Some cartoons like Trolley Trouble are in the public domain. Basically, whichever ones Universal declined to renew in the 1950s. The rest will lapse 95 years after their publication.

The character of Oswald is (probably) still a registered trademark of Disney, and will be as long as they maintain it.

A character Walt Disney made before he made Mickey Mouse while he was working at Universal. Disney bought the rights to him in 2006. He was the antagonist in the Epic Mickey games on Wii, which featured a lot of forgotten Mickey Mouse characters.

Not sure, but she's gone through at least one major design overhaul since she was introduced. I think most of her appearances have been in the Italian comics.

The Italian Disney comic circuit is largely unknown outside of Europe, and it's kind of weird that Disney doesn't try bringing more of what is successful there to their other markets.

I get you, but on the other hand, having diverse topics can help keep a thread pushed and healthy while other side topics run alongside. Waifuism can be a potent way to do so, but can also sink the thread in other ways (like pissing off a mid by posting Clarabelle in a bikini, for example). I say waifus are all right in moderation, but I'd love to learn more about other inkblots at the same time.

Oswald had a bear version of Pete, a donkey who was his steed who I assume was his own "Horace," Ortensia, 420 kids which have potential to be their own thing like 101 dalmatians, Francine the slut bunny, obsessive hippo ex-gf from the Lantz shorts, Whiskers who is Ortensia's rich banker father, Homer who is Ortensia's little brother, Oswald's 420 cat nephews who were from Lantz shorts, his bear friend from that Norwegian comic.
There's probably a lot more, but I feel like Oswald's cast based on his shorts have potential for their own development.

He had no real re-occurring group of friends during the Disney shorts.

There were one-offs, rivals, and lovers, but Oswald has no one to compare Donald and Goofy to.

my hope is that they kind of start over. if they start acting like there's a canon and taking it seriously, it kind of breaks the spirit of the thing. i mean, he was different ages in almost every cartoon. old man, young man, husband, bachelor, no kids, lots of kids, two kids, no kids but nephews... it probably turns out Ortensia's name was Sadie the whole time... and lest we forget, many of the Disney shorts are still lost, and practically everything from the year after Disney are still lost.

yeah, the comic i have is mid 50's brown oswald with two kids. he is in a woody woodpecker comic. the comic is a bit crumbly but i'll try to scan it tomorrow. It's not the rubber hose glory days but it's still his legacy.
