Finally watched Oban Star-Racers properly... actually finished it like a week ago, but it kind of left me speechless.
Seriously, this show needs a fucking warning label. You think it's about a cute chick MC in a bunch of CG alien races? HAHAHAHAHA IT'S ACTUALLY RAW EMOTIONAL PAIN FROM BEGINNING TO END
I should hate you guys for hyping up this show, as it's pretty mediocre in almost every area. Plot - pretty basic, though I do wonder if Mystery Incorporated ripped this off (only those of you who've seen the entirety of both will know what I'm talking about). The dialogue and voice acting constantly reminded me of the Cardcaptors dub - not that that's necessarily a bad thing, mind you. The characterization ranged from pretty good to incredibly annoying, with the characters repeatedly making incredibly stupid decisions in the earlier episodes. The music... what music? Was it even there? The OP/ED are quite catchy, but why aren't there full English versions of the songs (apparently you can find the OP in French but not English)?
I could talk about how even without reading behind-the-scenes info it's incredibly obvious this was a pure passion project. The worldbuilding is the other highlight of the show, besides the emotional impact - it's on another level, whether it's the actual worlds, the creatures inhabiting them, or even the races themselves.
And yet all I can really say is that I'm so glad this is anime. Because if it weren't, I'd be forced to admit that there's a cartoon out there that has *more* SOUL than W.I.T.C.H.
I've known about Oban for a long time - just never watched it properly until now, mainly because I don't like anime.
And this is what you call a balanced review, so you can tell it's genuine. (I know, it's weird to see one of those on Yea Forums.)
Parker Flores
If it is anime, post it in the anime board.
Samuel Wilson
You and both know perfectly well Oban is both Yea Forums and Yea Forums, but usually posted here.
Now kindly stop shitting up my thread.
Ryder Powell
>it kind of left me speechless[...]RAW EMOTIONAL PAIN FROM BEGINNING TO END >I should hate you guys for hyping up this show, as it's pretty mediocre in almost every area Shut up, faggot.
Aiden Sullivan
This is witchfag?
Caleb Anderson
The show toyed with my emotions to paper over its sheer lack of talent in almost every other area (worldbuilding aside). I'd hate it for that, if it didn't touch me so deeply.
You know... Para-Dice is so out of place for a show like Oban, it just has to have been a fetish thing.
Christian Long
(you)
Ayden Sanders
Still waiting for the BD release and OST volume 2.
Btw, why is volume 1 mastered so fucking quietly?
Jaxon Lee
Did Oban recently release in Russia? I remember a Russian friend discovering it for the first time in like 2016.
Wyatt Thompson
Are you retarded? Russia was where Jetix was most popular, every Jetix (and Fox Kids) show has a significant following there to this day.
Jacob Brooks
>Are you retarded? No I just don't keep up with Russian animation release dates.
Eli Thompson
>it's fucking Witchfag His name is Wyatt Creed.
Aiden Harris
Jetix was a global franchise you moron. Nothing to do with Russia specifically.
Dylan Harris
Different anons. Same user as chartfag, TheBatmanfag, and GFfag though.
Carson Lopez
>It's Witchfag >And yet all I can really say is that I'm so glad this is anime. Because if it weren't, I'd be forced to admit that there's a cartoon out there that has *more* SOUL than W.I.T.C.H. >Even Witchfag admits that Witch doesn't have enough soul
You're right. Confirmation Bias is more appropriate
Carter Russell
Confirmation bias... when I literally just admitted another show has more soul?
Keep trying samefag, I'm sure you'll figure out the right term eventually. (Though this thread'll probably be archived by then)
Kayden Gonzalez
You straight up said that you're glad that Oban Star Racers can technically be considered an anime so you don't have to admit that it's the cartoon with the most soul. This is also despite the fact that Yea Forums will not talk about this show.
>read first sentence thinking user is being overdramatic for shitpost-y reasons >not even half-way finished reading this autistic paragraph and can already tell it's either w.i.t.c.h.fag or some plebbit poster >mfw it's fucking w.i.t.c.h.fag
Nothing's wrong with the shows, it's that WITCHfag has latched onto them and makes it near-impossible to discuss without his autistic opinions spilling into the conversation.
