The first few eps have a ton of shitty tumblr humor, but it goes away after 6 eps or so. It's mostly driven by character relationships (and i don't mean "boyfriend/girlfriend", but rather "master/apprentice", "rivals", "unlikely allies"), and gets pretty heavy there, but there is also some underlying deep lore for the show to explore.
Give it a shot, it's not a long series.

I thought the hair was tentacles, and the only thing I could think of was that one scene in the Modifuckers.

It's alright. It's not your show if you want action, it's more character focused. The first half of season 1 is pretty lackluster as it's just introductions to the rest of the cast, but it does pick up and I think the writing is solid. If you end up liking the Horde at the end of season 1, watch season 2.

Not really. I watched it, and kinda wish I hadn't wasted the time. It's not "bad" per se, just... terribly, terribly mediocre.

The entire show exists solely for the purposes of autistic shipping bullshit; if you want to waifu one of the characters, you're better off just rolling over to Sadpanda or something and searching her name for the porn.

Ultimately it boils down to these writers having no real sense of "balance" in their narrative. Down time where we get to see characters interacting and engaging in hobbies is important and helps flesh them out in ways a constant barrage of action couldn't.

Some of my favorite cartoons are ones that manage to have plenty of action scenes paced out by endearing sol moments.

As with all things in writing however, moderation is key; without the SoL moments your story becomes nothing but a never ending stream of flashing images with no heart, emotional stakes, or reason to care, but without the action or real plot progression your story becomes a boring and meandering mess with no tangible stakes or reason to care.

And that's where these writers fail; instead of looking at an action oriented property and thinking "maybe I'll add a touch more SoL to make the characters feel more human" they think "maybe I'll just replace ALL the action with SoL"

It's just like the writers who think subversive automatically means good.

They want to write what they want and whatever title they're given they're gonna bend it into that type of story. It's one thing to give us downtime in, say, a Spiderman comic, it's another to make the downtime the focus because you're just not into that crime fighting stuff.

Besides Catra was the one that told her the princesses were never coming back, and she was right. The princesses faced one "death", of someone they never really interacted with until very recently, and immediately closed themselves off into their own castles. No one even cared to retrieve her body/remnants.

I can see how easily Hordak run roughshod over Etheria, the princesses couldn't even work together to protect each others kingdoms and shut themselves off from each other to the point that the Horde just took over individual kingdoms with ease.
