Pretty sure Rich used a gun when he was younger (and in a New Warriors comic no less) but back then he didn't really shoot stuff IIRC and just flew around so it made some degree of sense. But now that he can do all sorts of shit it seems redundant.

I think in his older comics he would absorb energy and then shoot it out and that's pretty much the only time he would shoot things but he was mostly just a fly and crash into things type of guy, hence the human rocket.
