Better writing is subjective. It streamlines the story, ignores plotlines that some people might dislike but at the same time kind of sucks all the charm out of the characters and warps the characterization actually to the point of almost caricature. But the caricature is also more based on fandom headcanon than the show proper at the same time.
It's actually a good example of what RWBY would have looked like in the hands of a Japanese studio. More streamlined but devoid of personality.

I just started to watch this show 1 year ago and it was just OK. There were lot of problems but and wasted opportunity but it was just OK. Still I still dont get the hatedom of this fandom.