Sure as shit hope Oban doesnt get that treatment for what little threads we have
Jason Jackson
WITCH is Italian
Jayden Collins
Depends on how much Witchfag pushes his newfound interest. WITCH itself can still sometimes get talked about when people don't fall for the faggot's bait, or the rare occasion that he's absent from the board, but those moments are few and far between.
>show where a fucking giant tentacle crab monster pilots a giant organic spaceship and living hieroglyphics ride on metal rods that float just because whilst playing hynotic tunes >a cat robot is out of place
Grayson Gray
Doesn't the ending show only Molly, Aikka, Muir and the two lesbian aliens returning home? The rest are presumably dead.
Logan Jackson
Because the French are giant weeaboos and the Japanese are giant ouiaboos.
Jonathan Rodriguez
The point was to have all sort of people being there for all sort of reasons. From sapient giant scarab to mystical alien, from wanting to save their people or the pettiest reason. Being out of place is being in the right place.
The 2D was done in Japan, but I think Sav! moved to Japan.
Nathaniel Richardson
Oban is a good show, but I hate that it's basically the only sci-fi racing cartoon around. You'd think racing cartoons in general would be more popular with producers, since the CG vehicles make for instant cost saving. And the idea of racing isn't going to stop being popular, ever.
Also, fuck you EA, Fallen Order looks Anthem levels of piss awful boring. Where's my fucking pod racing game?
Christopher Russell
I mean you got furry hotwheels these days too, which was alright, and some racing cartoons from the past. I guess also a few animes. Problem is just Oban does it really well in a way. Even if a number of the races never really felt like actual races. They also had some really cool environments and designs in general. >podracing game Yes please
She may not be cute anymore, but good Lord she got hot!
Austin Collins
Are you retarded? She looks like a feminist caricature now. Even OG Molly was pushing it, but she retained so much insecurity that it wasn't a big deal.
Leo Ramirez
>She looks like a feminist caricature now. How? She's always been a punk tomboy.
Can the shootout with Rush really be considered a race, when most of it was target shooting? Or the Para-Dice one for example. They all had some silly gimmicks. I think the pit on Oban was a bit better with the rings and just racing to get checkpoints, but that was a bit less of a circuit thing too. Also quite a number of the vehicles didn't look like racers really. Fun designs and all, but not what I imagine when I hear "racecraft". The mining drill thing or the pirate ship. You get the idea.
Still all good because it makes for some fun episodes, but that's the one thing I always found a little silly.
Define your issue with the design user, I'm really curious. Do you not like short hair?
>She looks like a feminist caricature now. Even OG Molly was pushing it RENT FREE
Nicholas Young
>Can the shootout with Rush really be considered a race, when most of it was target shooting? Or the Para-Dice one for example. Yes, how are they not races? In both you had to be fastest, there were just other elements added on to make them more interesting. >They all had some silly gimmicks. You mean immensely creative gimmicks. >but that was a bit less of a circuit thing too. What does that even mean? >Also quite a number of the vehicles didn't look like racers really. Clearly, your childhood lacked Wacky Races. In all seriousness though, it doesn't matter what they look like. What matters is what they do - racing. And they did that awesomely.
Daniel Wood
>You're not making a coherent argument... You never made an argument to counter, you just said the design was a feminist caricature for seemingly no reason.
Joshua Cook
Again don't get me wrong, I loved all of it, but there's definitely more racing in something like say Cyber Formula or furry hotwheels. Hell even the flashbacks to the races with Molly's mother. It makes for a bit of a differnt feel. I don't know I am not good at describing it. >circuit Most of the races on Alwas were on a closed track, Oban was more of a checkpoint thing where they were far more open in looking for the rings. >Wacky Races That it did. However this is also just a preference thing. I like racecraft that look a bit more like it. The Arrow is top, as is the Trident and that P-51 thing from Super Racer too for example. I like having cool machines that are meant to go fast. The bug or the mining thing don't really evoke that.
Not if it's chopped to 16:9, no. Now if the show were released in proper widescreen...
