Howard was literally chemically imbalanced his entire life, with his views and company being a constant paradox. Half his stories are a reflection of this, where the protagonist thinks that evil immigrants are up to something, then it turns out it was real aliens all along and the immigrants are innocent.
For a paranoid depressive with cancer, he kept a surprising diversity of friends. Despite amicably seperating and divorcing from his Jewish wife, he never signed the final document, supposedly keeping it for sentimental reasons.
His correspondence reflects this, with Nietzche being in his regular mailing list, a man who would later have his views stolen to support a subversive regime that he would never truly respect in a million years.

If i remember right. He thought lovecrafts stories were boring and dumb. Didnt care for the concepts, which makes no sense when his show is based on the same.

In this day and age it is easy to massively influenced by lovecraft without ever having read his work, let alone liked it.
So many of the major writers in the horror fantasy area draw on him that it's seeped into the water.
