It laid a good ground rule that they aren't inherently evil but they aren't just misunderstood victims either. The real lesson is that, no matter how overtly you set the tone for your show, your writers can still fuck it up later.

I don't think magic is comparable to cars because it's only in the hands of a few retards who generally use it dangerously and irresponsibly.
If a car was only given to like one person each generation and they killed a bunch of people with it every time and there was no easy way for any others to get cars without stealing one, then yeah I guess I'd say get rid of cars.
It's not about eliminating anything that can cause harm, but getting rid of something that's causing obvious harm right now and has been used irresponsibly for centuries. The proportion of people harmed by a single person's magic is comparable to multiple different fatalities by cars, even if the number is lesser (as in, one Butterfly probably does more damage than one driver throughout their life).