Brody Edwards
I'm essentially going to watch oban for the first time since it aired Unfortunately on the rare occasions i did happen to watch it as a kid i spoiled the ending for myself and remember it up until now so that's a downside, but aside from that what am i in for?
Nathan Lopez
>Not if it's chopped to 16:9, no I can't remember, was that asked in the survey? I'm fairly certain almost everyone would vote against it. Plus you're not obligating yourself to buy it, just by more people expressing interest makes it more likely it'll be released. >if the show were released in proper widescreen Wasn't it animated in 4:3 though? How would you create a "proper" widescreen version?
Ryan Evans
>what am i in for? Like I said, an enormous amount of emotional pain. The ending doesn't even have that much to do with it, except for one critical aspect.
Well, that and incredibly awesome races.
Jace Watson
I heard it was made in HD, or at least 16:9 originally and just never aired that way (because Jetix was an SD channel).
If not, then obviously it should be released in the original 4:3 format.
Parker Carter
It's not. Everything was done in 4:3. Eiffel's financers pushed him to produce it in 4:3 even though he initially wanted to do it in 16:9.
Actually both a 4:3 full and a 16:9 version will be available. The 16:9 version is, according to Eiffel, specifically positioned shot by shot.
You're in for a great time, soul in every episode, and an amazing soundtrack. And the half season finales are pretty great. Episode 13, 17, 23, 24 and most of the finale are my favorites.
>It's not. Everything was done in 4:3. Source? >The 16:9 version is, according to Eiffel, specifically positioned shot by shot. WTF does that mean? Either the extra footage exists, or it doesn't...
Carter Reyes
>And the half season finales are pretty great. But there's only one?
Connor Mitchell
I think he's talking about the final part of the Alwas cycle.
Oliver Lewis
Obviously, episode 13 of 26. But what are the others?
Blake Jones
I meant the mid season finale. The end of the Alwas Cycle
>Do you not like short hair? Well yes, that's part of it. Girls should have long hair, period.
But OG Molly has short hair too and doesn't look nearly as much like a feminist bitch (though she sure does sound like one in the English dub - thanks Canada).
Landon Ward
That's also kind of true. Everywhere I go is a sausage fest, even if it's not cartoon-related.
Tyler Gonzalez
She's voiced by Hamtaro.
Lucas Howard
She's voiced by Mimi actually. Regardless, her voice doesn't fit this show at all (though that's true for quite a few of the English VAs).
Camden Rivera
No, she's voiced by Chiara Zanni
Mason Sanders
Just because something isn't to your taste does not mean that it's automatically bad
Gabriel Scott
No guy likes girls with short hair. We just lower our standards because it's nearly impossible to get laid these days. But with 2D girls, you can be as picky as you want
Gabriel Jones
The fuck? There are men who get turned on by women with shaved heads. Standards aren't lower, you just denounce those that aren't yours.
Cooper Nelson
Good thing he got the reigns under control before it all went out of whack.
You're either coping, delusional, and/or female. Pick at least one. (Actually don't bother picking the last one, because actual girls don't watch cartoons.)
Kayden Evans
108074970 (You) are retarded
Angel Flores
That pic somehow looks even worse than "official" adult Molly.
Oh someone is delusional alright. It's not me however. It's the one making /r9k/ tier rants about what a woman should be. Some people like short hair on women, Some people like shaved heads, some people like what (You) don't.
Also fuck off. This board has a reasonable women demographic.
I want to believe you're just shitposting to get (you)s because I don't want to believe there's a person out there that's this unaware of the fact that not everyone is like them
But he wasn't cucked, he threw himself into the power up or whatever you call it to stop the villain
Brandon Nguyen
>girls don't watch cartoons. >says this on Yea Forums >same place where we've had threads on barbie and sophia the first of all fucking things. this HAS to be bait, r-right?
>Being this autistic about a word nobody takes seriously Dude wanted molly cunny, never took the chans (and blew it a couple of times). Alien prince shows up and destroys all hope for him getting togheter with the girl he loves. Anons joke about him being cucked and acends to wizard status as a virgin that blew his last chans for cunt several times. >Christ alive, you dipshits throw cuck around like it's fucking birdseed. translates to >Don't joke about my fetish
Ok he isn't a cuck, but I bet he would watch
Liam Cruz
>never took the chans
Like in U-18 Chan?
