I recently watched The Dark Knight Returns and really enjoyed it, Its obviously the culmination of a series but despite semi-extensive googling I can't seem to find the prequels or whatever the predecessor was. What series or movies do I watch to lead up to a second viewing of Dark Knight Returns?

it's its own thing you don't need to read anything else leading into it. there are some sequels of questionable quality.

isnt it a sortt of standalone becasue its set when bruce is oldish and grey haired?

Is it? Because in it hes grieving about Dick Grayson's death which seems to be the reason he gives up batman. the only thing i got out of google is that Batman: Under the red hood is the movie where dick dies

No, thats the one where jason dies.
DKR is a standalone story in an alternate universe. If you're really desperate for some backstory there's the prequel DKR last crusade one-shot

Ok ty

There's no prequels, the original comic book story was supposed to be a possible future for Batman. It's a stand alone story.
Other Frank Miller works can be considered a prequel of sorts. Year One is set in the same continuity and was also adapted to animation.

Ive seen year one it was pretty cool, any recs for where to go from there?

How about you actually read some comics?

If you like Batman, try The Long Halloween.

>hurr durr if there is backstory then it must be a sequel!

Holy shit you’re a retard.

long halloween sucks and you have shit taste

There is no prequel you fucking Mongoloid, it’s a movie for the dark knight returns book. Are you that dense?

Do you even need to ask that question?

Batman year one
Blind Justice
City of Crime
Legends of the Dark Knight anthology
Batman black and white anthology
Batman adventures, Batman & Robin adventures, Gotham adventures
Dark Night Dark City
Arkham Asylum
Killing Joke
Mortal Clay
Strange apparitions

I've tried making a list for a friend who doesn't like the way comics never end and prefers to have a beginning and end, this is what I came up with in regards to Batman. Could be the type of thing you're looking for. Listed in chronological order.
>Batman Year One
>Catwoman Her Sisters Keeper
>Batman: The Man Who Laughs
>Catwoman: When in Rome
>Batman: The Long Halloween
>Batman: Dark Victory
>Robin: Year One
>Batgirl: Year One
>Batman: Arkham Asylum
>Batman: The Killing Joke
>The Dark Knight Returns: The Last Crusade
>The Dark Knight Returns
If you mean a very literal prequel to TDKR, then The Last Crusade is a direct prequel.

>What series or movies do I watch to lead up to a second viewing of Dark Knight Returns?
Since everyones being an asshole ITT allow me-
The Dark Knight Origins
The Dark Knight Starts Looking at Girls a Little Differently and Grows Hair in Funny Places
The Dark Knight Goes to College
The Dark Knight Takes a Gap Year
The Dark Knight Explores His Sexuality
The Dark Knight is For a Time Contented with an Office Job
The Dark Knight vs Seasonal Affective Disorder
The Dark Knight Barely Keeping it Together
The Dark Knight Has to Go "Dry Out" at a Facility in Florida

Why bait like this? Either you're a casual or are trying to shit on TDKR for not holding your hand. Either way it's just an odd flex.

Not him. Kill yourself.

TLH is fantastic and only Jim Lee fans and Hushfags disagree. It's by far the best introductory Batman story for casuals.

Morrisons entire run (minus Inc) should fit in there between Killing Joke and Last Crusade.

It really doesn't. There are too many inconsistencies like Damian Wayne being a thing that just doesn't fit in with the world of TDKR.

Batman Year One, All Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder, Batman vs. Spawn, Dark Knight The Last Crusade, DKR, DKSB, and DKtMR all take place in the same universe. Funny enough this also means the entirety of Spawn is canon to the Millerverse
