SO MANY EXPRESSIONS
every page has a gift on it
Frank is like the 90's style equivalent of Kevin Maguire.
That's a solid take, they both pay very close attention to faces and add a ton of characterization

Hello, Storyteller.
>well known comic artist
>early-mid work is fine
>recent stuff has collapsed into unintentional self parody
This is a thing that keeps happening.
this is a real style change from Choi/JSC
Hey OP.
What else do I know Arcudi from?
Jesus, did the police give Burn out LSD?
BPRD and Hellboy?
I think the recent announcement that Joe Mad! won't be finishing Battle Chasers is another good example.
A lot less breezy and high adventure so far, yeah.
and I remember reading some twitter comments about credit etc. for various things Arcudi did for the Hellboy mythos really not being forthcoming from Mignola/the recent movie, I want to say
For all of Frank's bad habits, I have an appreciation for him still. There aren't many artists these days who have such a distinctive style without often looking like lazy shit like Booth, Ramos, and JRJR. And it's a much better model for modern style than hacks like Hitch. But I understand why some people just don't like it.
Also he draws tights and bulges like fuckin' nobody's business, and old guys look like old guys. Love his JSA.
I like this face.
Also, has Gen 13 popped up in anything recent? Are they gonna show up in that new Wildstorm thing?
Yeah, him and a few others IIRC.
It was a whole shitwheel.
fucking lol
The Gen-12s/Team 7 showed up in a sort of "prequel" arc to set them up, but that's about it.
That's it. One of those memory blank brain fact situations.
And all the better for it. I give Frank shit, but this is leagues and leagues above Liefeldian trash.
Need we even mention Land?
Also, what exactly is Battle Chasers?
so how are you owls tonight?
The Mask
Major Bummer
Cute!
... This is the 90s though, so this WILL end in disaster. Poor Sarah.
I physically need Grunge to shut the fuck up.
d'awwwww
Battle Chasers is essentially Joe Mad's personal Final Fantasy story. It was one of the Cliffhanger subline books, but lasted like 9 issues before he got distracted and it went on hiatus until it got kickstarted as a videogame and he promised to finish the story to issue like, 14 as a stretch goal.
>Arcudi did for the Hellboy mythos really not being forthcoming from Mignola/the recent movie
What happened?
Fine. Having stupid hobbies is "fun".
You?
Sounds interesting. Weird, but interesting.
Fine, any recent comics that you guys are reading? I'm still sorting through my Dr. Fate recs.
Recovering from my cold! I'm onto the "mostly over it but still loaded up with mucus" stage.
Yeah, Grunge sure is a blathering idiot.
hows it going for y'all
recent comics are bad
I'm interested in the Jimmy book just for Lieber's comedy take
WELP
This "pattern fill layer" approach to Grunge's powers is not working for me.
Poppa Fairchild has completely lost his chill his the beach house got nuked.
Jimmy Olsen?
123rd and Amsterdam, "one of New York's more dangerous neighborhoods", even in 1999? no fucking way, lol.
yeah, 12 issue maxi
crazy how Frank reinvented himself as “serious”
Frank's art is not conducive to making Roxy as cute as she should be.
Grunge: truly too stupid to live
Ice Cream Man, Redneck, Snotgirl and Gideon Falls are the only comics in the past couple years to care about
Texas + no air conditioning = fucking hell
oh NO
no no no no
Is another sad, lonely nerd going to kidnap Caitlyn for breeding purposes?
it's kind of becoming a thing, isn't it
Genius really
Why is Jimmy Olsen getting a 12 issue maxiseries? I just now realized how stupid that is.
... Oh fucks sake, there is absolutely going to be an awful crossdressing joke.
Well, that last panel sure is exploitable.
Because Silver Age Jimmy is a goldmine of weird shit and if anyone can make it funny now it's Lieber
Jimmy Olsen had an ongoing that lasted like 20 years, and was part of the first run of Fourth World books.
It's also the source of a lot of the classic Silver Age Superdickery.
Also, Jimmy is probably the most famous superhero-adjacent character DC has, which offers all kinds of point of view possibilities in stories.
>
Gen13 should have a series before Jimmy Olsen does
go poke Warren Ellis, then
...at least it's not like what happened to Wendell, right?
