Why were teenagers and manbabies on the internet so obsessed with this man in the early 2000s?
Why were teenagers and manbabies on the internet so obsessed with this man in the early 2000s?
Because they were idiots who loved lolsorandum humor and edgy shit. A lot of them mostly hung out at Hot Topic and you can see that kind of additude in early Toonzone posts, particulary the forum dedicated to Nicktoons, to the point where there were threads dedicated to shitting on K-C and praising Invader Zim.
(Also, a riffing group that normally made fun of horse show fanfics ran two Zim fics made during 2002. They were, to safely put it, horrible.)
The stuff that invader zim got away with is quite frankly amazing.
Every teenager goes through their edgy phase where they're obsessed with at least one of the following:
>Real crime stories
>Dark, gorey anime
>Dark cartoons
>Horror movies
>Scary video games
>Browsing Nightmare Fuel on TVTropes
>Reading SCP everyday
You're a fucking liar if you say you weren't hooked on at least one edgy bullshit just because it was "wow so dark, I've never seen something like this before".
Why are you so obsessed NOW
Real talk.
Jhonen seems like he would be a pretty nice dude to be around if you was just an average dude and not a fan of his work
I still kinda am, but I'm at least self-aware of it now.
Wasn't he an asshole back in the day? It's probably just old forum gossip but from what I've heard he was really spergy when working on Zim, and after the cancellation he was really bitter about everything and was rude to fans who just discovered the show via the internet
>middle school - early highschool me
>trying to figure out how to talk to girls and maybe get them to touch my penis
>discover that if I say Invader Zim and JTHM are funny that the weird quirky girls will open up a little and talk to me
They still wouldn't touch my dick until I was 17 and had gone through a growth spurt and my skin started to clear up a bit though
Where's "looking up occult """real""" black magic spells on the internet and using them to curse people that bullied you?"
Just me? I mean, I never did that haha.
I just figured that was a 90's thing that died out when creepypasta exploded.
I dunno, there's websites for everything and in my experience kids are pretty superstitious about evil magic and shit because they're idiots that don't know any better. Or maybe they aren't anymore and I'm dating myself.
This x1000. Teen me in 2005/6 found out about JTHM at the most ripe age, it literally couldn't have been any more my jam. Cue a plethora of goth and edgy obsessions for the next 3/4yrs before I finally gained some semblance of self-awareness
Seems like just an online persona he's intentionally built to subvert people, every interview with him makes him out to be a really nice dude
Some people who worked on the show said he was a pain to work with. In particular the director, Steve Ressel, was pretty good-natured & forgiving about Jhonen but still said that he had a self-absorbed approach about the show & its concepts.
Supposedly his "my way or the high way" attitude of butting heads with the network is why they lost patience and pulled the plug without even finishing Season 2.
>just an online persona he's intentionally built to subvert people
Why would he do that? It's far simpler to assume he was really frustrated at first but then mellowed with age, the way 99% of people would.
Invader Zim was something new & different, it looked cool, and it was entertaining. When you have a good thing, it attracts legions of idiot fans in addition to normal decent people.
You don't need a roadmap here.
So is that Zim film confirmed still birth or what? Sorry for requesting a spoonfeeding but I don't want to read through a million click bait articles or go through a wall of retweets just to find one 10 word update about the movie
Yeah, girls especially go through a teen witch phase. But I'm a guy and went through a witch phase, a werewolf phase, a vampire phase, and a short-lived ghost phase.
i mean, i had a gore blog, but it wasn't because it was edgy. i just thought it looked pretty.
Sure. Sure.
Sad to say I never grew up from gorey ps2 games like manhunt, edgy cartoons/animu like evangelion and zim or dumb flash cartoons
You forgot WWII and war in general.
I legitimately still believe JTHM is a good comic.
Are there any blogs for 2006 era invader zim high school clique aesthetics
Does serial killer trivia count as real crime stories?
Also, you forgot real death footage.
Violence and random humor.
My b&w funny book of choice was Milk & Cheese. Evan Dorkin is still my gold standard for comedy.
Why is studying history edgy?
Studying history isn’t. Anybody obsessed with war and thinking all the violence that comes with it is cool, that’s being edgy.
>You're a fucking liar if you say you weren't hooked on at least one edgy bullshit
It was creepypasta's for me
Soon, I… I mean the alien storm-mind known as Jhonen Vasquez was working in animation as creator of INVADER ZIM.
And then… everything went to hell.
Okay, nothing went to hell. I was just trying to sound like one of those shows about celebrities who live shitty lives, but the fact is, things are alright, and I live the life many artists dream of, only it’s not my dream in particular, so as I draw my monsters, write my stories and parade around with all those supermodels that drop their pants at the sight of a guy who rants about how awesome it would be if this one monster were pitted against a bear, as I do these things, I stare out the window dreaming of what things would have been like if I had just stuck with the triangle lessons.
edgy cringe
It’s hitting Netflix within the next month or two
How was my explaination "edgy cringe"?
The overwhelming desire to rebel and not fit in for reasons.
More specifically good timing in 'popular' culture.
whats K-C?
he's still an asshole was an asshole before getting hired onto nick, he's calmed down substantially with age though.
