthusiasm and writers are excited about the show they helped create.
>Humor revolves around the back and forth of Morty being innocent but stupid, and Rick being brilliant but emotionally stunted.
>Violence is frequently used to create punchlines.
>The show is essentially about the absurdity of the universe and the struggle to be happy in a frightening and unstable reality.
>Season 3
>Writing quality is heavily diluted by new writers (brought on because Twitter was literally shaking right now) and presumably shifting dynamics in the writer's room.
>Humor revolves Rick being a sociopathic, Gary Stu science god who's never incorrect, never does anything wrong, can accomplish virtually anything, and whose primary struggle is that everybody else isn't good enough to keep up with him.
>Violence is the punchline.
>The show is essentially about Rick being an utterly irredeemable asshole, with confused writers struggling and failing to not drown in the influence of the show's deified meme status.
I had very high hopes for that show. The first half of Bushworld Adventures was funnier than the entire third season.
This. He was abused by his brother he deserved a big titty gf. Fuck summer
Louis CK's leaked bit from a few months ago had him talking for five minutes about how huge black dicks are and describing them in detail. You can detect these cucks from a mile away, because they compulsively smear their fetishes all over the stage to get off. I enjoy Louis CK, but not Harmon. Harmon thinks jokes about fucking babies and murdering people is hilarious because it isn't against progressive dogma, but it can't hide how much of a coward he is. Louis might be a cuck, but he's still willing to joke about anything.
Wait, what the fuck? I was semi-joking. Roiland needs a fucking therapist.
I mean that kind of stuff is pure roiland, when he doesnt have a room of writers to keep him at bay. I take it you didn't see his netflix thing with psychicpebbles?
Oh, of course he did. It's time to admit cuck fetishes are 50% humiliation, 50% sublimated gay desire.
I knew Roiland was like that but for some reason it always takes me by surprise. I guess he thinks constantly making jokes about incest & molestation is somehow an adequate alternative to actually dealing with his trauma.
Trauma? Jesus Christ. Just because someone makes edgy jokes doesn't make it some big thing. Are you one of the ones who was kicking up a fuss about James Gunn too?
You know he's admitted to being molested by an older cousin when he was a kid, right?
>Man becomes rich
>Suddenly women want to date him
Yes? It's a much more common trait to do that in women than it is in men.
WELL HE ROPED ME INTO THIS
I thought Season 2 was the funniest. By Season 3 it had gotten too far up it's own ass for its own good, it was pointlessly dark and edgy, and it didn't really make me laugh. I'm sure on some level I was influenced by zeitgeist and that exaggerated it; by Season 3 R&M was something more people had heard about than had not and it stopped being a little thing people would talk about on smaller places and it became a little less Roiland and a little more Harmon. A lot of counterculture hate naturally came with that.
I liked the Pickle Rick episode though.
I'm concerned about Roiland using the same art style for everything he does. I feel like it's a mistake to do that because this art style will always be ingrained in "Rick and Morty" and everything after will just be considered a R&M rip-off.
I know it's just the way he draws, but maybe he should ask some of the artists on his animation teams to tweak designs or something.
