Don’t get me wrong...

Don’t get me wrong, I like Tangled and Frozen but could someone yell me why these new Disney movies feel less magical and less of a fantasy than movies like Sleeping Beauty and Snow White? Is it because the new films are too self aware?

They can’t go too nuts otherwise China rejects it

>Is it because the new films are too self aware?
Yes, pretty much.

Why is that the case though? Is it just bad writing or do people like that?

The old movies are told more like fairy tale stories or ballet. The storylines are simpler, things just happen because they must and the characters don't have complex motivations and character arcs. Those things now can sour a person's opinion towards a film but since the older films are well, older, and considered classics people are more willing to be open minded towards them and appreciate them as very traditional, archetypal stories. If you ever had a parent sit down at your bedside and come up with a bed time story on the spot it probably had more in common with those older Disney films than the newer ones.

I hate both.

Tangled is good.

Because you’ve grown up

Compare this with any Disney movie in the last 20 years.

The prince acts like a creep, much more so than in Snow White.

Go dilate

Wow. Disney movies have gotten a lot better.

They are too self aware and they pander too hard to the adult audience.

Corporate disney

>Is it because the new films are too self aware?
Yes, well part of it.
Them being self aware is a symptom of audiences (read mostly western adults) have gotten like really bad with thinking they're "too smart for this" when it comes to fantasy stuff, see shit like Cinemasins, countless ""theories"" trying to make kids stuff darker for no real reason, weebs growing up with ""deconstruction"" shows like Eva but not actually understand what the ""deconstruction"" was, and you get an audience of nitpicky asswipes that think they know movie critique.
(as an aside, I also just wanna blame shit like Doug Walker, who alone has done more damage than most have realized)

And then there was Shrek, Shrek is a big fuck you from Kassenberg to Disney, and it was a massive success, so Disney took note and aped it, hard.

So now in an effort to seem "beyond their old simple days" they ironically make their movies worse by focusing more on lampshading "typical Disney things" instead of just making a good fucking movie.

a great example of this is the useless live action remake of Beauty and the Beast, Lindsay Ellis did a great video on it but tldr; everything it added was fucking terrible, and attempts to "fix" the original film makes the story just worse.

That and Disney now is just about money, which okay they always have been, but Iger doesn't actually care about movies, he want franchises, he want to make money and it hampers all production.

It's a fucking mess and won't change as long as Iger is around, the shitty attitudes about movies are still around and there's money to "make fun of disney tropes"

basically, people find the fairytales 'outdated', so they make self aware fanatsies for the modern millenial audience.

Guys, can't you read? He said
>yell me why
YOU NEED TO SPEAK UP!

Don't care, with each new movie we get closer to the perfect waifu

we've moved further away ever since Tangled

Unironically this

>yell me why
Fuck someone pls make some vocaroos

basically this

Not gonna lie. Older disney movie had me set up for expectations, that a handsome prince would one day show up and sweep me off my feet as a kid.
Why real life so disappointing.

>too self aware
I don’t understand this complaint, at least not in regards to Tangled. The movie has some snark and quips but overall it’s earnest as fuck

Heh.

When you become a bitter and jaded adult, everything seems ironic

But now I'm curios?
If a animated movie were to be made today, but in the old fashioned way of story telling, would it even sell?
I'd personally would love to see this happen. But I don't know if a new movie like this could ever survive in today's climate.
One thing I'm really tired of tho and wish movies and cartoon shows would stop doing is constantly referencing other shows/anime or celebrities and breaking the forth wall. If it's a comedy show, sure, I will give them that, otherwise, stop, enough.

It's idealism, an escape from reality. It's not trying to set up an expectation. It's trying to get you out of your dull, lifeless, melancholy life. That's what the company was built on. It was unique. But now, they're going into realism like everyone else. I don't like it. Real life is tiring enough.

>It's an escape from reality. It's not trying to set up an expectation
Okay, touche.
>Real life is tiring enough
God, don't remind me.

Tangled is perfect
Frozen and Moana are shit

i liked moana. you are right about frozen though

Moana was pretty alright. ''You're welcome'' is a fun song, and that crab guy was fun as well

Frozen is just bootleg Tangled
>Okay, Rapunzel is a good princess. Let's have two of them, each more annoying and stupid than the other. They should sell toys too
>Okay, her mother was a good villian. Let's do that ''the villian is someone she loves'' thing, but with a guy she met in the first day. Yeah, they'll never see it coming
>Okay, Maximus was a good character. Let's have a much more obnoxious version of him next time, but as a reindeer
>Okay, Pascal was a great comedic relief. Let's have a much more retarded version of him next time, to appeal little babies

I blame CGI

Moana was fine