>manbabies
>not women in their late teens and early 20s
Jhonen is kinda nice now. He used to be insufferable past the casual stage.
Klasky-Csupo, the creators of Rugrats and As Told By Ginger.
They were massively hated back in the early 2000s because of their artstyle and scriptwriting, even though the latter had great scripts backing it up.
>look, mom, i mass-replied!
It was a Generation X thing
They were all about being edgy af but there wasn't really anything to be mad about pre-9/11 so they just listened to a lot of NIN and Radiohead
I am in my late 30s and still pretty into most of those. I should just end myself, but that would be even more of a fucking lame teenage edgelord thing to do.
Squee is an underrated and forgotten gem.
Most of this stuff is still cool. You guys are just cowards who accepted being bullied out of your interests by other losers on the internet.
Well, duh. That's the point of the thread.
Because they related to him and seemed like someone they knew in highschool.
I still have notebooks full of demon binding glyphs to unleash on my enemies.
God I was pathetic
No that's I Feel Sick.
Steve Ressel was also the one who started the rumor that 'Jhonen Hates His Fans'. He was the one responsible for leaking all those character designs to that one website called 'Room with a Moose' and did a whole plethora of others things to the point the OG crew doesn't acknowledge he ever existed. There's a reason why he is never with the crew and did the commentary on the DVDs by himself or he is never with the crew at cons.
>literally misses the point of the thread
LOOK, MA, SUMMER IS HERE!
There were plenty of guys into Zim too. Can confirm since I'm a guy and I was a huge tist into Zim and I annoyed Jhonen via email/IM constantly talking about horror movies and anime. The LOLRANDOMGIREATWAFFLELS quirky high school girl cliques really kicked off about four or five years after the show's cancellation.
I bounced off SCP quick after I realized it was just a circlejerk for a handful of “staff”. Is it better now?
No. You can’t even publish a new SCP without presenting it to their discord and sucking off the right admins and crosslinking their pet pages in yours.
>real crime stories
Isn’t that super popular with women today?
For some reason chicks obsess over edgelord stuff, I've seen hundreds who waifu serial killers like Ted Bundy, hell, I've seen chicks who are obsessed with the Columbine shooters.
Never quite understood it.
>Dark, gorey anime
>Horror movies
I still love both of these at least all those gorey old OVAs.
Being stalked, raped, and the target of most serial killers is heavily ingrained in most women. "Don't walk around late at night alone." "Tell people where you are if you do." "Carry something to protect yourself like a whistle". These are rules women grow up with more than men.
Some women get a little adrenaline over that fear and like to indulge in it in a harmless fantasy sort of way. It's why a lot of ladies enjoy, I guess I'll just call it "fake pain", during sex. Such as your hands around their neck, but not really choking. Pulling their hair, but not hard. Grabbing their legs aggressively, but not actually refusing to let them go.
It's the same mental logic as when people get really interested in being scared, which is why they'll play jumpscare games at night. What other reason would a person have to play P.T. or Five Night's At Freddy's? Those games aren't fucking fun, people just enjoy the adrenaline rush of fear.
There's a difference between being edgy and just having macabre tastes. That difference is maturity and self-awareness. Edgy kids thinks it makes them more mature and special, but adults just see it as an interest like any other.
You can find plenty of men into that. Ghoulish stuff like that is gender neutral.
Do you like waffles?
And that’s terrible.
>browsing Nightmare Fuel on TVTropes
>reading SCP everyday
Guilty.
>Browsing Nightmare Fuel on TVTropes
Ages ago, when I first discovered that page, I read one of the entries about Oglaf which I had never heard of before. It was about a comic where a man turns girls into stone everytime he cums into them and after reading the comic, all it did was give me a new fetish.
Did he ever answer you or just blocked you?
Eh I liked JTHM but I could never get into Invader Zim. Re-reading JTHM again it doesn't hold up well but it still has a few stuff that makes me laugh.
Why were teenagers obsessed with Odd Future/Tyler the Creator, Supreme shirts and hanging out in Zumiez in the early 2010s?
>Dark, gorey anime
check
>Dark cartoons
check
>Horror movies
and check
I wasn't into any of that, I just like metal, mostly power metal tho
If I were capable of being bullied away from my interests I wouldn't still be watching anime and cartoons in general. That stuff is just fucking lame and designed to appeal to teens with its shock value. After the novelty wears off there's basically nothing to hold you to it.
I used to have his social security number because it was funny to me to have his social security number. I realize now that I was just retarded.
If I had his fanbase I'd be an asshole to them too.
Why did you have Social Security Number?
>because it was funny to me to have his social security number
Out of morbid curiosity how did you get it? And did you try stealing his identity?
I had access to a database that had phone numbers and other personal information, so I started looking up every "famous" name I could think of hoping that I could get famous peoples' phone numbers and his was the only one that I found. I didn't try stealing his identity or anything like that; I simply wrote it down and kept it, but I eventually realized how dumb I was and burned it.
It wasn’t because I was edgy it was because [EDGY OPINIONS]
Yep, a tubby Mexican ganglord being cut open like a ripe melon is as purty as a spring tulip.
Who ? I"m not kidding or bieng ironic, who is that ?
No regret,it was fun
