It tried to have Deepest Lore and political commentary, and didn't handle them properly. Both of those things can be done well, but SVtFoE didn't.

Even from early concepts of the show like Star being a normal kid with a wild imagination, the show was never intitionally intended to be anything more than fast paced memery. But with the success of 2deep4u lore shows like Gravity Falls and SU and big fandoms moving on to Star they felt obligated to add shit that was never intended to be there just for the fans.

also a pretty big crew overhaul between seasons: the guys who completely rewrote the season 1 eps Mewberty, Blood Moon Ball, Mewnipendence Day, and Storm the Castle got promoted to head directors
