First two seasons are great though. And we also have a staff full of literal fucking faggots talking about how they draw Cass as gender-queer or whatever but luckily that doesn't actually affect the plot.
The songs and the plot affects the plot. The songs are also clever enough to have double, triple, and perhaps even quadruple meaning.
"Ready as I'll ever be." foreshadows the end of season 2.
I'd say that Tangled's main weakness is that as much as it wants to create this sort of tragedy with Raps friends turning against her for selfish but understandable reasons, it kinda leans too heavily on MAGIC MOON ROCKS as a plot device. So you can never tell when a betrayal is because of Le Epic Shakesperan tragedy, or because of the evil glowing moon rocks.
Still, I can at least stomach Tangled the Musical. I really did try to watch Steven Universe, but god. It's too much.

I just won't watch it, I forced myself through the end of that last season just because I heard it was the planned ending for if it never got anything else, and it was just as obnoxious and annoying as ever. I think it's a show of high highs and low lows. There's nice music, nice background, hit-and-miss animation, etc.
A few of the characters are genuinely well-written, with consistent and overarching story development and strong backstories. But there's a lot of chaff to get through as well, with regular filler episodes that take a break from the more interesting members of the cast in favor of one-note side-characters in a less than fleshed out setting.

If Jasper's VA is not on the list of VAs with musical performances then she's probably not going to sing, which isn't surprising, but if the story directly follows after the events of Change Your Mind I think it's safe to assume she will be in it to some capacity since she just made a return and we know she's staying around for next season, or that she will at least get a reason for why she temporarily fucks off, like wanting to take time to come to terms with everything by traveling the Earth solo, which would be disappointing, but again not surprising.
At the same she's probably not on friendly terms with the Crystal Gems yet and they can't just skip over a redemption or shove it all into one movie. I'm more worried they'll gloss over her reaction to Pink being Rose like they did with everyone else, the news should be existential crisis triggering for her, she should be livid, I would be most disappointed if she just immediately accepted everything and became blindly loyal to Steven and would rather they just hold all her developmental back for S6.
I do remember Jasper's VA going to a con panel with the VAs for Amethyst, Lapis, Peridot, and Pearl where they discussed the movie but I don't remember which one that was

Things need to have at least 5 songs in them to be considered a musical, SU usually only has 1 or maybe 2 songs in any given episode and they're usually spread out by the length of several episodes. Like Chang Your Mind was an hour long special and there were only 3 songs in it, and they were all diegetic and they were all at the end. The only part of SU so far that you'd call a musical is "Mr. Greg"

As I said she probably will be to some capacity since she just made a return, her VA has been in multiple recording sessions, and Rebecca has a track record of including her in everything, but I doubt she will play a major role because of the other problems I mentioned, skipping over her redemption and reaction to the PD twist just so she can cheer on Steven when he talk no jutsus the villain of the movie would suck balls. I wouldn't even get my hopes up for a lot of the characters listed under the musical performances to have major roles because there's only so much time to divide between all of them in one movie, hopefully the pacing isn't as rushed as CYM's.

Centipeetle hasn't gotten a multi season spanning arc where that had her serve as the main antagonist, go through her own major change and personal issues, gave her complicated depth and backstory that heavily tied her story into the Pink Diamond plot line and the war, and set her up for an eventual redemption. There was nothing to resolve with her outside of her corruption, unlike Jasper, who was healed of corruption but is probably the only character left unhappy and without closure by the end of CYM, because her corruption was only a result of her succumbing to her inner turmoil, and she has yet to to find out that all the beliefs and motives that drove her actions since she was born have been based on lies.
Jasper had gotten some character development but she still has a lot of stuff to work through to complete it and resolve her plethora of emotional baggage around fusion, being from earth, her messy relationships with other major characters, etc that were mostly established in season 3. Centipeetle might be the original corrupted monster and I don't have anything against her, but she's never been a very complicated character, what is there left to do with her that can't be done with the other healed gems?
I doubt either of them are going to have much screentime in the movie regardless, but Jasper definitely has more substance and potential that will be worthy of focus next season.
Not that user but I don't think we have enough evidence to confirm either way. The synopsis and inclusion of the Diamond's VAs makes it seem like it could take place after CYM, though if it does I'm wondering how they plan to build up the new antagonist as a larger threat than the rulers of homeworld when she's probably just a random high class gem, why couldn't Steven just get White Diamond to zap her now that she's on his side?
If it takes place before CYM I would imagine her being dealt with in a similar way to the one in STL.

