This is pretty much what Hickman was building upon anyway, not exactly the "alien cult" thing but as a very old cult that was started by Da Vinci, and Hydra members were unknowingly following this tradition as it passed down from generation to generation.
What they did in AoS was pretty clever all in all, specially now that they're building upon the mythos behind the Monoliths, long assumed to be just Inhuman tech.

I'm not a big fan of what Hickman did, but there's pretty huge differences.

Hickman: There's an ancient Secret Society that's had all sorts of secret adventures, and it was joined by many of history's greatest geniuses and adventurers. At some point a branch was perverted into wanting to more explicitly rule the world.

AoS: You know how we said we weren't Nazis, and claimed that Hydra had evolved into an organization of people wanting to control the world? SURPRISE! This whole time we've actually been a secret society devoted to serving this one alien dude that really didn't offer much in the way of benefits.
