Kino is back on the menu boys!

>Think back, a few decades back, to the seminal story arc "Avengers: Under Siege." Once the siege on Avengers Mansion was over, it would have been nice if Earth's Mightiest Heroes got to kick back and unwind -- but in this new retelling, Loki is coming back! This September, the God of Mischief returns in AVENGERS: LOKI UNLEASHED! written by Roger Stern with art by Ron Lim. Both creators are legends in the realm of Avengers storytelling, and this time around, they'll be putting our heroes in a pretty dangerous position -- at the mercy of one of their original foes!

>AVENGERS: LOKI UNLEASHED! finds the Avengers back during the time when Stern was the series' writer, following the 1980s siege of Avengers Mansion in AVENGERS #270-277. While the Avengers are battered and beaten following the siege, Loki has found a new source of mystical energy, which can only be even more trouble for our heroes.

>AVENGERS: LOKI UNLEASHED! #1, written by Roger Stern with art by Ron Lim, hits comic book shops in September!

>Stern
Holy shit

Ron Lim is a nice artist

Nice to see Stern back on the Avengers.

Agreed, even if it's in a limited capacity

This is the second mini I've seen Marvel put out now that takes place in the past near/during a seminal moment in that title's history, with Symbiote Spider-Man being the other one. Coincidence or something more? Or does this play into the whole 80th anniversary or whatever?

I'm assuming this is a one shot like that Invaders one with Thomas/Ordway but still, Stern is enough to get me to give it a look.

>written by Roger Stern with art by Ron Lim
Well, looks like marvel knows how to get my money.

Most likely especially since I don't think Stern and Lim do comics work anymore but it'd be nice if it was 3-5 issues

Yes.

As long as it has nothing to do with Sonic...yeesh

But thanks for the storytime.
I've got almost all of Stern's run as singles. It's great stuff.

Thanks user. Philistines here don't understand the greatness of Stern's run.

>written by Roger Stern

BASED

Attached: 1447793358561.gif (200x199, 1.47M)

Instead of a god-damn Loki story, I'd rather they fucking let Roger tell the story that got killed when Grunwald forced him off the book: Avengers Vs Master Khan to clear Power Man's name after he was framed for murdering Iron Fist.

What?????

The silver and red on Ironman is so fucking good.

The big storyline Roger Stern planned for Avengers #300 was originally supposed resolve the cliffhanger left in the last issue of Power Man/Iron Fist.

PM/IF #125 ended with a boy who could turn into a Captain Marvel rip-off killing Iron Fist and Power Man getting framed for the murder. In part because the boy's power killed him before Power Man could get him to the authorities to confess to the murder.

Stern planned on revealing that the boy was a pawn of Master Khan (an Iron Fist villain) and had mind controlled the kid into murdering Danny.

It would have ended with Power Man joining the Avengers once they cleared his name, along with She-Hulk and Luke as a couple, as they would fall in love while Jen was defending Luke in court.

So why'd Gruenwald push him out?

Stern wrote Cap out of the book after Under Siege and made his waifu Monica the new leader of the team.

Gruenwald wasn't happy, especially since Cap was selling badly at the time and pulled a power play demanding Monica fail miserably as a leader and beg Cap to come back and take over the team leadership spot again.

Stern was also feuding with Chris Claremont over X-Men Vs Avengers. Stern insisted Magneto return to villainy at the end of the story/be written out of the X-Books, with Stern refusing to budge on an ending where the X-Men find out that Magneto brainwashed the judge to get acquitted and tell him that they'll kill him if he comes near the X-Men or New Mutants again. Stern got fired from the book and Tom DeFalco (IIRC) ended up writing a Chris Claremont approved ending where Magneto gets away with rigging the verdict and the X-Men never find out.

Also, there was rumor at the time that Stern wanted Mark Silvestri to draw the Avengers and Claremont outright poached him to be UXM's new artist.

So Stern, already pissed off, basically told Gruenwald to get bent and was kicked off of Avengers.

Looked it up. Gruenwald was a salty douche about his husbando Captain America making Stern's waifu Captain Marvel the leader of the Avengers and fucking fired him.
Then Monica was depowered and taken off the book.

Classy

Oh, you beat me. Thanks for the info.

Didn't know about the X-Men stuff.
Guess Stern wasn't as innocent as I assumed, trying to impose his will on Claremont the way Gruenwald tried on him.

Same, really speaks volumes about current Yea Forums
Thanks for the storytime user

>along with She-Hulk and Luke as a couple
So is it a complete coincidence that Bendis referenced that pairing a lot in Alias, or was that just another weird bit of classic Marvel trivia he knows, alongside "Carol Danvers gave birth to someone who mind-controlled her into falling love with him," and "Scarlet Witch goes insane sometimes"?

