If we're honest what is in the show is a really watered down version of the irl cultures, specially when it comes to the concept of the Avatar itself and how is just a DBZ version of Buddha.

The irl cultures are the result of thousands of years of human migration, war, famine, climate, disaster, invention, religion etc etc.
The worldbuilding in Avatar is elegantly simplistic because it needs to be communicated quickly and effectively to an audience who are going to be quickly bored by bogging the story and characters beneath tons of exposition about DEEPEST LORE

I'm currently doing the Toph Slave route and it actually has better sex scenes in it, but I hate mind control so I won't be doing the other routes with it.
Between psychedelic Sokka and Punished Aang, Desert is one of the best episodes in the series. Also probably the best Avatar State scene.
