I'm writing an essay on Catholicism and Superheroes and I just realized I haven't read any Daredevil. What are the best storylines and arcs related to Daredevil and the Church?
I'm writing an essay on Catholicism and Superheroes and I just realized I haven't read any Daredevil...
Basically all of Frank Miller's run(s), since he's the one who took Matt's Catholicism (which up to that point had only been mentioned in passing since he's Irish-American) and made it an integral part of his character. Kevin Smith's Guardian Devil also makes pretty heavy use of it, though whether or not it's actually done well is another question.
Miller and Bendis did the best material. And like Said, Kevin Smith's run emphasized the Catholicism angle.
Is Decalogue any good? That's the one i'm interested in.
Yeah, that’s part of Bendis run, which is excellent
Not Daredevil, but Superman: For Tomorrow will probably supply you with some material for your paper. It involves Superman in a confessional relationship with a priest.
Isn't Superman meant to be a Methodist?
I think so. I believe the priest in For Tomorrow is Catholic however. I just can't think of too many superhero confessionals and that one came to mind. Maybe it will help, maybe it won't.
>I'm writing an essay on Catholicism and Superheroes
This sounds terrible and I say this as someone raised deeply religious who probably owns more comic books than you'll ever actually read.
Religion in comics is an incredibly interesting topic, but you're going to have an awfully shallow paper if you limit it to capes.
You should mention Frank Castle as a kind of anti-thesis to Superman and Daredevil
>I say this as someone raised deeply religious who probably owns more comic books than you'll ever actually read
epic
Dont forget it's a pretty big part of Nightcrawler too!
Eddie Brock too, though not as much as Matt and Kurt.
>Kevin Smith's Guardian Devil also makes pretty heavy use of it
Obviously, since it's a copy of Miller's Born Again.
I'd say Frank Miller's and Brian Micheal Bendis's run are the ones that mention Daredevil's Catholicism the most. Also Kevin Smith's Guardian Devil brings it up also but its been debated if it did it well or not. Also couldn't hurt to look into other catholic superheroes like Night-crawler or Venom.
Holy fucking shit yes. Bendis and Maleev made this book fucking fire. A lot of Bendis' traits as a writer are on full display but he manages to use them in an effective way. His ideas for stories by themselves are fairly solid and he generally has the ability to execute (Powers, Ultimate Spider-Man, Jinx). He sometimes decides to heavily lean on his artists for some issues and he has gotten fairly lucky with some of his teams (Bagley, Maleev, Immonen). Lastly, his wordiness is used to its fullest effect by providing much needed characterization when appropriate as well as just being able to deliver meaningful dialogs that actually deserve the speech bubbles they occupy.
Should i read it form the start or just read the frank miller run? After i finish it is it worth continuing?
Daredevil is easily one of the strongest ongoing cape comics currently coming out. Start with Miller if you want classic Daredevil. If you want to start with a modern crime drama, go with Smith, Bendis, & Brubaker. If you want something closer to mysticism and ninjas, read Diggle's run. If you're looking for a more over the top/colorful/ ridiculous version of the character go with Waid's run. The beauty of Daredevil is that he has a long running consistent history and multiple different start points that welcome new readers.
can't believe you'e lumping diggle's crap in with those great comics
I never said it was good, I just wanted to give perspective concerning the more "popular" runs rather than just the critically acclaimed.
Recommended that deals with Brock/Venom and his faith?
The very issue that shows him getting his costume, he's in a catholic church about to commit suicide. It's been a while but his runs touch on his catholicism here and there
Spectacular Spider-Man Vol. 1 - The Hunter comes to mind. It's a series that introduces the fact that Eddie has cancer and his relationship with the symbiote.
The religious themes aren't really used much in David Mack's Parts of a Hole (aside from one panel that iirc depicts Matt saying the Rosary), but it's pretty essential reading regardless. Arguably the best post-Miller Daredevil story.
Is there anything as blessed in comics as Daredevil Vol. 2 is?
