The problem with RWBY is that, by Monty's own admission, Monty gave Miles and Kerry anime homework and then asked them to write a story around some fight scenes he'd been making. Most problems come back to that.
So, RWBY is every shitty light novel adaptation ever. Because Sword Art Online was the biggest anime, when the project was still on the ground.
There's not much to the concept, beyond the anime tropes.

BnHA fights are mostly dialogue, the strategies are sometimes cool but the choreography is meh, most of the weight is emotional. RWBY is braindead but it looks cool

Rwby would have more going for if the fights had more weight behind them.

Part of the reason why the Yang/Blake vs. Adam fight was one of the best we've had in a long time was because the characters had an actual history and the outcome would have weight no matter who won.

Ok, imagine someone tells you about a burger, a nice juicy burger. With a charcoal-grilled patty, crisp lettuce, fresh mayonnaise and more. They show you the ingredients and all seems good, the tomatoes are fresh, the lettuce looks great, buns are freshly baked and fluffy.
You see that they are making your burger and notice that like half of the patty got stuck in the grill and never made it into the burger. Ok, at leas the rest will be goo...
The lettuce has gotten sloppy from the heat, the mayonnaise is not emulsified well, the tomatoes are cut too thick, lots of problems.

I am not saying that BnHA fights are bad, What I am saying is that they have more emotional than physical weight. Sure, when you care about the characters and know that the fight's result will have an effect on the story even a thumb fight can be very good, but that has allowed BnHA to be able to not care much about choreography and more about characterization and story, and as a story it is completely understandable to want those things to have an important impact
Would RWBY be better if aside from fights they also had a good story to back them up? Of course, but as it is right now RWBY had to compensate it's lack of a good story with entertaining and over-the-top fights, and if we are to compara RWBY and BnHA fights side by side, ignoring story and characters, RWBY has more entertaining fight-scenes, meaningless and done by characters you don't fully care about, but at least they look cooler while doing it. BnHA may be a better show, but RWBY had better fights

This is the truth. Granted, in any other show she'd be a middle-of-the-pack girl with only brief focus and a small fanbase while other, less cliched girls got the lion's share of the spotlight. Yang's arc is good on paper but bites off more than it can chew for the show's runtimes and focus. This led to her being in Volume 4 for like 10 minutes when that was the time she needed focus the most. Like Yang SHOULD be the best character, but her arc just demanded more focus and better writing chops that M&K weren't willing to give.

Blake's arc just sucks. On top of being boring, making her parents fucking royalty was such a mistake and indirectly fucks up the character in a lot of ways.

The Adam debacle is interesting because it was a consequence of them aborting the Faunus Social Justice subplot making much of the story just... baseless

When they decided Faunus oppression is not so bad our heroes need to do something about it, that apparently those White Fang Faunus are exploited workers under monopolistic capitalism at best and upper class revanchists (Blake Blake Blake) at worst, Adam became a madman. There was no ideology left in him for Blake to grapple with, so the writers amped up the abusive relationship to melodramatic levels. Then, because they're amazingly bad at their job, they got scared of that, made him cray-cray dysfunctional insane and killed him off.

It always amuses me how much people hated Raven, Yang and Weiss's scenes early in volume 5 when it was airing, because it was just Raven be a cagey hypocrite and repeating information we already knew, but ended up being some of the best parts of the volume because Weiss got to be top tier Yang support, Yang got to briefly exist as a character outside of shitty kitty's orbit (same reason whyv 4 was good to her), and we got a better look at Raven as a character.

Now they just need to let her have agency again (separate her from the fucking cat) and either nut up about Ozpin or shut up.

This. Monty was getting better, and fast, given the Yang Versus Neo fight. But the fight scenes follow the weapons instead of the people using them. So they look sticky. As the fights play out like they've been rehearsed.