Cooper Rivera
"Chance" user, the word is "chance".
Bentley Carter
Newfag, you're the fucking autist here throwing that word around all willy nilly, go fuck yourself with a rake. And what fucking fetish? I'm just fucking tired of you newfags using that word for every fucking goddamn romantic plot under the sun, dipshit.
Adrian Cox
So far, he's been pretty quiet, or barely sperging out in this thread like he does in others. That's a pretty good sign since he might not attach to this like he did with WITCH.
Thomas Nguyen
To be fair, Jordan had way better chemistry with Molly than Aikka in the second half of the series.
Anthony Russell
you get what I'am sayin, some word are the same in differant laungages. Chans is swedish, though it was the same for some reason.
>newfag. Christ alive, you dipshits throw cuck around like it's fucking birdseed. >Newfag, you're the fucking autist here throwing that word around all willy nilly >I'm just fucking tired of you newfags using that word for every fucking goddamn romantic plot under the sun, dipshit. >cuck >newfag
Aren't you doing the same right now?
Hunter Barnes
Seethe harder, newfag. Your wording is wrong, go fuck yourself, and stay wrong.
Lincoln Ross
>Seethe harder >newfag >Your wording is wrong
And I'am the newfag and autist? It was a joke, but you sperging out over "cuck" made it alot more funny
>go fuck yourself, and stay wrong. Whish I could but both acts would be impossible
Still bummed out about that, but it made the story a bit more complex and enjoyable as it invokes more emotions and realism
I gotta say, I do like the worldbuilding in this show even more than W.I.T.C.H.'s too. Though I'm not sure it's objectively better - I'm just more of a fan of alien worlds than medieval ones.
>You know perfectly well Oban is both Yea Forums and Yea Forums, but usually posted here.
>Now kindly stop shitting up my thread.
Oliver Jenkins
No, fuck off to Yea Forums. There is no such thing as both Yea Forums and Yea Forums, and you cant shit up a thread that was already shit from the OP down.
Parker Nguyen
Yea Forums: animation from Japan Yea Forums: animation not from Japan both Yea Forums and Yea Forums: animation from both Japan and anywhere else
Now that I've spelled it out for you, GTFO of my thread you retard.
Brayden Roberts
Newfag, this has discussed on Yea Forums for ages. You'd know that if you weren't such a newfaggot retard, so shut up and fuck off with your retardation already.
Samuel Flores
But this is animation from Japan. You know damn well that it is, you just said it. If its from Japan, its Yea Forums, period. Next you'll tell me all of anime is Yea Forums because it was inspired by Disney.
No, fuck off. I garuntee I've been here longer than you, not like it's even relevant at all. Stop making Yea Forums into Yea Forums2.
It's a co-production between Japan and non-Japan. Hence it belongs on both boards. I literally don't know how else to explain it to you
>Next you'll tell me all of anime is Yea Forums because it was inspired by Disney. Inspired is not the same thing as actually produced. Your strawman argument fails I'm afraid
Hunter Garcia
Sure you have, newfag. Sure you have. Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure.
Thats not how this works and you know it. If its made in Japan its Yea Forums, full fucking stop. So if its partially made in Japan, its still fucking Yea Forums. Unless it was make entirely somewhere else, its not Yea Forums.
I went back and deleted every apostrophe in this post because your a fucking cunt. Enjoy.
>Images and discussion should pertain to media of Western origin. That's the actual Yea Forums rule. Oban is clearly of Western origin, since it's part-French.
Nothing about "if it's on Yea Forums it can't be here". Now fuck off
Adrian Lopez
Goddam your fucking stupid. I spelled it out and it still went over your head.
Ian Ramirez
So by your logic, since the majority of fucking animation is made by fucking gooks in Korea and other non-American locations, those shows aren't fucking Yea Forums too, right? Goddamn, newfag, you are beyond fucking stupid. And wrong.
