Animation, on the other hand, is a trade skill where your projects are often out of your control and timeliness and consistency are a major aspect of the work. Her new "style" is piss easy to draw and keep on-model, meaning she only needs a fraction of the time or effort to finish her projects and build a portfolio when compared to use the style in the pic you posted.

Just because some hacks emerged from cubism doesn't demerit Picasso's art; he had an interesting way to make multiperspective look really cool but its the classical case of DaVinci where everyone just accepts its art at face value (like how Mona Lisa is hyped up to be this grand masterpiece when really it just got popular because it was stolen). Calarts is an animation school and a lot of it is focused on simplifying form to be easier to animate and easier distinguished in animation— same face and bodies that aren’t extremely easy to distinguish just by their shape are really looked down on, everything is supposed to be easily identifiable by it’s form even if you were to just draw an outline of it. My under-educated guess is that it's a product of being fairly early on in terms of the art revival of Europe. We're talking late 1400's, early 1500's, so I'd imagine there was a fair bit of hold over in medieval stylization. People like Rembrandt and Carvaggio had people like Michelangelo and Raphael to work off of, while the latter two mostly had the religious artists who put more stake into symbolic representation than capturing real human form.

What does form mean in this context?

The left side is very "stiff". The anatomy looks more like posed mannequins then humans with musculature and skeletons. Basically, it isn't as natural in terms of things like weight and pose.

The right also shows comfort with more free viewing angles. Like how a lot of beginner artists only feel comfortable drawing the body from a certain angle, or use basic viewing angles to frame scenes.

Honestly the only bad part is Elizabeth's face, which looks nothing like her, which indicates to me that it might be the artist's go to female face template. Faces are hard, especially differentiating them. That's why even otherwise competent artists same face can be an issue.

I suppose I meant that the artist showed a better understanding of how to actually represent the human figure. Look at the fingers and the hands, as well as the shape of the head. Even the bodies as well seem more natural then the left, where all of that looks more like a stock male head, stock female head, and very basic hand structures.

Another example would be how Booker's head, neck and back are interacting. The head position on the left is very unnatural, and is done because the artist is probably not as comfortable with profiles (which can be tricky) as they are with a more standard face template. The weight being placed on the back is also better in the right. See the slight lean to the left? That indicates weight being put on the left leg by bending the waist at the hip, which is a more action orientated stance.

TL:DR The right's anatomy is dun gooder.

I think the left is pretty stiff but even with the stylization the right pic is also stiff as fuck, Elizabeth in the left appears to be mid-motion of pushing back while on the right she's just slightly hunching with squared shoulders. Also those action faces have features wandering like crazy and her face looks flat as a board with a very unrefined nose dropped on it, whereas the left pic has many subtle curves and a pleasant flowing in the hair.

Well, I do agree that Elizabeth's face in he right is definitely the worst part about the piece, but I don't know if I agree on it being very stiff. How her arms are interacting with her shoulders, how her upper body is interacting with the lower body, and how the hands/fingers are positioned all imply more weight and tension in the muscles, which gives a more natural feel. The shoulders are a bit too square though.

The right looks like a still image, like a staged photograph, it doesn't have a sense of before and after, they're just posing. Yes, the posing is done right well balanced technically better than the left no doubt.But still just looks like a pose.
The left instead gives a better sense of movement. You can tell that they've found themselves suddenly surrounded and had to turn bak to back, determined but also worried.

Pretty linear if you ask me; just different angles. Left has more detail some places, right has more detail other, left has a softer more rounded look, right has more bold shading. I don't know, like I can see differences and I like some parts of one more than the other, but all and all it seems like a zero sum. Half of these are just people who worked more or less on the picture or art in general at different times. You can see where a lot of people used to care about drawing more when they were younger, so they popped in when they saw the meme and threw something together quick as a distracted adult and posted it for social media participation.

This is exactly why art teachers tell their students to stop drawing in fucking anime styles. You have to learn the fundamentals of anatomy and realism before you start stylizing. If you keep drawing in anime styles, you’ll find that once you’re tired of that style and try to be more realistic that you have been copying from a flawed template.

If you mean photo-realistic painting it is better to think of it as a demonstration of technical mastery than art. Most good artwork uses realism as a starting point but will distort or alter things in different ways to various degrees to get across whatever idea the artist is trying to communicate.

A lot of the effect I'm seeing here is using a textured brush in photoshop.

There's a lot to be complimented, to be sure, but a lot of the reason digital coloring looks so dire these days is that it's almost all flat or overtextured to shit. Simple, old-style art is still possible with brushes and still looks good if done well.

It's Clip Studio Paint. They're edited from some weeb brushes I got out of the assets store for free but I don't know how to find them again they're in moon speak. I know there's a lot of guys that get bitchy about digital art but if you know that you're doing it can be exactly the same.
