unironically this. already the monsters of Infinity Train are looking too sterile or too cartoony compared to V&V's more sci-fi inspired depiction of aztec gods and folklore creatures. plus IT is already pushing the promise of lore before release, which is never a good way to engage the audience, it has to be slow and natural.

Victor and Valentino clearly isn't trying to shove down its lore down our throats, it's slowly showing off the setting, mythos and characters but never strays far from its gag centric writing. Infinity Train on the other hand looks like it'll be a cavalcade of exposition with every new episode.

Yeah I'm not a fan of the really super detailed backgrounds with completely flat, unshaded characters in the foreground. They just look pasted on there. I can't put my finger on what specifically bothers me so much about it though.
OtGW had a similar overall style but that was much less jarring for some reason. I'm not sure what is so off-putting about this. This scene specifically was the worst, and it looked worse in motion than a still frame.

Hard to say, a big issue with GF is the hiatuses allowed for the fanbase to create theories and expectations that the show couldn't possible satisfy. Your best bet is to go in without any expectations. However, I will say that the show reaches its peak midway through S2. Also you're better off moving Roadside attraction to S1.

I don´t like that she´s actually excited about the train.
In the original pilot, she absolutely hated being there despite the fascinating things because she was trapped. That was something that made her very sympathetic, she was just a kid trapped in a horrible situation.
By making her excited by all the weird stuff, she becomes a generic protagonist that doesn´t seem different from any other show out there.
It´s a shame.

I find the keyboard to be fun. I think they are doing something more than just random keys - it seems to accompany you somehow.

I'm hyped as much as the next sperg but i'm not a fan of this trailer. For a show based on its mysteries it gave too much information without giving us much to speculate. The keyboard was far too easy to crack and the character revelations paired with the redesign has left me less excited about the show than before.

They just trigger my trypophobia.

I really like Amphibia, I´m looking forward to the plot, but each episode has nice structure.

well that was fucking disappointing. i was hyped when the pilot came out, only thing that i was really iffy on was some of the humour and i was a bit weary given owen's attitude, but i was pretty fucking invested overall especially since i have a huge fucking bias towards trains in weird settings[/spoilers]. unfortunately, this trailer makes it look super generic, i was expecting an eerie, yet fun mystery cartoon, but it just looks like another "WHOO ADVENTURE" show. maybe it'll get darker as it goes along, but even then the "darker" stuff doesn't look as interesting as i was hoping
the art style is throwing me the fuck off too, tulip's new design is a downgrade from her pilot one (mainly her head, face and the glasses, the new outfit is fine), the animation looks a lot more stiff. i really hate that the characters lack so much shading and overall have pretty poor colouring and palette choices, especially in comparison to those detailed backgrounds, the characters just look tacked on, it's outright distracting at times especially when it comes to the mood, like with the scene with that tentacle-cyborg thing. i still don't like tulip's VA and i'm not a fan that she's a "CODING GAMER GIRL" either, i was kind of hoping she was just going to be a bit of a general, shy nerd or something from what we saw of her in the pilot, but that's a more of a minor issue and i don't think it'll really impact the show that much other than the set-up, so it's whatever
i'll still give it a watch but most of my hype is gone

I think actually that's a really big part of it, the background in has pretty much no atmospheric perspective, even the trees and stuff in the background (not the super far background, but heading down that path) are the exact same colors as the ones close to the camera.
Compare that to or pic related and you can see there's much more effort into emphasizing depth in the the backgrounds in OtGW, through the use of shading, atmospheric perspective, etc.

Here's a quick shop of the still from to add more "fog"/atmospheric perspective, gave some shading to the characters (I used the quick and dirty transform selection/select difference so it looks bad but you get the idea), and desaturated things overall.

Not sure if it looks "better" but it looks a little more like OtGW. Personally I think it looks more tolerable than the original. I might have gone overboard with the fog though.

I really do not understand how you people don't realize why 90% of modern cartoons do not have shading on the characters unless it is a very specific scene that calls for it. I know it seems simple and easy on the surface but it just is not feasible - It adds another several hundred hours of work (probably more) to the entire process, which is further complicated by animation work being outsourced.

CHARACTER shading does add man hours, background shading doesn't. It all comes down to composition, my guess is that the background artist is either an amateur or lacks experience. or it was one of those shots where they didn't really plan out before or was one of the first ones. Judging the whole thing it gets a little better later on

Also, the only shit being outsourced is the line animation and inbetweens, which is the most time consuming, all the other things come down to the person in charge of compositing and putting everything together.

This is gonna sound like salty bullshit but I'm just gonna drop my 2 cents.
Owen is too stubborn to let himself learn and actually ask experienced people to help him. If his twitter rants and entitlement over fighting anons in his tumblr is any indication, he wants to make this cartoon only to prove himself and be the next Hirsch in some sort of way.
Skill wise, he's very lackluster, he didn't even design his own character, and if you judge by his body of work you can see that he doesn't have anything visually appealing in his craft. This lack of knowledge and experience in his craft in both ilustration and animation WILL undoubtfully drag down the quality of the work of the entire show since he's trying to take as much hand on it as possible without knowing in what visual direction to take it.

I'm with you on this.
Both the corgi and robot side characters aren't visually interesting at all.
The big Noh mask cybertentacle demon could be fucking great but the visual style renders it very poorly.

I could forgive the mediocre character design if the show's lighting had something to say. I feel it's a terribly huge missed oportunity to not use a distinct lighting style. Everything is lit in the same monotonous way like Adventure Time. Which doesn't fit a show that purposefully is trying to emulate a mystery show, and the specific scene that sells me the idea that they don't have a direction with this show is that the tentacle monster doesn't receive any dramatic lighting. It's bland bold daylight lighting. Add some darkness, give bold shadows in a single still shot, give me something to worry or feel menaced by. Adding an overlay green layer over the windows of a very visually bland train in the middle of nowhere is not gonna sell me the vibe of the show.

I'm going full autism, but I'm 100% sure this show is gonna fall short with its execution, lets just hope the writing and story saves it.

Even without shading on the characters, just turning down the saturation on them makes them fit in with the background much better I think. Since the lighting in that environment (and most of the clips from the trailer) would make everything a bit more muted anyway.
I also lessened the amount of fog in the background a bit.

I also thought the flat shading in the Owl House trailer brought the entire look of the show down, but I hope it ends up being enhanced with the months of production left.
Infinity Train I for some reason don't have the confidence that they'll end up fixing it