It isnt of western origin you fucking retard, I just explained that to you. Its made from Japan, its Yea Forums.
I love how this follows you telling me off for a strawman, really activates my almonds.
Jaxon Cook
But it's not made in Japan, it's made in France AND Japan. (In fact the primary country of production is France in this case, Japan is secondary.) So you're still wrong.
Dominic Garcia
Didn't call you a strawman, retard. Good job with the not so good reading skill, ya dipshit.
Bentley Anderson
This bitch literally just fucking said it was made in Japan and it's not made in Japan in the same damn post. How stupid can you be?
Double retard over here.
Tyler Gray
Can we all just agree that the show good and the only reason W.I.T.C.H. fag brought up the anime thing was to not admit that Oban Star Racers wasn't the cartoon with the most soul?!
That wasn't the only reason, actually. I also didn't want to admit it had better worldbuilding (see )
Nicholas Hernandez
Is it Witchfag that's sperging out and trying to say this show doesn't belong here? Seems odd he'd pull that shit a day after making the thread here. I just figured it was one of the usual newfags who thinks the show isn't Yea Forums despite it literally being talked about here almost exclusively.
Liam Brown
I just spent half an hour arguing against that newfaggot you retard. Seriously, why the fuck would I shit up my own thread?
Andrew Morris
>Two severe autists >Very similar dialect I'm pretty sure you're the one that said that adult Molly resembles a feminist caricature
Dylan Gray
It's funny to me that you think it's a legitimate reply when you said it but not when others say it. You get what you give, if all you do is insult then all you get back is an insult, and bitching about it is honestly cringe.
It's a French Japanese collaboration, but honestly the Japs stole a lot from the French. They stole a lot of their techniques. Notice how the characters don't have any noses.
I do appreciate the Spanish animators ten fold. Their stories might be even more vulgar and obnoxious than the Japs and even less emotional than the French, but they have far more badass and edgier mentalities than the Japs without being lame. They also have some impressive animation that would make Walt Disney's animators eat their hearts out. Spanish know the 12 principles of animation.
It also has to be a conflict that Jordan can't solve himself. The series tied itself up pretty well, I don't see how they could make a continuation unless they retcon something.
Owen Collins
>I should draw more regular fan art for this show. God bless
Was the Avatar allowed to stop wars? The Crog-human war was haltet because of the race for a new Avatar, but is the Avatar suppose to hinder conquests/war between species outside of that?
I don't think there is anything stopping the Avatar from doing that. Otherwise there would be no point in stopping Kross from becoming the Avatar.
Jaxon Richardson
First thought was magical girl with a racing girl theme but it does say superhero. Then I thought of pic related which already has the right colours. Anyway it has to include her star tattoo
hey, my gf whats to buy w.i.t.c.h because she enjoyed it as a teenager, but i cant find a definitive version of the full series in english, where should i look?
Cooper Foster
Spirit, because in his episode he actually felt creepily, incomprehensibly alien, unlike most of the other racers that were your usual Ben 10 fare.
Juan Bell
He can still visit Eva on Earth r-right? Satis could teleport throughout the entire galaxy.
I watched it when it first aired. Local station decided to drop it about 3 episodes from the end. Was years before I found it on-line and caught the ending which answered all my questions. . Which planet would win? . What would the Big Wish be? . When did noses become obsolete?
Matthew Stewart
To do what, watch her peg the alien prince? Yeah he can probebly visit onec or twice before she dies of old age.
Just have it be about Molly and a new adventure, simple as that. Sure, her inner conflict was resolved, but not like we can't enjoy another adventure. Long as they don't bring Jordan in to fix everything for Molly, or go "you thought the last villain was bad? This guy's worse!"
Ian Moore
>"you thought the last villain was bad? This guy's worse!" This is would be the worst scenario
James Ward
Depends if the villain is just Canaletto 2.0 or something lame like that. If they did pull a "bigger bad" but managed to make them engaging and/or amusing, it would at least be entertaining in some way even if still a bit disappointing. But I can imagine that it'll be some kind of new race with lesser stakes than the Oban one, but still escalate near the end to maybe threaten galactic peace. Of course, this this still brings up what Jordan's role could be and how he'd have to be indisposed to avoid just snapping his fingers and eliminating the threat. I suppose either he gets distracted by another issue, or maybe has periods of time where his body is inactive because of the cosmic bullshit that now is his existence.
