Stalyan's betrayal is quite predictable because she is always a thief and just made a deal with Raps to find the gem. At least Stalyan has intention to become a good person after reading Raps letter to her.

It's still a question that what motivated Cass' betrayal. I still don't think Cass has any intention to be a bad guy just because the burned hand unless she's brainwashed. Maybe something happened in the door of shell house changed her mind to let her believe grabbing the moonstone is the only choice for her and it's good for everyone.

This leads to an interesting question: what's Rapunzel's main flaw as a character?

Obviously, her biggest PROBLEM as a character has to do with her closest friends and allies choosing to stab her in the back. But a character's biggest problem always flows from their biggest flaw. So what's Rapunzel's biggest flaw as a character? What's her Achilles heel?

For my part, I think her biggest flaw is arrogance. I think that after what happened in the movie she's become convinced that everything is always going to turn out for the best in her life. She got a typical Disney princess ending after the events of the movie, and so this has led to an inappropriate level of confidence that things will go just as well elsewhere in her life, no matter what she does. This leads to her not being as meticulous and careful about details as she probably should be when she deals with certain characters, like Varian or Stalyan. And she completely misses all the signs that Cassandra was drifting away from her. Because she thinks that she's going to get a happily ever after, no matter what.

I think I'd chalk up her thirst for freedom/fear of losing it

Rapunzel's 3 (well, 2 so far) christmas ghosts challenge her autonomy. She wants to be free as much as anything, perhaps more even than (at present) to be wit Eugene. But she also fears consequences and the unknown, which are fundamental to living freely. The disciples show her the second edge of the sword. Sugarby tempts her with abdication of choice after she's hurt by the choices she made as queen tempore. Matthews offered a safe, perfect world where there would be no sudden attacks, no betrayals, no tragic injuries for the people she cares about. If Gothel winds up being the third then it even carries that "Mother" provided Rapunzel with absolute protection from the outside world, everything she needed and eternal safe haven from the bad of the world. And despite those being seemingly antithetical to her want for freedom, each time she comes close to accepting

Rapunzel wants, desperately needs freedom, but she's also facing the reality of what freedom entails. She could get hurt, those around her DO get hurt, and she'll never know what the future holds or if she can DO anything about it at all. The choices she makes blow up in her face or drive her friends away.

Embracing her "destiny" means coming to terms with the full breadth of freedom, not just the part that entails frolicking in meadows and seeing new places.

She's a person optimistic on everything and believes all will turn out to be good eventually. Sometimes her positive attitude works like how she changes Eugene & Stalyan but not it's not effective every time especially for born negative minded person (Varian, Cass, etc). So Raps has to take more lessons to adjust her thought on the real world and grow with better judgement.

This is interesting because Demanitus has said that her destiny is to embrace both the Sundrop and the Moonstone. So she has the power to both heal and preserve (with the Sundrop) and to destroy and ruin (with the Moonstone). This is ultimately her dichotomy in a nutshell. She can turtle in and stay in her comfortable little world, or she can go forward and plow through everything that stands in her path. And of course, growing up and becoming an adult means that she has to learn how to do both, because as an adult you're constantly faced with preserving what can be preserved, but also adapting to the world as it changes around you, as the circumstances you become used to grow old and decay.

And, on that note, who better to steal the Moonstone from her than Cassandra, the NEW character in her life, the main character who wasn't in the movie? Cassandra is like an embodiment of the Moonstone in that she represents change and growth for Rapunzel. She's the leaving behind of old things and the embracing of the new. She kills off the old so the new can flourish.

Cass has always hated playing second fiddle, she got a whole song about it. What better way for Zhan Tiri to bait her in to doing what he wants than appealing to that? Convince her she really is the hero of the story, trying to fight against an oppressive regime, that it's the destiny she's so often craved. And then after the rebels do some fucked shit or she realizes something else about them, she comes to her senses.

That's the point why Cass would break down if she discovers her true identity eventually. She seeks the glory and honor in her life time but she's actually serving the Kingdom which is responsible for her parents' lost/death. It's possible that both things could happen. Cass saw her tragic past and the catastrophic future of Raps grabbing moonstone. Cass lost her faith in Corona and she doesn't trust Raps' decision anymore, but she still cares Raps and tries to protect her in all cost.

What, just because she lives on an island? The film ends with her village returning to their seafaring roots, she could easily sail out for new adventures, plot, whatever.
