To be fair, Azzarello asked DC if they'd allow him to write Bruce Wayne as John Constantine's new gay lover. DC originally OK'd the decision, but then as Azzarello started to write the story arc they went back on the decision. This left Azzarello so enraged that he wrote a Bruce Wayne-expy in the most mean way possible and what was originally going to be a romance ended up becoming a truly love-hate BDSM mess of a... well. It became something, alright.
