To be fair, the Avatar has always taken a side in wars, it's pretty much part of the job. Korra dragging Asami into conflicts isn't the issue, it's if it starts happening the other way around. A CEO with the avatar on a leash is a terrifying idea (although in this specific case, also kind of hot)

Avatars are neutral and only took sides when things got super bad. Korra siding with the Water Tribe and assisting in the creation of a Civil War was not something the Avatar should have done. She should have stayed out of it especially since she assisted a terrorist who tried to kill the neutral leader of another nation and helped start the civil war.
