I've heard that a minute of full animation takes 90 hours of work. Including backgrounds and such I guess it would be fair to add an additional 30 hours of work as well. The short is just under 8 minutes long, so about 1000 hours of work rounding up, or six months if John was working on it full time.
So is it really unfair to expect anything less than 90's era quality after all these years?

If some nigga robbed you 10 years ago but you never went to the police because it was something small and you didn't have enough money to bother or press charges and then someone asked you if they were a good person, are you not allowed to bring up the theft?
Especially in the case of grooming, crimes are not always easy to report, especially if the person in question is influential enough.
