This is Andy Khouri's favorite game. Eric Esquivel was hired by Khouri, despite being a rapist who rapes underage girls, because Esquivel had the right politics. Bleedingcool and many other publications that championed Esquivel and Border Town were also aware of the rape allegations against Esquivel before he was brought on to work for DC by Khouri. It's a bizarre little network and all of these people seem to know each other and be friends.

Well they did totally remove everything that made her endearing to audiences. People loved that she was a regular suburban fanfiction writing nerd in highschool that got to play superhero and fangirl over each actual hero she ran into. She was perfect as the individual teen point of view character living in the Marvel Universe.
Then other writers took over and made her into the same damn generic action girl that every other hero is written as and now nobody cares. and then the team book writers wanted to make her out to be the stoic perfect leader character like some kind of female teen Captain America or something with is a complete turn from the original characterization. IIRC Wilson was still writing the book up until a while ago. I think the problems were like this:
-They put in an unnecessary relaunching of the title (which showed that relaunching books too many times have a negative effect that harms even books that just relaunched for the first time)
-They placed Kamala on the Avengers too soon
-Too many other writers were inconsistent with Kamala's character
-Civil War II derailed things

No one ever wants to just make a damn superhero book out of Carol. It's always tons of preaching and fighting back against misogyny and showing off how cool she is over and over again.
Just make a normal story where she fights bad guys and saves people, build up a side cast and some villains or something. Her latest series launching straight into a story of leading captured women against random forgotten 70s era Captain Misogyny and his army of evil barbarian men is just too annoying and preachy to bother with. Presumably through schools and libraries, which really complicates outside analysis. We don't know how many were bought in bulk to be put into libraries and classrooms, we don't know what kind of discounts were offered, we don't know how much kickback was given to the schools (yes, public schools get a cut for pushing this stuff), and ultimately we don't know actual readership.
This isn't unusual. The direct market is exceptional because of how it is structured. We can assume by and large that sales closely reflect actual readership (bookscan too, since it measures point of purchase data.) But not stuff like this. Which is why publishers only boast of books printed/books shipped through these things.

I actually go to many public libraries, to work and study, and do not see many Kamala TPBs. I live in Los Angeles and Burbank and the libraries here are not exactly tiny.

Comics have always been woke. The problem is the pool of creators is dwindling with old people dying and most people choosing to go creator owned. They're giving a lot of people chances and that means there's going to be a lot of trash. But there's been some good shit too. Surprisingly Eve Ewing has been doing pretty well with Riri, not that most people give a shit.
The internet has made it even easier to obsess and focus on the bad shit since the internet isn't going to forget that comics like America were a thing even though it died quickly.