That reminds me; was Monica really as well loved as people say she was when she was first running around? Or is it a huge amount of revisionist bullshit because of how polarizing Genis and Carol were when they became Captain Marvel?

To be fair, Claremont was starting to piss people off at the time. He basically made Marvel put out TWO Wolverine-wank books (the 1986 Cap annual and Spidey Vs Wolverine) because he was still eternally butt-hurt over Wolverine jobbing hard in Secret Wars. And the whole X-Factor debacle.

They actually never dated in an actual comic. Bendis is just making stuff up.

Outside of a guest spot in Punisher and a one-off story in Marvel Comics Presents (which amounted to Marvel reminding readers that Luke was still a wanted fugitive), Luke Cage was jetisoned into limbo from 1986-1993. It was stated for a while, that DeFalco didn't like Luke Cage and considered him a dinosaur from the 1970s.

The hate for Luke was such that John Byrne was not allowed to use him in Namor when Byrne brought Danny back in the pages of Namor and resolved said cliffhanger. And his reunion with Danny and Luke officially being cleared of murder, taking place entirely off-camera before his short lived ongoing happened around 1993.

Black Knight is such an odd Avengers member but god damn do I love him

She was a real deal sort of thing in terms of fans liking her. Which makes how she was mistreated, abused, mocked and belittled by later writers all the more galling in terms of them shitting on a popular black character because they hated her but she was loved by the fans in spite of editorial hating her guts.

Oh, I know it never actually happened, I'm just curious if that script was such common knowledge that he might have known about it.

>The hate for Luke was such that John Byrne was not allowed to use him in Namor
>not allowed to use him

Fucking hell, I storytimed decades of Heroes For Hire comics, I should have known that!

I'm eternally annoyed that McDuffie's Monica one-shots never became ongoings.

Nocenti wanted to write more and he always threw a hissy fit preventing her

>along with She-Hulk and Luke as a couple

that would have been an interesting pairing

was he planning on bringing Iron Fist back to life?

the fuck you want? us to suck your cock? fuck off ya attention whore

Its weird, I really liked Stern's storylines but I absolutely hated the team lineup. I do not give a shit about Hercules, Namor, or the Black Knight. And don't even get me started on goddam Dr Druid.

Jesus Christ.

Old enough to have bought these issues off the spinner rack. I liked Monica well enough, a nice science-y power set and an interesting backstory that didn't feel pandering (a lieutenant in the New Orleans harbor patrol? that feel real, while think of every new black female character in the past 10 years who is a generic techno-genius)

Now that's some based fight
Stern manage to make the bugs take out two of the most powerfull MoE members in a credible way.

Thanks for the storytime

Thanks storytimer.

The story about X-Office European Tour is hilariously douchey. And the whole scene with Lilandra and F4 was the dumbest thing in early Claremont X-Men.

sjw artists not drawing women sexy enough

I thought Luke and Monica were supposed to date, not Luke and Jen.

You’re doing the lord’s work.
I just read the EPIC collection. Stern is the best Avengers. Nothing even comes close.

Yeah, I liked her- and , dude, she’s on the cover of their RPG. She was well liked and she has a great arc, cool powers and is really likable/grounded.

The reason Cap was selling badly is because Greunwald’s run was was a weak. I’ve read a lot of it and it is slog in places.

Damn, once the Avengers start BTFO'ing them left and right, it's beautiful. You don't see that comeuppance in style these days.

Also sucks to remember that Dr. Druid was alright at one point.

>DR. Druid
The first comics guys do do when someone gets fired or quits is fuck over their OCs
(SEE BPRD)

This is the first bad thing I've ever heard about Gru.

I ain't saying I thought he was an innocent saint, he was a yes-man to DeFalco but Stern was a WAY better writer.

I've heard about that a lot... was Abe someone else's OC? Heard he got unceremoniously killed off.

I mean, Dr. Druid wasn't the most inspired character, but even when they brought him back in Chaos War, if I recall, he got shat all over again.

She was OK...which was great.

She was an adult who was thrown into the Marvel hero world and she had a decent rise where she LEARNED about how it all worked. She was a very solid POV character who constantly wondered what the fuck she had gotten herself into ("DRACULA?!? Are you serious?!?") but rose to the challenge.

I think the only time she was written oddly was Secret Wars where she seemed to have a grudge against the X-Men...than again she was right when they ditched to join Magneto.

The point is that she wasn't immediately established as the bestest Captain Marvel evah from the get go and EARNED reader respect instead of demanding it.

