Voice acting could use some work
They were obviously going for the surfer bro since the sun gimmick. I'm more thrown off by Demencia's voice

their voices sound really downplayed, as if it's not loud and bombastic enough

alan's blackhat has gotten better but the acting is bad and sunblast is just ugh. it's like there awkwardly trying to get into character and just aren't giving it enough.

I think the issue was actor direction. It's key for any voice actor to be given proper instruction on how to emote to ensure their delivery matches what was animated. For example, both Sun Blast and Demencia desperately needed more energy in certain portions
Sounds like it. Granted Markiplier has a distinct voice, but it's kind of wasted given the character he's doing. However there is a small possibility they could use him in other minor characters as seen in the shorts. Actually come to think of it, he probably could have made for a better Sun Blast

Spanish is definetly a lot better, just compare the spanish version of Sunblast's introduction to Flug and the rest with the english. A lot more personality, less droned out and more power and echo to it.

Honestly, I appreciate Sunblast in Spanish a lot more after seeing the English dub.
He may a very plain jerk jock type character, but the actor portraying him puts a lot of effort into it.
Probably because he had an actual voice direction.

I'm surprised they just didn't get the Robin voice actor. Seems like a pretty standard joke casting.
I think people were expecting some progress/improvement for their first full episode. But hey, it's a pilot, so I suppose they can improve from here.

I think there are small jokes and puns that were lost like when sunglass says they are small and weak, Dr club says no you and shrinks him. Don't remember the jokes well but there were a lot left out.

I don't think I like this show Demencia is VERY annoying. I always hated her in the shorts, but I don't think I can take full episodes of her annoying personality.

So Demencia is a cannibal so she eats humans for breakfast and even ate the shrunken super hero. That makes her particularly shitty she also doesn't listen to Flubb and just like in the shorts she's obsessed repeatedly with MUH BLACK HAT which is very grating. I don't think this show is a good idea. If anything it's very bad. I think only Flub is the only sympathetic character in the whole thing. Demencia is annoying and Black Hat himself is a Gary Stu going by the shorts given he never really loses (and Black Hat punishes Flub whenever her accomplishes his missions making him very unlikable).

Is this crap really getting full seasons in English? It doesn't deserve it.

I dunno her english voice from the one orientation vid focused on her sounded somewhat better. Here it didn't really have any emotion except at certain instances and sounded too "dull cutsey" or something.

This routine got old in the shorts I don't think I can tolerate it for a full series. In fact the character dynamics got old within the shorts.

- Black Hat is a bastard to every single living being.

Even Dan Vs varied things every once in a while. This show fails to do that and I'm not impressed with the pilot. It's much too repetitive and blatantly mean spirited with no real wit like Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy so yeah this show is crap.

3. Demencia gets punished just like Flug, so I'm not getting what you mean there.

So watched the sub, watched the dub, and... The director for the english dub is a hack.

When you translate from one language to another you should take certain liberties with word usage. Not everything translates 100% well. That scene where they enter the city in the blackhat ship is almost word for word translation from spanish. It sounds good in spanish, but in english it's fucking awkward as fuck.

I do hope asshole heroes and nice villains isn't going to be a running thing in this show. That'll get tiring.

If you need to constantly look at the bottom of the screen to read subtitles, you're going to miss out on visual jokes as a result. And don't act like you're some special shit who can fully read subtitles with your peripheral vision and still see the screen properly.

Normally, I'm a pleb with zero taste, and zero ability to notice bad voice acting. I almost ALWAYS prefer the English dubs to any anime or cartoon.
However, I found the english acting in this to be pretty jarring. Penumbra and Flug in particular. Dementia did an ok job, but I noticed a decrease in quality in Blackhat's acting from the english shorts. It's like everyone was really stilted or just particularly over-enunciating and speaking a bit too slowly.
I noticed it with black hat the most. Maybe it was because the lines he had were all meant to be really slow and methodical but in the shorts he had no trouble emoting at a fairly decent pace. Is it just me, or were the english shorts better overall in the acting department?

to be fair it makes way more sense in the spanish dub since Flugg's VA also voices James.

i''m almost sure Alan confirmed the script's been written with English in mind first (i could be worng 'bout this tho), including the jokes. In fact, most of jokes in the Mexican Spanish version are ad lib (Macias and Meli G's modus operandi)

The shorts seemed fine in English. Not great, but more than adequate. So why did this come out so ass? The voice direction seems so anemic, even Demencia lacked energy.

I ended up re-watching the english version of the original shorts and they're much better than what we got in The Dreadful Dawn. I wonder why the voices ended up being subpar in pilot? Atleast Alan improved, I think.

I wouldn't mind the surfer dude voice direction they gave for Sun if the voice actor was good. A lot of this dub feels like a fan dub.

I like this Black Hat a lot more too honestly. His goals feel more clearly along the lines of "greedy asshole with a taste for evil and unspecified eldritch powers", with his main goal in the shorts to sell some random ass product to unsuspecting villains. In the episode he's just more of a personification of evil, which I guess makes for cooler animation but it forces him into the background too much and makes his overall goals a lot vaguer. I love Flug but honestly he needs Black Hat to play off against and this approach robs him of that.

The people comparing this to bad anime dubbing are spot on. I know this was animated with the English script in mind, but at the same time it feels like they didn't use these actors for the timing. Did they have a temp cast do the voices just so they'd have something to animate? The final voices feel like the actors are trying to match pre-animated lip movements. The only one spared is Flug since he has no mouth to synch.

On top of that, the English script is just weak in general. I know most of them are bilingual but I don't think writing in English is their strong suit. The dialogue flows so much better in Spanish.

That's what I would suspect but it's not found on there, maybe its from the old podemos site that got taken down but I wouldn't know.

I think they may have animated the character movements with Spanish in mind and then just did the lip movements for English because other than the mouths, the animation matches the Spanish version much better.

The worst part is that only like 1-2 jokes required any footnotes in the fansub (off the top of my head, the La Llorona joke and the Team Rocket reference, but that was more of an in-joke than anything). A lot of jokes were perfectly translatable, but for whatever reason just didn't get used or were worded in such an awkward way that the humor was lost.

Honestly wouldn't be surprised if it was never brought to the US. The show doesn't fit the North American network's current direction. The past crop of shows they have greenlit demonstrate a business decision to orient themselves towards a younger demographic than in their past. I don't think Villainous is a too gory or violent or anything I just don't think it fits the brand image Cartoon Network NA is trying to cultivate. Its not really aiming to appeal to 10 year olds anymore but 5-7 year olds. They might enjoy it but their parents might not want them watching something like this.

if they can pull it off i imagine they will at some point, but frankly considering how expensive it would be to bring in the eng voice cast for some of the cn titles they'll want to do it's unlikely, beyond ok ko because it's something both the show runners want to do, the review of cartoon villains aka the orientations has a lot of crossover stuff in it partially due to the fact that it's probably much easier and less expensive from where there studio is to get into contact with the cn la dub va's, the main series seems more focused on the main cast fulfilling work orders for clients as of now.
