Also you're all forgetting that Snipes isn't exactly gangsta himself IRL. His early career consisted of acting briefly as a pimp, an actor for the Bad music video, and several comedies. He went to jail for failure to file tax returns properly. Boyega has an entire career to show he can do these roles, and as far as I can tell he's more likely to escape the Star Wars crunch than Ridley.

Like his initiating moment is the death of his cotrooper either realizing the evils of the Empire and the value of life OR his own mortality and a want to get the fuck out of dodge. He's seemingly closer to the second but it's ruined by him almost immediately attaching himself to Rey for no reason while indiscriminately blowing away people he could know(I mean a guy even fucking recognizes him). If he had a slower burn of being able to realize people could have a deeper caring for you other than a tool and being able to return that appreciation it'd be more interesting. Or a Finn who actually has compassion for the people of the Empire because he knows they're actually people like him that he was raised with and are only in that situation through decisions made for them, that could lead to a Finn that's effectively a pacificist who knows the Rebellion is right but he wants an option that doesn't have to slaughter the empire and every combat situation is him struggling to get through a scene in which he desperately wants no one to die. Imagine the movie ending with Starkiller base exploding and him knowing he had a direct influence on that happening while everyone around him cheers.
As is he feels like he was built to service the plot as a more generic rebellion hero then they gave him a backstory after the fact. I know it sounds like I'm going overboard and this would need to be a movie solely focused on Finn for it to work but a light touch could've made him work as a better character.
