Why does the character design now look like Hilda?

I've been getting this feeling lately, sometime around 2010 or 2012, that a lot of modern showrunners are trying to capture that one favorite show of theirs that they were obsessed with growing up. Like, Regular Show has some Mighty Boosh feeling. Star Vs feels like it's trying to ape a specific magical girl anime, Steven Universe wants to be nostalgic about this or that.

None of these shows are succeeding. They're so flatly animated, the voice acting tends to suck, and the writing is so primitive that it feels more like a bad knock-off than it does a love letter. And to use Infinity Train as an example, it feels like it's TRYING to capture that "feeling" of 80's dark adventure. The same kind of feeling that Stranger Things S1 succeeded at capturing. That season actually made me feel like I was watching a love letter to stuff like The Goonies while this trailer makes me feel like I'm watching someone who thinks "If I make the music techno, it'll totally be like the 80's".

I wish I could explain it better. Gravity Falls is one of the few that actually takes it's X-Files/Twin Peaks inspiration and runs with it.

SU was trying to hit a checklist of things that people are nostalgic for. With no real nostalgia behind the motivation. OK K.O is doing the same, unsurprisingly.

I'm pretty sure i only one user said that in the last thread but i don't disagree. I feel like her being a book worm who reads a lot of mystery novels make the most sense. Maybe they can retcon the trailer by implying that Tulip changes hobbies rapidly in some sort of self discovery teenage manner, and she just happened to be going through a "i wanna be a coder" phase and that reading is her only concrete interest. When i was a teenager i was picking up random hobbies all the time, coding, locking picking, learning instruments and languages; it doesn't seem that far fetched.

I think they want to make her a programmer, and game programmer is cooler than working on a boring corporate Thing.

Mao Mao and Amphibia are showing to be okay, though both shows are pretty early in their run so who knows.
I feel like Mao Mao would immediately get better if he and his crew left the village and actually explored the world.
Owl House and Infinity Train aren't even out yet, but don't seem to promising.
Again, who knows how that'll be.
That, and a lot of the shows that -are- airing now are just painfully, painfully average.

The character designs and personalities are just so annoying to me.
If 2012tnmt didn't spiral into a shit slurry towards the end it would've been the pinnacle of animated tmnt.
It had great humor, fantastic villain designs, and wasn't afraid to be a little mature every once in a while.
From what I've seen the new one is very episodic, is there any significant plot yet?

AT suffered of bad structuring and lack of focus, you lost interest because there was story to tell, and it was made worse once they started focusing on drama instead of adventuring

SU's heart is in the right place, but the staff and writers in conjuction with terrible management drags the show's quality down. I see it more as wasted potential, but given that it's the first cartoon the creator worked on I can give a pass on their mistakes.

Gumball relies too heavily on their visual uniqueness that they stopped trying to write compelling scenarios, most of the recent season's episodes have just been at best showcases for a new visual gag and idea and they use trendy subjects to ground it, which can backfire with ease.

Can you blame me? Alex's girlfriend is the creator of one of the three shows listed. She hasn't got a creative bone in her body and we saw that when she was involved with Nu-DuckTales. Infinity Train was pushed by Gravity Falls fans and youtubers that did Gravity Falls speculation videos. Amphibia is honestly the most unique of the bunch, yet it's still finding its own feet. Gravity Falls is the kid in class that others are copying notes from.

Man you can tell these guys were having so much fun.
I haven't actually sat down and watched the network on TV itself in years, but I doubt they do anything like this anymore.
I feel like they'd think it's a waste of time and money.

DESU there doesn't look like theres too much work in making it run, the intro is less lavish than the Cartoon Fridays one. Having a character host for the whole night was so cool. I guess they'd have to record a bunch of voice lines but theres probably a few you can re-use to cut down production.

The trailer revealed too much in my opinion and lacked the intrigue garnered by the initial pilot and is counter intuitive to the mystery genre. Honestly i would have been more hyped if what was behind the keyboard a more abstract trailer that showed very little about the show. It would have generated a lot more discussion and excitement. Something like a cryptic choppy trailer that is viewed as if one were looking at a moving train whilst themselves are stationary and the information was being shown through the moving train windows would have been pretty neat.

Rough Draft gives you exactly what your storyboard asks for. They don't have time to fix your shitty storyboards. So, when crewniverse did shoddy work, they got a shoddy product. The reason ballet is considered "high art" is because it's so hard to perform. Not because it relates to people.

The reason people admire The Sistine Chapel is because it took a shit ton of effort to make, not because it relates to them (especially considering that it's wholly religious yet religion is almost never mentioned when praising it, because the work put into it is more important).
And even here, when talking about hand-drawn 2D animation, people often emphasize on how much effort it must've taken to draw every frame, not on how it relates to them or something.

But even if we're going by his own criteria, the measurement of what can be considered peak 2D animation has been reached by many people for about a century now since 2D animation started as an art form. And Infinity Train sure as fuck is not evidence of high technical artistic ability.

Just because it took years to make does not mean that time was being used well or that the time reflects the quality. If I put on a ballet show, spend a year practicing, but still can't do a split by the time of the performance, that doesn't mean I'm, by default, to be respected because I spent a year working.

Calartists need to be fired. Bring in real artists who want to create good shit that will start up a new good generation of animation. Not this SU, Adventure Time, Same Calarts shit.

I honestly like the og pilot of infinity train a lot more than the new one. It could be very good, but seeing the shit that Owen Dennis says, I'm kind of on the fence. Owl House could be pretty good if the writers are competent.

This is where you get it way wrong. New creators hire their friends because they're trying to make the best show ever and hiring their trusted, talented friends feels safer than hiring a bunch of mercenary randos they don't know anything about. Then after the first season, the creator has learned a bit about what making a show really entails and they end up having to fire a bunch of their friends who aren't the right fit and try something new. It's just a learning curve. Animation is an extremely competitive business- no one, especially not show creators whose names are on the line, and who had to be extremely dedicated and ambitious to get where they are, is there to have a fun time at the expense of the product. You wouldn't last a month if you acted that way.

Why not? The build-up of every single cartoon being rebooted in that style was already hitting it's apex. Roar was just the straw that broke the camel's back. Audiences and consumers need to push back against industries if they're sick of the products being put out. Pushback and competition is healthy for creative fields.

The only wrong thing was personally going after manbun to the point where he had to put his Twitter on private. But going after Roar was going after Warner Brothers who, at the point, gave zero shits about their reboots (Flash animated Tom and Jerry, shitty Willy Wonka cashgrab, Be Cool Scooby Doo, TTG). They deserved the backlash.

Thundercats Roar became such a hate sink because it was a perfect storm of shitty - it managed to have literally everything people hated about modern reboots of old cartoons (derailed characterization, ignored lore, lazy cookie-cutter animation, meme gags, etc.), offered absolutely nothing positive in return, and the director looked like a walking embodiment of clueless arts graduate stereotypes.
