I character can not be physically present and still have an outsized influence on the narrative. For example: Peter seeing shrines to Iron Man on the street, Peter seeing murals of Iron Man, Peter wearing Tony's glasses, Spider-Man helping present a check from Stark Industries at a benefit, Spider-Man wearing the "Iron Spider" suit and being asked if he's going to be the new Iron Man, Peter being told by Fury that Stark chose him as an Avenger, and that's why he needs to step up, Happy reassuring Peter that Tony's sacrifice was made with Peter being able to take up the cause after him in mind, Happy being a supporting character in Spider-Man's new mythos. He doesn't need to be in the movie, he's all over it.
