This is the one that gets me the most. On one hand it’s actually kind of surprising they didn’t keep Flash an all American Johnny Football white boy just to tear him down and call him toxic masculinity and ignore all of his good traits but on the other hand the guy they went with is such a rat little pip-squeak that it makes no sense for him to be a bully even if that’s part of the joke. It’s just weird and while there are certainly bratty rich kids like that he is not at all the same kind of bully character that Flash is supposed to be (physically intimidating, which is supposed to play off the fact that Pete is actually stronger even though he doesn’t appear at all that he would be which causes its own drama).

Well, Pete's in an illustrious school and Jock Flash has no place there, so another smart kid who's really a complete jack-ass using social status to humiliate him on the regular fits better with what they've established.
Also, this may be a sort-of response to the anti-bullying "trend" in modern schools. If Flash were to hit/shove/physically assault Peter *once* and got caught he could very well be expelled. Then no more Flash, no more conflict, no more interesting hardships in Peter's school life. Alternatively, Peter finally having enough of Jock Flash's bullshit and physically assaulting him gets *Peter* expelled instead which may over complicate his dilemmas in a movie setting which is already strapped for time (though that would certainly be an interesting take for a comic or show to run with...)

This is a movie universe, not a bi-monthly comic. It's not going to be around so long that every secondary and tertiary character develops a super-identity at least once.
He still fulfills the same role of a school antagonist who hates Peter and respects the hell out of Spiderman, which is always a nice dynamic to have around.

These are all good points and I don’t disagree with anything you said. However like this guy said the character really isn’t Flash anymore which goes back to the point that they should have just made a Miles movie instead of completely changing Peter’s cast. user, I don't agree with any of the changes that they've made for MCU Spider-Man but that's not confusing.
It's not the same character, at that point if you're going to change 75% of what makes the character who he is then just make a new one. That way no one that's a fan of Flash is going to have a problem.

This isn’t a movie about the demographics of New York, it’s about characters from fifty years ago. Just make Pete and his friends white and nearly all other kids at the school can be a multiethnic rainbow. You seem to have completely missed the point of making a film adaptation of classic characters- it’s to see those characters and tell their stories.

I feel like this is Sony's fault more than Marvel or the MCU for making an unwanted, unrelated Spider-series as the latter was ramping up. They tried to just capitalize on it, fucked up and then had to relent and let Marvel bring Spidey in after the midway point for the collective Infinity Stones arc, which--while enjoyable-- was not the best way to introduce Spiderman into the mix.
I have mixed feelings about them cribbing alot of stuff from Miles and taping it onto Peter, but... hell I don't fucking know. We got a much BETTER Miles out of it thanks to Spider-Verse so I feel that for all the flaws and re-takes, that was worth it.

New York wasn’t a white ethnostate in the 90s when the animated series was made and it wasn’t in 2002 when the first movie was made. But they still made the characters look like they were supposed to look.
Also this MJ doesn’t just look wrong, they completely altered the charachter to fit the actress. But I guess we are telling the stories of ethnicity of current New York and what it’s like for teenagers now and not stories about Spider-Man, maybe my priorities are out of whack and I’m expecting the wrong thing from a Spider-Man movie.

Nah. Even if they wanted to push the "intellectual rival" angle, they could've made Flash both a brilliant math student AND a star football player. That way you have a better foil/rival because then you have a character that looks like everything that Peter isn't and has him beat in every angle, even though the audience knows Peter could destroy him with a single hand. The joke always was that Flash was unknowingly bullying somebody much stronger than him.
Instead, even the "intellectual angle" didn't work because nuFlash wasn't smarter Peter, apparently only got into the a school with his dad's money, and no one seemed to like him. nuFlash was in every way somebody Peter could take down even without his spider powers.