Nathaniel Rodriguez
That's the problem, they can't just throw in another big bad. Jordan is the Avatar and should be able to solve any conflict like that arises. They would have to retcon the original series and ruin the ending.
Xavier Perez
>hey, my gf whats to buy w.i.t.c.h because she enjoyed it as a teenager, but i cant find a definitive version of the full series in english, where should i look? The show only got a full DVD release in Europe, so presuming you're in the US you'd need to import it and have a region-free player (or one that can be set to region free), or just watch it on PC. The discs are also quite expensive.
>His constant putting-down of living creatures would make one think that he would wish for machines to reign supreme, but this could not be further from the truth; he actually envies organic beings. As a robot, he cannot feel the sensations of touch or warmth, which he longs for. Constant study of living creatures has done nothing, so he hopes that the Ultimate Prize will do that which science cannot; make him flesh and blood, or at least let him feel.
Only if they bring out a villain who somehow rivals Canaletto's power and able to handle Jordan's godly power. At most, we'll probably see someone who could destroy planets, and is possibly outside of Jordan's influence because of some technicality in the avatar's ruleset.
Ayden Parker
Gonna have to rewatch Oban this summer. Their hasn't been any kind of recent updates for the spin-off except for the promo image, right? Or is it hanging on the blue-ray sales you think?
I fucking wish it was my show, it would be the most popular cartoon in the world (as it would have been from the start had it not had been the most executive mismanaged cartoon of all time) if Disney hired me.
she wasn't brown and a little bit thicker but other than that it was nice I'm pretty sure some pic of her is flying around, she used to post them a lot on Yea Forums back when the show was new
Christopher Collins
>IT'S ACTUALLY RAW EMOTIONAL PAIN FROM BEGINNING TO END >it's pretty mediocre in almost every area. >it's incredibly obvious this was a pure passion project.
Jordan was pretty much sleeping in the same room with her, no way he wasn't getting to spoon her ass a few nights
Caleb Rivera
Was she originally intended to be older? She could easily pass as a full grown woman here.
Ayden Allen
talent in comparison to what ? as far nowadays' collective cartoon bar, it's pretty up there in terms of art and writing. Mediocre would be something like Star VS, with just bad art and writing across the board. It's not as good as well realized as nu ducktales, but that's a pretty high bar to pass, most cartoons are just not that good.
Jack Richardson
>It's not as good as well realized as nu ducktales
Eh, only real difference are her boobs not looking like mosquito bites as they do in the actual show.
Christopher Green
Contrary to American popular opinion, a 15-year-old girl can easily pass for an young adult woman looks-wise.
Dylan White
yeah I kind of expected this exact post but whatever, it's unarguably true
Hunter Roberts
Instilling an (incredibly strong, according to OP) emotional reaction means it's succeeded with flying colors. Trying to downplay after saying something like that makes it look like you're actively trying not to like something.
Zachary Jenkins
Was she 15 in the show? For some reason I remember her being younger.
Kayden Robinson
Genuinely incredible: emotional impact, worldbuilding/designs Mediocre to bad: plot, characterization, dialogue, voice acting, music Just plain awful: the love triangle (forgot to mention this in the OP)
That's hardly a show that "succeeded with flying colors" user
Nicholas James
Says (You)
Elijah Sullivan
>characterization >mediocre to bad I'm sorry what ?
Joshua Parker
Didn't they actually cuddle before don showup and break them up? She was like "don't go keep me warm".
Well, technically a "magical girl" is a type of super hero, so I think they can be conflated sometimes.
I think so, been a while since I watched, but I know they were getting fairly close by the end and Jordan was leaking spaghetti as he clearly wanted to be more than fuckbuddies.
Ian Lee
He thought Molly was a guy at first, the dude needs to see a fucking optometrist and a therapist.
Honestly don't think he deserved to get his kid back.