Centipeetle's backstory starts and ends with her being a random soldier sent to Earth to fight in the war and then getting corrupted while evacuating, sure that's more than you can say for a character like Peridot who wasn't involved in the war at all, but she's not really tied into the Pink Diamond plot line any more than the other corrupted gems.
Jasper's existence was a product of Pink Diamond's mistakes and she was made on earth to fight the crystal gems in the war. Her issues stem from how she was mksguided by Pink's lies and raised to hate herself for coming from earth and not being able to fulfill her purpose for Pink Diamond, her plight was centered around her obsession with proving she's not worthless for that and getting revenge on Rose for her faked murder of Pink Diamond, forcing her to be made from a shitty kindergarten and born into war, turning her home planet into an embarrassment to homeworld. She kicked off the Pink Diamond murder in Earthlings and forced Steven to realize that his mom has ruined lives.
They can maybe get away with glossing over Centipeetle's reception of the twist like they did with Amethyst, Ruby, Greg's since she doesn't have any more issues to be resolved and she never had any turmoil or motives surrounding Rose or Pink Diamond, they can't do the same with Jasper.

Gems ARE very human-like, though. They can appreciate watching a good movie or the company of a friend. Their society actively prevents behaviour like this. This is why Peridot so readily mocked her Diamond when she threatened her new home. This is why the Crystal Gems got so much traction in the first place. The Diamonds will freely use their people in whatever they deem fit; shatter them for fuc-- fusing, stitch their shattered remains together, put them on a wall or a mirror or whatever. Not to mention the who-knows-how-many gems they shattered at birth for coming out wrong. If another gem was in-charge of the Earth, someone like Amethyst could not exist.
Pink Diamond actually had sympathy/empathy for gems like Amethyst because she knows what it's like to be wrong. She's the runt of her group by a significant margin, and it's implied she naturally had a jester-esque personality which was obviously rebuked heavily. Her life experience was let her appreciate the beauty of the Earth whereas someone like Yellow would just see filth.

When your episodes are 30 seconds and often 3 minutes of them are musical numbers, it most certainly does. Imagine if after the Wedding sequence, Steven sang at the reception about how it feels good to have people around him be happy. And then when Blue and Yellow show up, Peridot leads a song of impending doom transitioning into Bismuth and the rest of the OG CGs singing a march to battle. Then when Steve goes into their head Blue and Yellow sing some kind of ballad explicitly stating their feelings of grief rather than showing it in their thoughts and actions.
That's the kind of shit you get in musicals. It adds nothing and diminishes the impact of the one necessary song.

One thing I really hope the movie clears up... the fact that Rose being completely gone makes zero sense from a writing and logistical standpoint. It goes against nearly everything both the crewniverse and the show itself has said/implied about Steven, his gem, how he has her memories w/o direct access to them (and receives them at the most convenient times as well; stuff he couldn't possibly know without her memories), among plenty of other examples. Something the show/crewniverse refuses to explain is how her gem got "blanked" in the first place, Lapis' gem didn't get erased due to being in a mirror for 6000 years so how could Rose's? I don't even like Rose, it just makes zero sense based on everything we know so far; I hope it gets cleared up at least somewhat in the movie.

In the SU piece, the melody is mired in abstraction and synthetic instrumentation, Patti's range isn't used to the best of its ability; her song is used to cram in all the exposition of the scene and characters as lyrics. Sugar doesn't show here, she tells, and in this case, Patti ends up talking most of the time rather than really singing.
In "Don't Cry for Me Argentina", the song goes only as quick as it needs to, uses Patti's full range and capabilities, and benefits from Webber's grasp of musical composition. It is atmospheric, tragic, and emotionally compelling. Sugar just isn't cut out to write feelings besides "cute".
