You know, I like Homestuck, but the writing of the epilogues made me realize something.
There's a difference between a character's creator writing the character, and someone who likes a character being paid to write about said character.
Dave, for instance. I'm sure everyone recalls the twitter post about that one fanfic writer or whatever being happy they're getting paid to write "real dave strider dialogue," but that's just it. It read like someone who really liked Dave, rather than Hussie writing Dave, not even going into the stereotypically fanfic-y way the entire romance debacle was written. Not even that they want Dave to be happy, just that it felt like someone who probably likes Dave a lot, rather than Hussie. Everything about the epilogues felt this way to me, with the exception of Jake, Jane, and Gamzee.
It feels weird to have slightly (more than zero) higher hopes for a game with no proof it even exists.

If I wanted to hear endless responses of "it's shit" and meta-shitposting about authors creators and shift blame I'd browse Yea Forums, or go back and read more epilogue reactions on Tumblr. Internal consistency is rare, precious, and fleeting, and also rarely discussed in comparison. That's one of the things I liked Homestuck for.
Homestuck gets a lot of undeserved hate, including from people in the fandom. I actually enjoyed the totality of the comic, including the Epilogues, and Hiveswap/Friendsim. I mean sure nothing's perfect and I personally prefer the classic Homestuck format (panels with occasinally flashes) but the rest is still good. It's expanding the Homestuck cosmology, which in itself is fascinating.
The comic gets the backslash from not only the bad reputation of its community but also people in the fandom that can't stand a mechanic or something that was introduced/only care about the characters and their relationships and get mad when shit happens to their characters. Really a waste desu. Homestuck deserves to be way more appreciated than it currently is.

That's actually a bit insightful, so there's no way Hussie thought of it. Although it does lean heavily on the emphasis on Bro being Abusive to Dave, so maybe he did actually come up with it. But it still feels to me like a coincidence.
But they exited 'canon'. The whole ending was the kids leaving the story. You can't have an epilogue without them being dragged back into 'canon'.
Besides, it's just one of many possible outcomes; it's called "dubiously canon" and separate from the Homestuck narrative for a reason. I literally don't see why everyone's throwing such a tantrum.

Funnily enough the people who were all over the epilogue have mostly moved on. It doesn't even have the staying power of actual homestuck where you could get hundreds of pieces of fanart out of a couple of pesterlogs. If anything it's driven people away.
Have you seen the end of Lord of the Rings, where Frodo is too far gone from his experiences in the War of the Ring to enjoy his former leisurely lifestyle in the Shire? That's the sort of thing happening with the heroes. They were given a world that worships them and nothing to strive for, so they cling to whatever they desired most and long for what they lost.
Also, Dirk's Ultimate Self includes all his soul shards across all realities, meaning Doc Scratch, Lord English, Equius, Bro, Gamzee, and Caliborn are all a part of him now. He became a heel to give the story a reason to continue, so that the reactive heroes might still have metaphorical life left to live. In Dirk's eyes, once a story is over all the characters within it die for good, and he wants to live forever.
Hussie is a lot more insightful and intelligent than shipperfags tell you. I'm re-reading homestuck and nuts deep in act 6 and I'm adoring how everything falls together like a bunch of unrelated fucking garbage somehow looking like a roman statue once it's all finished being tossed on the ground. Shit that seemed irrelevant in the beginning turned out to be extremely important, multiple mobious double-reach-arounds and so on. One thing I don't appreciate however, is how everything seems to be pre-determined and everyone in the story just feels obligated to go through the motions because the universe already decided that's what would happen. It really takes any tension out of things.

This. It's also perfect in how it's constructed as if the detective pony book was a massive foreshadowing. It's extremely in character for Dirk to become some manipulative piece of shit once he has all those malevolent parts of him taking control.
In fact, there's so much pointing toward Dirk possibly becoming a villain that I'm surprised now that it didn't happen in the main story.
Because "it's all miserable" doesn't have any staying power. Hussie's pretentious, and the most pretentious part of the whole thing was that thinking he can get away with acting like the fun, trolling author when he's done a lot of actually godawful shit now and lost most of the faith people had in it.
That was Dirk's eventual plan, and both ends say that was the end of John as the protagonist and plot driver, but that doesn't necessarily mean the end of the story. It just means John won't be the viewpoint protagonist anymore. Likely that would be Terezi, who he passed down his Arcana role as "The Fool" to.
I like the idea of Dirk turning heel after struggling with the fact that's got some weird predetermined natural tendencies toward being a manipulative ass and generally kinda evil, but I wish it was done in a way that didn't feel like a crap copout sequel fanfic novelization that's so probably noncanon that the site itself feels the need to call the epilogues "tales of dubious canonicity."

Yeah, predestination really affects the intrigue of what'll happen to characters. Like in Act 5 Act 2, right off the bat we see John at the very end of the Act, so when he dies to go God Tier, the thought isn't "oh shit John is dead,", it's "oh dammit it's another doomed timeline," since they already pulled it in Act 4 (Then it happens again with less impact when Jack ganks him on the Battlefield, to the extent that Doc Scratch even mocks the reader about it). Additionally, the very next page, it happens with future Karkat and Terezi chiming in at the end of the memo, far enough down the timeline that they're certainly going to make it through the act.
I'll admit, this can be explained by the idea that main characters of a story should usually be expected to survive most of the way through, and it's a big subversion to kill them earlier, but still. And Homestuck (and Problem Sleuth, for that matter) always had that aspect of a puzzle, where you have a few pieces in place, and you're pretty sure what the big picture will generally look like, but the fun's in the journey, in the process of putting it together.
But overall, things can be shown as predestined, and even if you don't break causality and follow that fate, you have to be careful about what you show already happening.

IIRC, Lexxy basically co-designed God Tier Jade, and she wanted to give her a tail, and Hussie didn't want her to have one but gave his blessing to fanartists who wanted to give her one anyway.
Felt like a big pander to that side of the fandom, especially so late in the story with no time to build it up. The three years was already hard on character development, being mostly tell instead of show, and then the retcon compressing it even further just made it feel tacked on. The epilogue tries to build it up a bit, and honestly makes it work better than the main story did, which isn't really much of an accomplishment.

I grew up reading MegaTokyo I still read it, how the hell is it still updating so leetspeak is easy to read. The most frustrating to read at times is Karkat's, because his giant grey text blocks tend to blend together.