I dunno, the only time crossdressing jokes are reliably funny are dependant on the character. It's either hypermasculine dude is an insecure douche, or the character is actually rockin' the look like a boss. Which, I mean in all fairness, Jimmy did look pretty good in a dress back in the day.
I love how they are completely nonplussed at Kat getting tossed out the damn window. Eh, she'll be fine!
DC is full of idiots, Ellis and his colander brain from alcoholism included
LOL
thanks for reading, back slightly late tomorrow
I mean you may as well ask why a bunch of third-rate Spider-Man villains got an ongoing that lasted over two years. Creative shit happens in the weirder books.
And come on man we can laugh at the absurdity of a scrawny, straight, white nerd who unironically wears a bowtie crossdressing against his consent without it being malicious towards actual crossdressers or trans people. Contrasting squares against alternative culture is funny and why Hank Hill lends himself so well to comedy.
Or you could do it like Morrison making Jimmy an ultra confident badass when crossdressing.
Thanks op have a good evening
No, not Grunge's girlfriend!
Thanks for running OP. See you tomorrow.
Thanks for posting as always, Storyteller.
I fucking want to hate this series, but I fucking can't. Especially now that the art no longer sucks. Cause like, by all objective standards, it's been competently put together pretty much since issue 1, and the characters are still likeable and going through tangible development. Every time we visit the 90s, we end up finding hidden-ish gems, but I wanted this one, I wanted just one shitty one to crack on. Fuck.
90's gets a bad rap because of the junk that flooded the shelve for sales purposes. You had a lot of really talented writers coming into the fold while wanting to do something a bit different with superheroes, which is why Wildstorm was such a big success.
I mean yeah, since most of the stuff was conceptualized by the Image cokeheads you start out with a lot of cringey EXTREME concepts, but they were smart enough to hire actual writers to expand on it, including Alan Fucking Moore, and they used the fresh setting to their advantage to do stuff other than "it's the Justice League/Avengers but edgy".
As we all know there was still a lot of people who wanked Watchmen and TDKR for the wrong reasons taking the wrong lessons from it, but you also had a ton of writers reacting against the British invasion folks (including actual Brits) to do stuff slightly more fantastic and lighthearted without going full Silver Age wank with it.
I'm looking forward to that
>... Oh fucks sake, there is absolutely going to be an awful crossdressing joke.
Jimmy's already married a multiversal Catwoman (he took her last name), and ruined a hotel room with Dexstar
>Which, I mean in all fairness, Jimmy did look pretty good in a dress back in the day.
and 1990s exercise clothing
Is Roxy aware of Hong Kong cinema enough to know that's somebody's actual name and not Grunge making a dumb fat joke?
For a hot second, I thought the girl was Jimmy. It's the kind of bullshit he'd get up to.
There's a previous page that I mistook Jimmy for Lana Lang before their names were mentioned.
Never liked Ice Cream Man.
Arcudi/Frank is the best and only good Gen13 run. I've never cared for Campbell or Jim Lee and certainly not "Brandon Choi". I liked the story where Grunge is transported into comic book land though but that's it and solely for fanservice reasons.
Arcudi/Frank > Lee/Choi/Campbell/Rio > Lobdell/Benes
Adam Warren’s is the best
I forgot about his run. He tried a middleground between Arcudi and Lobdell and also had the honor of nuking the characters. I'll put him on rank 2 but it was a very uneven run now that I think of it.
if you think about it, the only actual bad Gen13 run is Claremont's
Wasn't Dillon the guy with the Frank faces?
si
It's hard to believe that the guy who turned the mutants into a soup opera didn't wrote a good series about teenanges with superpowers.
Bump
What are Grunge powers?
Bitch.
Grunge is a friggin manlet and has a retard face.
Isn't Fagtion writing that Jimmy Olsen book?
Yeah, his run was complete dogshit.
my only frame of reference is his Gen13 so I think he sucks ass, old X-Men is boring
He can change his body depending on whatever he touches. He touches something metal, his body turns into iron for example. If he touches water, his body turns into water. Etc. Like Rogue, but with, uh, "elements" and he can control it.
