Ricky is pretentious and haughty which is the exact opposite of Karl, and that juxtaposition is great base for entertaining arguments
Stephen is the voice of reason that doesn't let neither Ricky nor Karl take it too far
Stephen's whole role is to go
>LET HIM FINISH RICKEEEEEEY
True, but he also tells Karl to elaborate on things when the subject gets too bizarre instead of shutting him off and laughing hysterically like Ricky does.
It's a vital role. Listening to Karl is the whole draw, Ricky is just an obnoxious cunt.
Not much. When Karl's stumbled into philosophical quandaries, that go over most people's heads, Ricky defaults to calling Karl an idiot.
Unsurprisingly, Ricky's newest stand-up routine is to complain that people can't handle jokes anymore. Which is the go-to of talent-less comedians.
I like how Karl occasionally stumbles into actual philosophical dilemma like qualia, and Ricky tries to shut him off while Stephen seems genuinely interested because Karl's actually getting somewhere deep even if he's wording it in an absolutely hilarious way
The more I go to college the more I realize I hate intellectuals. Karl isn't amazingly smart but he isn't really dumb either, he just isn't educated. He says a lot of thoughts that actually make sense given his world view. Intellectuals aren't smarter than anyone else, they just see the world differently and think they are so much better because of it. Fucking Hitler and Stalin were intellectuals. Often times the "average joe" is smarter than faggots like Rickey who think they are so smart because got taught to see the world a certain way.
I think a lot of people have, it's difficult to describe but things like "philosophical zombies" and stuff like it kept me up at night for years and I bet most people think about that shit to some degree.
Listening to their XFM show whilst playing some vidya is peak comfy.
Also where is the outrage over the fact that Stephen Merchant assaulted a mental defective on air, no less?

That is literally what i'm doing now
They make Karl funny. Karl is boring by himself.
I wish they had subtitles for that thing. I'm ESL and I can understand any american cartoon with no trouble, but throw a british accent and some words are completely inteligible to me.
Ricky's there to antagonize the others and goad them with japes.
Stephen moderates and ensures that the discussion keeps rolling.
Both offer their own stories and asides so that it isn't any one person's show/perspective.
I kind of like to see it as a formation of Freudian archetypes with Karl being a rather simplistic Id and Ricky being a real prick of an ego.
Stephen has some great anecdotes but Ricky's just there to provide infectious laughter
A show with just Stephen and Karl would be great. Ricky goes out of his way to the point of retardation to shit on Karl's hypotheticals. Granted when a Karl hypothetical is completely insane Ricky is a good addition, but Karl does bring up some fun ideas and its annoying when Ricky refuses to play along with it.
If they weren’t there, Karl would just sit silently in front of the microphone reading the paper or something for a half hour.
I find the best interactions with Ricky/Karl is when Ricky's goading and insults just makes Karl double down and get more fucking weird and off kilter with defending his viewpoint. Their whole bit with the mirrored wall in Karl's flat is a great example of this.
Why was "Mr. Dilkinton" so funny?
Literally antagonists
I loved when Karl BTFO Ricky with the light riddle and Ricky just totally refused to admit defeat.
Ricky keeps the action flowing by stirring the pot and being a straight man to Karl's babbling, Steve mostly sits there and acts like a pretentious twat.
