If you search for "Zutara" on FFnet, the search function comes up with 5807 stories, which is way off from the numbers on either of those lists.

I'm guessing that's why whoever made the chart in the OP used AO3; the exact numbers are a lot more fuzzy to figure out from FFnet.

I did, kind of. I wrote a Sokka/Katara/Suki smutfic that ended up being 15 chapters long or something stupid, that intercuts the fucking with more character focus and relationship stuff. It was certainly a lot more tolerable but once it was finished, I was kind of done with the whole thing.

I think the romantic pairing indicator is relatively newer, and when the fandom was at the height people just used that main character indicator and ship names in the descriptions. So the 'main character' indicators are probably more accurate.

Yeah. I vaguely remember that initially there were no character lists, then at some point you got the ability to list two characters, then even later they added the romantic pairing indicator and the ability to list four characters.
Either way, the exact statistics of AtLA stories are really difficult to determine from FFN. Some of the stories that have Zuko appearing with for example Aang or Katara are still stories where they're just the main characters, and he ends up paired with Mai or someone else.

Most of them are, but those "I'm- I mean WE" scenes, or the little trick of having a little sibling indirectly making you compliment the other one's looks, plus a few gestures I think aren't in that image, are romantic cliches so old and practiced that people are basically hardcoded to assume that kind of subtext the moment they see them, even if there's none.

Add to that the fact that Zuko was stuck with Mai at the time and it's easy to understand why people were jumping to the first alternative that was actually a pleasant person, and one that made Zuko's fucked up life more bearable (with Iroh and the Gaang away, she was the only confidant he had that was a good influence on him, even when his mom came back there was not much she could do to help him deal with his shit.)

what is the premise of the story?

White Lotus is going to get desperate and they're going to do something insanely stupid, such as succeeding in assassinating someone close to Azula, but in the process leaving evidence where their main base is located. The White Lotus will also figure out where Aang is and try to pressure/intimidate him into helping them, which means him and Katara go to said main base. At the very end of the arc, the book is published and people love it, and Ozai becomes paranoid about the relationship between the two of them, sending someone shadow them at all times.

He is defeated, enslaved and sold into the FN backstreet gladiator business, then forgotten for two years until the two are forced together again by circumstances in which Azula needs a gladiator.
I'm really picky when it comes to fanfiction since a great deal of it it utter shit, up to the point where I refuse to read anything without perfect English. With that in mind, let me tell you that of the two million words, not a single one is wasted. It's seriously amazing and 100% devoid of degeneracy.

Anyone been reading Another Brother? It has Zuko ending up at the Southern Water Tribe when he's young and getting adopted as a brother to Sokka and Katara. Meanwhile, his disappearance halted the travels where Iroh was mourning Lu Ten, and this prevented his epiphany about the Fire Nation being evil. Because of that, Iroh's still firmly on the side of the Fire Nation and he's hunting the avatar (and later his nephew as well).
The fic was started in 2008 and somehow it's still going. The author has done a bunch of slash stuff in the past, but so far there hasn't really been any romance in this story; just siblings and family stuff.
For some reason I've got a soft spot for stories where Zuko ends up stuck at either Water Tribe and interacts with people like Hakoda, Yue, Chief Arnook, or even some OCs. I don't know what fascinates me about those stories so much.

Fanfic is largely womens' realm. The prevalence of Azula/Zuko r34 is because fanart is a little more evenly split between male and female artists, and dudes are way more likely to draw m/f incest.

ATLA comics are canon, Zuko x Suki is a patrician choice of shipping. Sokka doesn't deserve her, and Mai doesn't deserve Zuko. Don't give a single shit about Korra and related comics. Fuck Bryke.

ZukoxSuki is the shittiest pairing I could have ever thought of. Their only major interaction in the main series was Zuko burning down her village because she sheltered the Avatar. After that he's just mixed in with the rest of the gang post-becoming a good guy. He had more interaction with Katara in the Southern Raiders episode than he did with Suki in total and I'd hope we can agree that Zutara was fucking shit from the start.

Still better than Mai. Fuck I hate this character. I hope Azula violently kills this bitch in her sleep someday.

Of course it was the fucking shippers dumbass, there wasn't anything else to it BUT the shippers. Like pretty much every ship in a show that isn't a confirmed relationship. At least Naruto/Sakura shippers had the excuse of a one-way attraction to fuel their raging fem-lust. There was literally zero fuel to the Zutara fire beyond basic human decency towards each other. And that only came three quarters into the last season.

It's the same thing with the Zuko/Suki thing. At most they act like concerned friends towards each other, but that somehow becomes barely repressed lust in the minds of the shipper. You "people" are why we aren't allowed to have close male friends anymore without 90% of the fan content being about them fucking.

That's easy really. Just have Zuko join them earlier and build up their interactions til they naturally fall in love.

or you could start with them both feeling psychical attraction to eachother after water scrolle episode that's kind of buzzing in the back of their minds up until they end up in a cell together waiting for death and things become awkard
