I think people might have assumed Hirsch didn't want the diner ending because he wrote that epilogue comic where Pacifica got character closure and the story was very kind toward her.

From the looks of things, it sounded like Hirsch originally DID want the diner ending for Pacifica because he wanted her to suffer/learn more, but after the show was over, changed his mind about her character arc and gave her the nicer ending that he wrote for the comic. He also did that Mabel multiverse story in the comic that basically addressed what an awful, selfish person Mabel can be and made her apologize to Dipper for being so terrible. A lot of that comic felt like it was cleaning up the bad character work from season 2B.

The comics were really, genuinely good and a pleasant surprise after the mess that was most of 2B.

I appreciated them, both because they were good stories, but also because they showed that rather than doubling down on the mistakes, Hirsch recognized where he fucked up and actively tried to fix things even if it was in a post script.

Hardly rich by the end and absolutely not popular.

Meanwhile Gideon, who was a significant villain throughout the series that openly aided and abetted Bill and tried at numerous times to kill Dipper and the others, is not only forgiven but allowed to continue his relatively unpleasant ways.

I think the worst bit of bad story editing wasn't how they forget that they developed Pacifica's character. It was spending season 1 making it painfully clear that Mabel flirts with every boy she sees and is constantly hitting on guys, even doing a montage of that very subject... Then have an episode in season 2 where Mabel takes the moral authority to condemn Dipper for flirting with multiple girls.

At the end, Pacifica parents tell her they had to sell most of Pacifica ponies only able to keep one. So my Headcanon was she took the job for me pony upkeep. In a mountain town like Gravity Falls, a horse can be just as good as a car. Canonically Pacifica still has the tools to still have a good life.

I think what makes Mabel a bad character is the tone deafness of the writers. Mabel does something selfish and terrible, but every other character apologizes to HER as though they were in the wrong. Mabel does a thing in several preceding episodes, but then admonishes another character for doing that thing in a later episode without ever being called out on the hypocrisy.

The writers have to ignore the bad things Mabel does or have characters react to those things in an inorganic manner, all to keep her from being recognized within the narrative as at fault. THAT'S a bad character and that's very, VERY bad writing.

What's hilarious is that he wanted her to suffer because he saw her as a "rich white person" so they must be awful. He wanted a bad ending and didn't want her shipped with Dipper

With characters like Dipper or Bart Simpson you don't have to pull punches. You can show them getting punch, falling, drag them through the mud. Which makes their story or resolution more earned and satisfying.

With little sister there is hypocrisy, where they never just get straight up punch. Without getting dragged through the mud these characters story (like you pointed out) story feels contrived.

Pacifica is the only character who really appreciated Dipper and who also had a room to grow from being his (girl)friend. Wendy might have to former but not the latter.

Wendy never developed as a character, period. Hirsch wanted her to be the "Little Red Haired Girl" of the series, the unattainable perfect woman that Dipper could never have. So in having to keep her "perfect" and in that role, she never developed any flaws or had any arcs and was just a recurring plot device.

People talk about how good season 1 is (compared to season 2), but really, go back and rewatch it. 75% of the episodes are about Dipper scheming to get Wendy away from Robbie. The journals and the mystery and whatever get forgotten about completely for most of that season; it's almost entirely "HMMMM How am I gonna get Wendy to like me THIS week?" bullshit.

In one of her first episodes, she offhandedly mentions dating every guy in town and losing track of who she's currently dating and who she's broken up with. She even ignores calls from one of the guys she's dating at the time but doesn't care about anymore.

...Then later in the season, when she finds out Dipper and Robbie were fighting over her, she goes off on an "all men are pigs and only want one thing" kick and ditches them both. Then in season 2, she gives Mabel a similar speech during one of their only interactions in the series.

It was one of those tone deaf things similar to how the series wrote Mabel. Wendy does all the things that Dipper gets shit on for, but she's never admonished for them. She had to maintain a status as being "the dream girl" so even when she was doing things the series pointed out as being wrong, they deliberately ignored it being wrong when she did them.

There are some stuff that gets brought up only too be dropped just as fast

It was only in a comic released like 2 years after the show was over and most people don't know about. But it was written by Hirsch so it can be considered canon.

It's more that we are discussing about how this show we really liked had some pretty severe flaws. Immediately after the finale I was ready to give the show an 8/10. But now it's more of a 6, and most of those points come from the jokes, music, voice acting, and animation, while the writing and pacing turns to shit. It really is like the GoT-finale for me, except not THAT bad. It is particularly accurate since the directors cut the show short, and instead of giving the series the needed 10-11 seasons as was recommended, they settled for 8, in the same manner that Alex settled for 2.

I like Pacifica and Pacifica/Dipper but I agree with Alex that the version fandom worships and the ship they like are something they made up mostly, out of their personal fantasies. She was a cliche in most of her episodes, and not even a really funny take, leaving her with only part of two eps where she was more interesting or really interacted with Dipper, and those things were never followed up on in the show. The comic was very cute but not really enough to keep interest for years and years.

The only character in this series who felt fully fleshed out to me and not a humor or plot prop was really Stan. Lots of others had potential but it never happened really.

WTF kind of cartoons were you watching? Male friendships are far more prevalent in cartoons. Actual female friends are a new thing as a trend. Before they were mostly just this girl hanging around who was more of an acquaintance than a friend.

I'd sooner believe the opposite. Their knowledge of friendships with females is pitiful. Like a person's who only ever played with girls as a child and then never interacted with them again outside of romantic relationships. Regular Show was a case where the MC (Mordecai) not ending up with either of the love interests (Margaret and CJ) was a GOOD thing, because both of those love interests were awful, horrible, terrible characters who brought down every story they were in.

Margaret was shit, CJ was fine and the only problem with the relationship was Mordecai fucking himself up by overthinking and sperging out about Margaret. Him not ending up with either was good because Mordecai during the show is shit with relationships and becomes unbearable to watch.

Watch Season 1 and Season 2a only. Season 2b is where it goes to shit.

CJ went crazy over tiny shit and tried to kill Mordecai on several occasions. She was emotionally disturbed and physically abusive.

I only remember the one time in her first episode where she went crazy. When they met again, she got a handle on things (still had a temper, but I don't remember her lashing out at Mordecai violently like that first episode), When they started dating, and when Mordecai fucked everything up when Margaret came back, she would either chew him out or walk away.

Don't even pretend that Mordecai was doing CJ right when he kissed Margaret at that party or when he gave that cringe ass speech at the Muscle wedding and despite those things being worse than what he did in her first episode, they didn't end with CJ attacking him.

Only thing I liked about it was the one pic where Tyrone was crossdressing