>And don't even get me started on goddam Dr Druid.

Fuck you & read the Monster Hunter arc in Marvel Universe

>"DRACULA?!? Are you serious?!?"
Did ol' Vlad have the jungle fever for her, too?

Nah she fucked him up when they met

Thanks for the story time user. I always enjoyed the older writing of this period compared to now.

No he was Mignolia’s but man, all the other guys were Arcudi’s.

She made the cover for both editions. I don’t remember a single person bitching about it.
We’re talking comic fans here.
This period is the last time Marvel was truly great, imo.

Well, it helps that she wasn't FRONT AND CENTER, too. Kinda surprised by the lack of X-Men, just Wolverine doesn't feel right.

I can imagine, considering the slaughter in New Orleans.

>I do not give a shit about Hercules, Namor
I agree about the others, but this is just shit taste

>a retelling of the first avengers story is something to be hyped about
Nah

What's exciting about this? I'm dead serious. It's cute you want to play the Yea Forums doesn't read comics card but I don't see why anyone should care about this.

I can't believe there is still someone with taste on Yea Forums
You are a rare breed sir

might be my fav Cap moment ever.

I absolutely love how Buscema drew women

>a real writer back in Marvel
And it only took them several decades...

Stern's run through the 80's is the best of the property. Under Siege is a classic story. If you like modern Avengers, this is probably right up your alley.

When is him coming back too, bros?

The 1997 Heroes For Hire series had She-Hulk and Luke Cage on the team, #17 focused on them, and ending Jen agreeing to go on a date with Luke, but the series ended with #19, it was never followed up on. Bendis actually being aware of this is less likely than him just making things up and listing a number of heroines as former lovers of Cage, and happened to pick someone Luke had met in a published story. Bendis also said that the woman he was with in Alias #1 was meant to be Monica.

>Trapster and Whirlwind
Oh wow, one of the first Cap stories I read. Didn't recall Under Siege being soon after.

What I mostly remember from Druid, is that back then, Rogue used to french kiss anybody whose power she wanted to absorb, from the Thing to Mephisto.
But Druid? He only got a peck on his bald head in Avengers vs X-Men..
That must have been his super villain origins.

>The story about X-Office European Tour is hilariously douchey.
What story is this?

>Bendis actually being aware of this is less likely than him just making things up and listing a number of heroines as former lovers of Cage, and happened to pick someone Luke had met in a published story.
This, specially since Shulkie is well known to be a bombshell.

Even Shooter probably couldn't fix Marvel now without firing literally everybody and starting over.

Yup, virgin rage sounds more or less like the root of his problem if I recall.

>firing literally everybody and starting over
And what's wrong with that?

Despite being old, fat, balding and arrogant, after Stern's Avengers, and up to his death, Dr Druid got a lot of sex.

A bigger version of the original cover, for important reasons

Doesn't Zemo give him that photo back using some powers he acquired? Can't even remember that story, I want to say it happened in Thunderbolts.

And people were being bitchy at Steve for giving some of the Wrecking Crew the cold shoulder in Coates' Cap run but after reading this I can see why.

>Thunderbolts.
yes, during Civil War

She wasn't "Omigosh bestest evah!" but a lot of people liked her and they did get upset when she was taken off. She had her fanbase and a lot of old fart comic readers that I've talked to have a fondness for her.

Yeah I think Blood Stone arc and a few stories in his run were good but a lot of it wasn't that great and by the end of it it got pretty bad.

One shot or mini?

>Its weird, I really liked Stern's storylines but I absolutely hated the team lineup. I do not give a shit about Hercules, Namor, or the Black Knight. And don't even get me started on goddam Dr Druid.

well get ready, because it looks like the MCU is headed in this direction. Captain Marvel set up Monica, The Eternals seems like its going to set up Hercules, and there was reports of Fiege liking Black Knight.

The Avengers book went to shit after they fired Stern, so farewell MCU.

Not a big loss. It was pretty bad and now they don't even have Cap and Tony.

I have never liked Hercules. He always seemed like a half assed stand-in for Thor when writers want another mythical guy on the team.

Monica I liked, she seemed like a decent member that was more than just another strong guy. Avengers always came off as a mixed bag of street level and strong people who punch things.

Why did she have the little arm flap wings when she does not use air currents to fly?

are there any instances of "writer returns to comic property after writing a great run on it decades ago" turning out okay?

Spider-Man had a couple cases. Also Peter David pulled it off I think. Dunno about Claremont.

It's not like this is Stern's first time back since his first run.

But the MCU is bringing in Stern stuff, not getting rid of it. Why farewell?
